Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary www.cathedralprep.org facebook.com/alumnicathedralprep Office of Development and Alumni Affairs www.cathedralprepalumni.com @CathedralPrep1 56-25 92nd Street [email protected] “Cathedral Prep Alumni Association” Elmhurst, NY 11373 [email protected] CATHEDRALPREP1914 718-592-6800, ext. 137 HISTORY AND MISSION OF CATHEDRAL PREP

athedral Prep began its illustrious history in the Fall of 1914 at the corners of Atlantic and Washington Avenues in , NY. In C1963 an additional campus was opened in Elmhurst, NY. The “two became one” at the Elmhurst site in 1985.

ounded as a preparatory high school, Cathedral was also a seminary – a place where a boy could be comfortable discerning Fa vocation to the diocesan priesthood at a young age. For over 100 years Cathedral has stayed faithful to its mission: to form the mind in the ways of academic excellence and the heart and soul in the ways of heroic virtue and belief.

roud to call over 4,775 men graduates, the program at Cathedral continues to offer young men living in Kings and Queens PCounties, as well as from the outlying areas, a personalized, superior education in an environment where growth in maturity and grace are encouraged and fostered. Keenly aware that both the Church and society need strong, dedicated leaders, Cathedral is determined to stay faithful to forming men as gifted thinkers and generous servants. Whether our graduates don the vestments of pastoral service as priests or deacons, or devote themselves to caring for an individual family, a young man who experiences the Cathedral spirit will be ready and willing to be a man for greatness.

1 ADMINISTRATION elcome to Cathedral Prep! & SCHOOL SERVICES W Dear Brother Alumni, Generous Benefactors, Very Reverend Joseph G. Fonti, ’84, S.T.L. and Supportive Friends: Rector-President

Mr. Richie Diaz, ’96, M.A., M.S. Ed. Pledging that he and the diocese would make a “full court press” Principal effort to raise the awareness of the need for more priestly vocations, Bishop DiMarzio decreed that 2017- 2018 will be known as the “Year Mr. Joseph Russo, ’79, B.A. Assistant Principal of Student Life of Vocations.”

Mr. Louis D’Amico, ’82, M.B.A. Established over 100 years ago as one of the main proponents for Business Manager vocational discernment in the diocese, Cathedral continues to attract young men who yearn for wisdom and a deeper understanding of our Catholic faith. These eager and enthusiastic souls represent well the diversity and complexity of our SPIRITUAL FORMATORS / THEOLOGY TEACHERS diocese. Be they sons and grandsons of immigrants or immigrants themselves, our Cathedral men are a mosaic of the talent, intellect, and generosity of those who makeup the Diocese Father Christopher Bethge, '07, M.A. of Brooklyn, Archdiocese of New York, and the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Father Jun Hee Lee, S.T.L. Challenged in the classroom and at daily Mass to put their gifts at the service of others, our students are encouraged during their four year stay to discover the unique plan God SCHOOL SERVICES has for them in this life. I am happy to share with you that among our number are future priests - young men of quality, fervency, and devotion who have openly shared their Mrs. Erin Zapf, M.S. hope and desire to be, please God, ordained one day, priests of Jesus Christ. Vianney Program Coordinator

Mr. Larry Medina, B.A. The 2017 Annual Report highlights the life of Cathedral both as an exceptional boys high Athletic Director school and minor seminary. It also acknowledges the generosity of faithful alumni and Fraternity Program Coordinator friends whose efforts and sacrifices help to secure Cathedral’s mission: to form, for our Church and our local communities, Men for Greatness. Mr. Christopher Otis, M.S. ED. Ms. Angela Sammarco, M.A. Media Center Coordinators Grateful to all who in this past year have invested their time and treasure, we remain steadfast and hopeful asking “the harvest master to send more laborers for his harvest.” Mr. Timothy McCleary, B.S. Director of Development & Alumni Affairs

Mr. Ryan Quinn, '13, B.A. Father Fonti Assistant Director for Admissions & Advancement Rector-President

