athedral Prep began its illustrious history in the Fall of 1914 at the corners of Atlantic and Washington Avenues in , NY. In C1963 an additional campus was opened in Elmhurst, NY. The “two became one” at the Elmhurst site in 1985.

ounded as a preparatory high school, Cathedral was also a seminary – a place where a boy could be comfortable discerning Fa vocation to the diocesan priesthood at a young age. For over 100 years Cathedral has stayed faithful to its mission: to form the mind in the ways of academic excellence and the heart and soul in the ways of heroic virtue and belief.

roud to call over 4,800 men graduates, the program at Cathedral continues to offer young men living in Kings and Queens PCounties, as well as from the outlying areas, a personalized, superior education in an environment where growth in maturity and grace are encouraged and fostered. Keenly aware that both the Church and society need strong, dedicated leaders, Cathedral is determined to stay faithful to forming men as gifted thinkers and generous servants. Whether our graduates don the vestments of pastoral service as priests or deacons, or devote themselves to caring for an individual family, a young man who experiences the Cathedral spirit will be ready and willing to be a man for greatness.

2 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Words from the Principal Most Reverend , '65 Dear Fellow Alumni, Benefactors, and Friends of our Cathedral Prep: Liaison Very Rev. Joseph Fonti, '84 I hope our Annual Report finds you well, and, as always, I sincerely thank you for your support of our efforts here at Cathedral Preparatory School and Richie Diaz, '96 Seminary. Reverend Msgr. Steven Aguggia Recently, I had the great opportunity to visit a shelter for the homeless with Theresa Andersen some of our students. It was part of one of our renewed missions this year Giuseppe Campailla to give to others, as Jesus calls, us to do, without expectation of reward or compensation. As our students served dinner to the men of the shelter, I Matthew Dybus, '11 couldn’t help but notice how clearly gratitude flowed through everything Paul Friel, '85 that was happening: The mens’ gratitude towards our young men, as one exclaimed, “Amen! It’s great to see young people caring about us!” and our students’ gratitude in getting to serve those less Stephen Macri fortunate, as they said things like “it made me so thankful for all I have” and “it makes me think about Jerry Magaldi, '74 how ridiculous some of my complaints are.”

John O’Brien, '01 In keeping with this theme, I write to you this year with words of absolute gratitude. As you turn the Rocco Papandrea pages of this Annual Report, know that every success, every positive word, every note of progress in this report has the same foundation - a foundation of our gratitude to you. Whether your support of Brian Rooney our Cathedral Prep is in the prayers you say for our young men, the financial gift you give to support John Ryan, St. Pius X '75 these men, or just in your quiet dedication to all that Cathedral Prep stands for in our society and in our Church, I say to you, “THANK YOU.” Reverend Robert Whelan, '74 As you read this Annual Report, know that the 2018-2019 school year continues to be a great success, full of hope and continued great achievements. I welcome you always to call/email me or even visit Alumni Association Cathedral to hear and see all of the great things happening. Please always be assured of my personal gratitude for your continued support of our efforts and work at Cathedral Prep, and I hope you enjoy Executive Board the small snapshots of our Cathedral Prep held within this Report.

Arthur Vollmerhausen, '88 In humility and gratitude, President Vincent LaPuma, '01 President Emeritus All the best,

Kenneth Engesser, '74 Mr. Richie Diaz Frank Dwyer, '79 Principal Rev. Joseph Fonti, '84 Sal Candela, '02 John Ryan, St. Pius X, '75

3 FROM THE OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI AFFAIRS

Dear Fellow Alumni, Benefactors, and Friends of our Cathedral Prep: After over 30 years in financial services, I am happy to introduce myself as the new Director of Development & Alumni Affairs here at Cathedral Prep. Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, I am a 1975 graduate of St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in Uniondale and a 1979 graduate of Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception in Douglaston. I have been active in organizing various alumni events over the years and since 2015 continue to serve on the Cathedral Prep Board of Trustees. At one time there were three other schools similar to, and affiliated with, Cathedral Prep Queens: Cathedral Prep Manhattan, Cathedral Prep Brooklyn, and St. Pius X Prep on Long Island. Now all but Cathedral Prep Queens are closed. In recent years efforts have been underway to consolidate alumni of all four schools, given that alumni all share a common experience in formation and education, and that Cathedral Prep now draws students from across the Dioceses of Brooklyn, Rockville Centre and .

