August 16, 2011 By Stacy Pulliam (US) - See all my reviews This review is from: Four Sail (Audio CD) Everybody seems to think of the album 'Forever Changes' when Love is mentioned. That album has become popular over the years due to curiosity, film soundtracks, etc. But most people dont seem to be very familiar with Love's other work. And even though 'Four Sail' featured a different line-up (with Arthur Lee) the album - in my opinion holds out just as much and just as strongly as 'Forever Changes'. Actually I listen to 'Four Sail' much more often then 'Forever Changes'. The band's line up here were very gifted, funky and heavy musicians. But you also have the beautiful voice and lyrics of Mr. Lee. You get the heavy as well as the soft and emotional. 'Four Sail' is heavier than one would expect and is so much more than your typical late 60s psychedelia. The bands first 2 albums are more pop-like in terms of the so-called "flower power" sounds. Then of course later things changed. For the better. Im not knocking their first works. Not at all. Everything you can find from Love is amazing. ( I own all the albums) But for me- Ill take 'Four Sail' over the others if I had to choose only one. It never gets old. Im never tired of listening to this band ever- and especially this album. This could have been a major hit. possibly. But youd have to know the band's history to understand why their albums didnt sell as well as most great bands from that time. I strongly suggest any album from Love but this one in particular. It will indeed blow your mind. Arthur Lee was one of our great Amerikan minds. He can make you cry, smile, dance, and love all at the same time. He can make you free. God bless him. ************************************ more info: http://www.allmusic.com/album/release/four-sail-bonus-tracks- mr0001918946. Track Listings 1. August 2. Your Friend And Mine 3. Just a few days ago we featured a swell duvet cover featuring the cover art of Forever Changes as the prevailing design. Love was perfectly primed to become an object of cult adoration. They were an interracial band that was smack in the middle of a very fertile California music scene in the 1960s. The quality of their output was very high, and reflected a very important transition in the maturation of the rock scene as a whole. Love’s “classic” line-up didn’t last long. They were a hard-luck band with more than its share of uncommonly punitive arrests and premature deaths. On top of all that, Love did produce the one clear masterpiece, the aforementioned Forever Changes that is today widely regarded to be one of the greatest albums ever recorded. The documentary Love Story was released just after frontman Arthur Lee’s death from leukemia in 2006. While it is properly adulatory, directors Chris Hall and Mike Kerry largely manage to keep the distorting effect of sadness and grief out of it, presumably because much of the footage was filmed before the deaths of Lee as well as the (unrelated) 1998 deaths of Ken Forssi and Bryan Maclean. The documentary addresses a curious moment in 2002 when the British Parliament issued a decree declaring Love to be “the world’s greatest rock band.” There’s funny footage of MP Peter Bradley reading it aloud followed by fellow MP Stephen Pound crying out “Arthur Lee!” and worshipfully dropping to his knees. The final spoken words of the movie come out of Lee’s mouth, lamenting that Love is still not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. More than ten years after his death, they still aren’t. Arthur Lee and Love’s Essential Bootlegs. Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, Denmark March 12, 1970 The greatest, unbootlegged live band of the mid-Sixties is the original lineup of the Los Angeles group Love — the bi-racial folk-rock pirates who made Love and Da Capo in 1966, then the silken psychedelia of Forever Changes in 1967. If there are any soundboard or audience recordings of Love in their Sunset Strip prime, they have not surfaced. Singer-leader Arthur Lee’s aversion to the grind and indignities of the road ensured that no one rolled tape anywhere else. Lee’s next version of the group, a hard-rock U-turn from Forever Change ” bruised romanticism, toured hard (by his standards), reaching Britain and Europe in early 1970. Love were especially feted in Denmark: Danish TV interviewed Lee and taped five songs at the Tivoli show, including the convulsive thunder of “August,” from 1969’s Four Sail , and Lee’s brutal update of the heroin-blues crawl “Signed D.C.,” originally on Love . It is a short but rare solid-audio shot of Lee in the kind of dramatic vocal command that made him an instant, fearsome star on the Strip just five years earlier. A fuller, official view of that Love era was finally released in 2007: A disc of recordings from the British leg, with Cream-like bluster and dramatic rearrangements of songs like Da Capo ‘s “Orange Skies,” comes with the three-CD set, The Blue Thumb Recordings (Hip-O Select). Black Beauty Unreleased studio album, 1973 The band that made this album, for the small Buffalo label, was Arthur Lee’s first all-black Love. It was also the first Love