2 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Words from the Principal Most Reverend , '65 Dear Fellow Alumni, Benefactors, and Friends of our Cathedral Prep: Bishop Liaison Very Rev. Joseph Fonti, '84 First and most importantly, I sincerely thank you for your support of our efforts here at our Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary. As Richie Diaz, '96 always, I am humbled and honored to address you as your Principal, and Reverend Msgr. Steven Aguggia I know that you will be proud of all of our accomplishments and all that is to come in the future as you page through our 2017 Annual Report. Theresa Andersen Giuseppe Campailla Allow me to provide context for my words to you from a rather unusual place, a place that has never given me much inspiration – a gas station. Matthew Dybus, '11 As I was driving home from Cathedral one afternoon, I was stopped at Paul Friel, '85 a traffic light and glanced over to my left to see a sign in a gas station. The station sign simply read, “Because your best miles are still ahead of you.” Later, I couldn’t help but reflect on the statement Stephen Macri as I thought about the school we all love and support so fervently, our Cathedral Prep. As you read Jerry Magaldi, '74 through this Annual Report, might I suggest that you do so with these words at the front of your mind, as they are in mine this year – “Cathedral’s best miles are certainly still ahead of her.” John O’Brien, '01 Rocco Papandrea While Fr. Fonti, the Board of Trustees, the faculty, and I are extremely proud of all that we have accomplished and all that is currently flourishing here at Cathedral Prep – the tremendous growth of Brian Rooney our academic programs and of our individual students, our unparalleled and ever-growing student John Ryan, St. Pius X '75 support programs, our outstanding faculty, our continued expansion of our technology program, our new course offerings this year, our renewed commitment to engaging students in leadership roles, and Reverend Robert Whelan, '74 our look toward strategic planning for the future, just to name a few – we confidently also look forward to the many miles ahead for Cathedral Prep.

Alumni Association And, as we continue to drive forward, we do so firmly focused on our mission as a seminary high school program where young men are called to discern their vocations from our Lord. It is your continued Executive Board support and love for Cathedral Prep that make the journey into our next 100+ years so bright and full of promise, and for that we are ever thankful. Please always feel welcome to visit, call, or email to hear Vincent LaPuma, '01 of how our bright “miles ahead” are looking, and be assured that Cathedral Prep remains a program Kenneth Engesser, '74 focused on forming Catholic men for greatness who know their pasts, but who are also brave enough to confidently look forward to their futures with our Lord as their Leader. Frank Dwyer, '79 Rev. Joseph Fonti, '84 All the best, Arthur Vollmerhausen, '88 Sal Candela, '02 Mr. Richie Diaz Principal Ryan Quinn, '13 Tim McCleary

I chose to attend Cathedral because I attended a basketball camp at the school, which I greatly enjoyed. Cathedral’s basketball coach asked me if I would be interested in becoming a Cathedral student. Over time it has proved to be a great decision. The environment of brotherhood is truly in the air. What I love the most is how the teachers never let you fall behind; they really pick you up and guide you to become a man for greatness. TESTIMONIAL

14 WHY I GIVE TO CATHEDRAL PREP

Cipolla Family Scholarship Supporting Cathedral Prep financially allows my wife Lourdes and I to know that our resources are being used for extremely worthy causes. I use the plural “causes” because when we give to Cathedral we give not just to support Catholic education or school choice for families in need, important causes in their own right. Rather, we are also supporting potential vocations and an institution designed for that very purpose. Add in the fact that we are helping to keep alive the legacy of a truly great priest and friend, Bishop Catanello, and the decision was easy.

Cathedral is such a special place because it provides young men with a unique opportunity to thoroughly and sincerely consider a religious vocation without commitment or pressure. Simultaneously, the students are challenged academically and prepared for college in a nurturing faith-filled environment. These days, there is no shortage of charitable causes that need support, but over the years, as we have become more familiar with the students, staff, and faculty at Cathedral, we have become even more reassured of our decision. You do not have to be an alum to recognize that Cathedral’s mission is not just special; it is especially vital.