I am excited about this role because I have fond memories and appreciation for my St. Pius X alma mater and fellow alumni. The history and mission of St. Pius X Prep ties to Cathedral Prep today. St. Pius X Prep opened in 1961 as the dream of Bishop Walter Kellenberg, the first bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. St. Pius X Prep uniquely provided an environment for the discernment of priesthood and, as explained in its pamphlet to prospective students, St. Pius X Prep encouraged its students not only to be interested in their society but to be involved in it. This philosophy was evidenced when the school decided not to build boarding facilities so that at the end of each day students would return to the environment of a full family life.

While the school is long closed and nearly forgotten, Bishop Kellenberg's dream of a preparatory seminary has produced an association of alumni who are active today as clergy and laity throughout our parish communities within and outside of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. St. Pius X Prep proved to be a successful dream after all. Cathedral Prep continues the dream.

The St. Pius X Prep Alumni Scholarship Fund has been established to support students from the Diocese of Rockville Centre attending Cathedral Prep.

I look forward to partnering with Fr. Fonti, the faculty and staff teams, and our alumni, benefactors and friends to support the continuing success of Cathedral Prep.

John Ryan Director of Development and Alumni Affairs

“We want to thank you all for the wonderful family BBQ. The entire staff at Cathedral made last night a great starting experience for all the incoming boys and their families. My husband and I were very delighted. I must add, the gym- time, and some basketball after the BBQ was awesome! As you noticed, JohnAnthony could not wait to get into his Cathedral shirt, he even wore it today to school. He is so happy:) I sensed the connection between the boys. Ultimately, aside from a strong education, we just want JohnAnthony to be in the best possible setting. Last night helps confirm that we chose the right school. I see Cathedral as a brotherhood-school, which is the environment we want as a family for JohnAnthony.” TESTIMONIAL

While in Poland at World Youth Day, recent graduate, Pedro Castillo, `16, confirmed God’s will for him to discern a vocation to the priesthood. During his four years at Cathedral Prep, Pedro seriously Wdiscerned his vocation to the priesthood while achieving academic success. At graduation, he had planned to study engineering at City College.

Pedro said that he chose to follow God’s Will and not his own because, “He has never let me down.” Returning enthusiastically and joy filled to Cathedral he shared his good news with Mr. Diaz and Father Fonti and several of his classmates, who met to take him to breakfast. A member of the Neocatechumenal Way, Pedro has accepted their invitation to go to their seminary in Taiwan. As we continue to foster priestly vocations at Cathedral, we pledge our prayerful support to our brother. 29

Mother’s Event On Sunday, April 15, 2018, Cathedral Prep celebrated an early Mother’s Day with a Mass and brunch. At Mass, Father Fonti spoke about the special relationship a mother has with her child. After brunch each student presented his mother with an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, with Jesus in His mother’s arms. We thank all mothers and students who joined us for this event.

Cathedral Prep Fathers & Dads Come Together On Thursday, February 15th, our Cathedral Fathers, Frs. Fonti, Lee, & Bethge, hosted an evening for our Cathedral Dads, some of whom are “Crusaders” themselves. Celebrating the gift of fatherhood, our Fathers and Dads shared a meal together, listened to a conference on masculine spirituality given by Dr. Phil Franco, and ended the evening watching the Ranger/ Islander game.

