Fonti, `84 Rector-President Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary Father Robert Whelan Father Robert Whelan attended Cathedral from 1970-1974. After graduation, Bob received a B.A. in English Literature from Cathedral College (Douglaston) and M.Div. from Immaculate Conception Seminary (Huntington) in 1983. On May 21, 1983, Father Whelan was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Brooklyn. After serving his pastoral year at St. Gerard Majella in Hollis, Father Whelan served as parochial vicar at St. Sylvester (Brooklyn) and St. Teresa Avila (Queens). Following these parochial assignments, Father Whelan assumed the duties of the Director of the Office for Vocations. After a five year service of helping men discern the possibility of priesthood, Father Whelan was appointed pastor of St. Augustine Church (Brooklyn). He currently serves as the pastor of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Bayside. From his time as the Director of the Vocation Office till present day as a Board of Trustee member to both St. Joseph’s Seminary (Dunwoodie) and Cathedral Prep School and Seminary, Father Whelan has been an ardent and influential proponent for vocations. Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary Daniel Friel Daniel Friel attended Cathedral from 1969-1973. Daniel Friel quite literally understands the meaning of the Cathedral brotherhood coming from an Irish-Catholic family, he was second of six Friel brothers to attend Cathedral following his older brother Bernard, ‘72, then followed by Connell, `77, Peter, `78, Kevin, `81, and Paul, `85. Daniel was known for his love and participation in the Cathedral program, he was active in 10 teams and organizations during his Cathedral tenure, most notably Varsity Basketball. In 1977, Daniel graduated from Cathedral College with a B.A. in Psychology. Post graduation, Friel worked for 22 years at the Securities Industry Automation Corporation and was named a Vice President for the last five. Then, for the last 17 years, up till March of 2016, Dan worked for the International Securities Exchange. Once again, he worked his way up through the company ultimately being promoted to the title of Chief Information Officer of ISE. Daniel will be joining his late- classmate, Frank Palombo, as an Immaculata Award recipient. Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary Our Mission Founded as a preparatory high school, in 1914, Cathedral is also a seminary; a place where boys could be comfortable discerning a vocation to the diocesan priesthood at a young age. For over 100 years Cathedral has stayed faithful to its mission: to form the mind in the ways of academic excellence and the heart and soul in the ways of heroic virtue and belief. Our School Proud to call over 4700 men graduates, the program at Cathedral continues to offer the young men of Kings and Queens counties as well as from the outlying areas, a personalized, superior education in an environment where growth in maturity and grace are encouraged and fostered. Keenly aware that both the Church and society need strong, dedicated leaders, Cathedral is determined to stay faithful to forming men as gifted thinkers and as generous servants. Whether our graduates don the vestments of pastoral service as priests or deacons or devote themselves to caring for an individual family, a young man who experiences the Cathedral spirit will be ready and willing to be a man for greatness. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 19, 2015 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION: Stefanie Gutierrez 917-587-2784 [email protected] Rocio Fidalgo 718-213-1955 [email protected] POPE FRANCIS NAMES TWO PRIESTS AS AUXILIARY BISHOPS FOR DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN Pope Francis has appointed two priests of the Diocese of Brooklyn – the Very Reverend James Massa, 54, and the Reverend Canon Witold Mroziewski, 49 – as auxiliary bishops of Brooklyn. Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, made the announcement public today in Washington, D.C. The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will ordain the new bishops at a Mass of Episcopal Ordination to be celebrated at the Co-Cathedral of Saint Joseph on July 20, 2015 at 2 p.m. “These two men represent the very best of the Diocese. One is a parish priest who at heart is a missionary pouring himself out for others. The other is a teacher but in fact very much a father to the young men of our diocese and beyond who are studying to be priests,” said Bishop DiMarzio. “I am deeply appreciative to these men for their tireless efforts. Bishop-elect Massa and Bishop-elect Mroziewski are men of faith who daily communicate the great joy of the Gospel. Each has taken on incredibly challenging tasks and not simply excelled but did so in a way that has demonstrated outstanding leadership and personal holiness.” The Very Reverend James Massa was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to the late Andrew and Irene Gilbert Massa. He attended Boston College and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Theology and History in 1982.