Cathedral is many things. It is a school of diversity, brotherhood, peacefulness, and greatness. We all strive to be great and that is something Cathedral challenges us to do, because with every challenge comes success. I came to Cathedral because I heard God’s call to bring his people closer to him and serve his people as a priest. Cathedral is truly a house of formation and preparation for the real world. Robert Podzius attended Cathedral from 1967 - 1970. After attending Douglaston for a year, Bob graduated from Pace University - Lubin School of Business with a BBA, Finance / Accounting. He began his Finance career in New York at CBS Publishing, then Philips Consumer Products, and eventually moved to California in 1985 to become Director of Finance at Plessey Semiconductors, and held several senior level management positions in Silicon Valley technology companies. He joined Apple in 2000 and was appointed Director of Finance for the Americas, with Financial responsibility for Apple’s Supply Chain, Logistics and Distribution for the entire Americas, spending extensive time in China. He retired from Apple at the end of 2011, after contributing significantly to Apple’s meteoric rise to the top of the business world. During his almost 30 years in California, Bob was extremely active in his local Church communities, leading Parish Councils, Finance Councils, Eucharistic Ministry, teaching High School Religious Education, heading up fundraising activities for Church construction, and coaching basketball. Upon retiring from Apple and moving to Northern Virginia, Bob has been extensively volunteering within the small business and Veterans community in the DC area, assisting Veterans in achieving their entrepreneurial goals after military life. Recently, Bob stepped in and filled a need at Cathedral by supplying iPads to all the classrooms to help Cathedral furnish its students with the best education possible. He also established the Podzius Family Scholarship, in memory of his late brother John, Class of ’66. Bob has stated on several occasions that he believes in Cathedral’s mission to produce “Men of Greatness” and believes the school graduates men who contribute to their local community in so many ways. Bob embodies his philosophy that in life, one should “give of his time, talents, and treasury.” His generous support and personal investment in the lives of Cathedral students have provided resources to further enhance the education of today and tomorrow’s Crusaders. Bob lives in Northern Virginia with Betty, his wife of almost 43 years. He has 3 children, all successful attorneys, two living in Virginia and one in Manhattan.