A few steps further toward greatness … Conor is a graduate student at Molloy College preparing to become a nurse. Just behind the mall sits the hidden gem of the Diocese of Brooklyn: Cathedral Prep and Seminary. For over 100 years, young men have been formed intellectually and TESTIMONIAL spiritually in this small powerhouse of faith and education. The senior class that just departed the beloved school earned more than $9 million in college scholarships as they will now take what they have learned to prestigious universities all over the nation. While they move on with the gift of Cathedral formation and memories, many other young men will be setting foot in Cathedral for the first time. That is because each year, young men entering grades seven and eight enjoy the unique experience of the Father Troike Leadership Program, now running at Cathedral Prep for more than 50 years. The summer program, which begins on July 5, is a blend of academics, and preparation for high school and the TACHS exam. Add to this a generous helping of sports, activities, games and brotherhood, and you have a one-of-a kind program that is very popular with the young men who attend. Of course, it would not be Cathedral without a strong Catholic identity and an optional daily Mass as well. Neither summer camp nor summer school, the Father Troike Program encourages young men toward leadership and greatness through service, intellectual formation, prayer and fraternity. There is something for every young man who attends. Extremely affordable at only $500 for the entire month of July (July 5-27), Troike offers young men an invaluable glimpse of high school life and academics, helps them to meet new friends, and introduces them to Catholic leadership skills and spirituality. The high number of current Cathedral students who volunteer to work in the program demonstrates the positive effect this great summer program continues to have. Having attended and now aged out of the program, these current high school students love the program so much, they return as counselors each year. Anthony Leone will be a senior in September, and he credits the Troike program with his love for Cathedral as well as his success in high school. “The Troike program was the building block of my love for Cathedral,” he said. “The Program made me a better man in the classroom, on the sports field and in the chapel. It began my journey in becoming a man for greatness.” Anthony is one of the men who give back as a counselor. 40 Future Priests Get Together To Pray and Play Ball From "The Tablet" November 7, 2018, By Jorge I. Dominguez-Lopez On the Feast of All Saints, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio brought together seminarians of all levels to pray and play in fellowship. (Photo: Jorge I. Dominguez-Lopez) More than 200 students from all levels of seminary formation celebrated the Inter-Seminary Day of Prayer and Fellowship Nov. 1 at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. The day started with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. The bishop initiated this celebration with seminarians last year to get “them all together to celebrate the Feast of All Saints.” He also wanted them to “know one another, play some sports and activities, and get to see the grounds.” “This is my first year in the seminary and today is one big family reunion. We join our houses to make one. There is no difference — we are all family,” said Patrice Legoute. He studied at Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary, Elmhurst, from which he graduated last year. It was the first time he saw many of his old friends. “Being able to spend time with all of my brothers — is an excellent day,” he said. “I say to them, in the silence of your heart, listen to God’s call.”

Heroism vs. Holiness During his homily, the bishop told to the seminarians that the priestly vocation is a call to holiness. He told them that we sometimes considered saints to be heroes, but that there is a difference between heroism and holiness. “Heroism is instinctive. When we see something is wrong, we try to help. It is instinctive … How we compare that to holiness? What is the difference? … Holiness is not instinctive. We have to learn it. We have to work at it because holiness is trying to recreate the divine image in our lives, the divine image that somehow has been smudged by sin.” After Mass, the seminarians had breakfast and the rest of the day was a continuous friendly competition of football, basketball and soccer. “Today is our second annual inter-seminary day with Bishop DiMarzio and it is an opportunity to be with the seminarians who are at the high school, college, and theology level,” said Father Sean Suckiel, diocesan vocations director. “It is a day to be together, a day to build fraternity, and a day to support one another in our vocations.” The students came from St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie; the Cathedral Seminary House of Formation, Douglaston, and Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary, East Elmhurst. This time, a new group came to the gathering: 12 seminarians from the Redemptoris Mater Seminary, the new seminary of Neo-catechumenal Way created in the Diocese of Brooklyn this year. “I am in the Redemptorist Mater House of Formation and this my first year in the seminary,” Marcos Daniel Gonzalez said. “I feel great to be here and to be called. I see it as an election — God loved me so much that he elected me. He saw my poverty and my sins but he chose me to begin this mission.” Talking about the current crisis caused by the sins of some priests, Father Suckiel acknowledged that, “The difficult times the Church is facing right now is definitely having an impact on vocations and it should.” “Our young people should be aware of what is truly happening. This is also a time for these men to respond because we need good men, we need good holy men,” he said.