album produced by Paul Rothchild, best known for the Elektra albums he made with Love’s chief rivals at the label, the Doors. Black Beauty might have been received as a strong comeback for Lee, a turn to steamy R&B with heavy-guitar punch — if it had come out. The label went bankrupt before release. Born in Memphis, Lee was — under that black-Mick Jagger armor — a soul man who sang like a tougher Jackie Wilson, with a sharp crying edge that cut through the early Love’s tense folk-rock jangle with emotionally vengeful poise. That voice is here too, with more Dixie in its inflection. Lee’s writing and the power-funk arrangements lack the provocation and complexity of Forever Changes , but “I’m Good & Evil” is frank cocky rock, “Midnight Sun” sounds like something Lee could have written for his friend Jimi Hendrix and “Stay Away” would make a hip cover for Living Colour. Black Beauty has circulated in various forms and fidelity for many years. The good news: According to the official Arthur Lee website, an official release is, at last, in the works. Robert Plant, “We’re Doing It for Love: A Benefit for Arthur Lee,” Beacon Theater, New York City June 23, 2006 After his release from a California prison in 2001, Lee quickly went back on the road, going deep into Love’s Sixties catalog, mostly with the perfectly suited Los Angeles band Baby Lemonade. Bootlegs abound from Lee’s final working years, along with an official release of his complete performance of Forever Changes , with an orchestra, at London’s Royal Festival Hall in 2003 — The Forever Changes Concert (Snapper). But in the spring of 2006, Lee announced that he was being treated for leukemia. Nils Lofgren, Yo La Tengo and Mott The Hoople’s Ian Hunter were among the artists who performed at this New York benefit to raise funds for Lee’s care. Ex-Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant, an avowed fan of Love and Lee, was the star in name and commitment, performing a full set with a good New York band and, in the Forever Changes songs “A House Is Not a Motel” and “Bummer in the Summer,” original Love guitarist (and Lee’s boyhood friend) Johnny Echols. Plant celebrated Lee’s influence as well as his songbook, drawing connections to Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and Zeppelin’s “What Is and What Shall Never Be.” Plant also slipped a shot of ’s “Cowgirl in the Sand” into Da Capo ‘s “7+7 Is.” Plant’s performance was an unforgettable show of Love ¬ — and love . I was there. I keep going back, thanks to a DVD shot from the Beacon balcony — with steady hands, decent focus and better-than-expected sound — and sent to me by an acquaintance in Denmark. Something from the soundboard, formally released, would honor both Plant and Lee. Lee, hospitalized in Memphis, could not attend the show. He died a few weeks later, on August 3rd. He was 61. New DVD documentary on Arthur Lee: "Love Story" When I think of the peak concert attending experiences of my life, two of the top ten shows were Arthur Lee and Love. In the early 90s, I saw a pre-jail Arthur do a nearly all-acoustic set at a small bar in North Hollywood because the electricity went out. He made up for the loss of the band with inspired skat singing and the audience left the show grinning from ear to ear. The second time I saw Lee play was even more memorable. After spending 5-1/2 years in prison, Lee was released and began a tentative series of gigs around Los Angeles playing Love's classic 1967 album "Forever Changes" in its entirety. When he walked onstage that night, at a packed Henry Fonda Theater, he looked tiny, frail, old, scared even. His clothes looked too big. Everyone was pulling for him, we all wanted this to be amazing and triumphant, but it didn't look promising. Within seconds, however, he strapped on his hollow body electric guitar and became the great Arthur Lee. It was a magical musical event. Lee's voice had lost none of its beauty and range; the songs none of their power. Audience members were moved to tears. Yes, it was that good (and thanks to the Internets, here's a clip from that very night's highlight, "You Set the Scene"). Now, two years after his untimely death, there is a new feature-length documentary, Love Story that tells the tragic trajectory of the life and times of Arthur Lee. It's a great film and thank the gods that someone got Lee on video talking about his life's work before he died. The dramatic power of Lee's story hasn't been diminished from constant retelling on Vh1 rock docs and "Love Story" is gripping from start to finish. Mostly it focuses on the band's first three records, especially "Forever Changes." And of course it also covers Lee's notoriously difficult personality and the drug use that split the band wide-open. The only criticism I have of "Love Story" is that there isn't more footage of Lee and and the band in their prime, but it's not like the filmmakers had much of an option as there is virtually no footage of Love that exists from that era save for this wonderful clip of them on Dick Clark's American Bandstand performing a blistering version of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book."