Bannan played in 14 games during the 1948-1949 season – his first in the college ranks. He continued to excel on the court, averaging 10.5 pts. per game. Diocese that help those discerning to cultivate their seeds of faith. He spoke about the Office of Vocations, Cathedral Prep, Some of these events that took place were the Mass at Citi Field, as pictured below, and Cathedral House of Formation, St. Joseph’s Seminary and the John Paul II House of Discernment, which are dedicated to Vespers for Vocations, the article at right. We ask that you please pray for our men of greatness nurturing seminarians in their faith formation, but he also reiterated the need to simply ask. as they continue to discern their individual vocations in our unique program. “We know in our research right here in our own diocese that the thing that was lacking when we approached young people and asked them why they’re not considering a vocation to the priesthood or religious life, what was lacking was that no one ever asked them to consider a vocation. No one invited them into the vineyard. No one ever heard the voice of Jesus that comes to us telling us that the harvest is great but the laborers are few.” The faithful recited Psalms in front of the Blessed Sacrament, alternating verses with cantor Father Carlos Velasquez and the choir, composed of other priests and seminarians. Psalms of “God’s Marvelous Works” and “The Messiah, King and Priest” filled the church as a prayerful mood radiated throughout the evening. After the intercessory prayers, the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament capped the service in solemn reverence and divine praises, lifting the intentions of those gathered – young and old – some from the parish communities of St. Gerard Majella, Hollis, and St. Pancras, Glendale. Karl Werkmann attended the Holy Hour with a group of parishioners from Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal parish, Ridgewood. “We want to support the idea to get more young people to be priests and to be religious people,” said Werkmann. “Our church is losing too many faithful people and we have to inspire the young people to believe in Christianity and Jesus Christ and God and the Holy Spirit.” Attending the prayer service with Cathedral Prep and Seminary students Father Joseph Fonti, rector of the school, invited students because he believed they would be inspired when they saw the support coming from the community. “I think strength in numbers,” said Father Fonti. “If other young people see their peers coming together to pray, to adore, to support, I think they feel the strength to go forward. At least to open their minds, their hearts, their lips to say ‘Lord, here I am, send me’ or at least say ‘I’ll give it a try.’ “So I think when we do come out as a Church to celebrate our faith in ritual, or in procession or in adoration, it is a testimony to each of us that we’re not alone. There’s strength in numbers, that God has chosen us from all different walks of life and experiences of day-to-day life, and I think it gives us a good affirmation. It gives us a good foundation then to stand on to say ‘I want to be part of this’ or at least to say ‘I think I can be a part of it.’” Accepting the invitation from Father Fonti, senior Jose Angel Solorzano, who attended the Vespers with his mother because he felt God was inviting him to discern the priesthood – a message he said was softly whispered to him in silence, at the beginning of this school year. “I’m possibly thinking right now between the priesthood and law,” said Solorzano. “So I’m not sure which one to take first.” Father Fonti, as he reflected on his own vocation story, said, “It humbles me, in this place I was ordained 25 years ago and it was at Cathedral Prep first in my home parish of Immaculate Heart of Mary, but then at my own experience at Cathedral Prep that I really started peeling away the layers of my life and starting to see that there is something underneath it that is beautiful for God. “Maybe I didn’t always see it. Other people pointed it out, but I think Cathedral was the first place that I was encouraged to not fear God, but to face God and to do it in a way that made me fall in love with Him,” he said.

30 Cathedral Prep Principal Richie Diaz was proud of his Silver Jubilarian friend. “Father Fonti has always talked about being one Celebrates With a house and one family,” Diaz said. “So today the Cathedral Prep family, but more importantly, Father Day at the Ballpark Fonti’s family, is here as one for him. 41 Cathedral Prep Is Home to New Bishop Ford Center From "The Tablet" January 3, 2018 By Matthew O'Connor Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio celebrated Mass and blessed the new Bishop Francis X. Ford, M.M. Center during his pre-Christmas visit to Cathedral Prep and Seminary, Elmhurst.

Following the liturgy, the entire student body, faculty and many alumni gathered for breakfast with the bishop.

The Bishop Ford Center, on the lower level, provides a stage for speeches, presentations and announcements.

“Cathedral Prep is one of our best schools because we have so many young men here considering the priesthood,” said Bishop DiMarzio. “Over a hundred years we have been giving young men a chance to discern a vocation, which ever it might be in life.

“Today we are dedicating a portrait and a room to Bishop Ford. We have proposed him for canonization and it is a long road. He actually went to the former Cathedral Prep in Manhattan. We have him pictured here and the young men can see him and know that someone went through what they’re going through and is now being considered for sainthood and that provided such great inspiration.”

“Through dedicating the Bishop Ford center we will learn of his life,” said Father Joseph Fonti, president of Cathedral. “A boy from Brooklyn, a boy from Cathedral, and a boy who discerned doing something great for God, Bishop Ford’s life and strength will help us all in so many ways.”

Father Fonti said the day was “an opportunity to celebrate with family and friends. The head of our family, Bishop DiMarzio, is here to celebrate with his family and as the father of this house we are so happy he is here.”

He added that alumni and students consider Cathedral to be home and often return for visits.

Principal Richie Diaz said he was excited for the benefits that the Bishop Ford Center will provide for his students.

“The dedication of the Bishop Ford room is a tremendous example of what it means to be a Catholic young man in the diocese and, for our young men, it is a concrete example of what they can do in life and to dream big as they dedicate themselves to the Lord.

“We will use this space to learn more about him and dedicate ourselves to God through his inspiration.”
