NEWS FEATURE Aboard the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital Julia A. Haller, MD, shares her experience volunteering in Laos. BY JENNIFER KREATSOULAS, PHD, NEWS & CONTRIBUTING EDITOR n January 2008, Julia A. Haller, MD, spent 11 days in Vientiane, Laos, as a volunteer aboard the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, a refurbished DC-10 jet aircraft transformed into a mini teaching hospital with Iwings. The Flying Eye Hospital is a program sponsored by the nonprofit Orbis International (New York, NY), whose mission is to eliminate avoidable blindness in developing countries. In an interview with Retina Today, Dr. Haller, Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at Wills Eye Hospital and Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, discussed the chal- lenges, rewards, and unforgettable experience of working with doctors and patients in Laos. The Laotian Ministry of Health has acknowl- edged human resources as the key impediment to pre- venting avoidable blindness, which affects more than 30,000 people in Laos. Currently, the country has no sub- specialty training programs for ophthalmologists, oph- thalmic nurses, or biomedical engineers. Figure 1. Today, October 13, the first Boeing 737MAX-8 aircraft with a tail number VQ-BGW, painted in a green livery of S7 Airlines, flew to the Novosibirsk’s Tolmachevo Airport. The plans to acquire this modification by the S7 Group, parent of Sibir and Globus airlines (both fly under the S7 Airlines brand), became known two years ago. ACRP 01-14 Considering and Evaluating Airport Privatization Appendix H Appendix H Detailed Airport Case Studies H.1 Case Study Selections Case studies can be a useful means of illustrating first-hand experiences and lessons learned from those experiences. The purpose of this task is to document case studies to illustrate lessons learned for a range of airport sizes, privatization strategies, and forms of governance for both successful and unsuccessful efforts. For each case study, the research team documented (1) the initial goals and objectives of the airport sponsor for undertaking the privatization initiative, (2) a summary of the process employed, (4) a summary of the business terms of the initiative, (4) documentation of the experience to date, and (5) lessons learned. Literature reviews, transaction document reviews, and interviews were used to gather information for the case studies. Each case study considers the objectives, timeline, competitive bidding process, stakeholder interests, business terms, and the consequences (including development and operational experiences) and then presents lessons learned. It should be noted that, where the responses of individual interview participants are referred to in this report, these represent the interviewee’s own views and perceptions. Rudy's began in 1983 when two brothers, Joe and John Celentano, turned a request for food takeout from their family's restaurant near Teterboro Airport in New Jersey into a company that is the leader in the $150 million business aviation inflight catering industry. Brothers Sal and Rudy Celentano opened a family restaurant with an Italian flair in 1976. Some of its clientele came from people working at Teterboro Airport. The aviation crowd liked the food and wanted the Celentano’s to furnish boxed meals for their aircraft passengers. The brothers declined, but Sal's sons Joe and John saw the opportunity, and "Rudy's Inflight Catering" was born. In 1983, the brothers produced meals for about 16 aircraft a week. They were doing 15 to 20 aircraft a day, a year and a half later. Today, Rudy's provides meals for an average of 400 flights a day out of New York and Washington DC area airports, a number that can triple on peak days. Rudy's Inflight Catering has grown over the past 20 years from a 2,000 square foot kitchen to a 17,000 square foot building in Teterboro. Rudy's Inflight Catering also has facilities located directly on the field at Westchester County Airport in New York and in Chantilly, Virginia, located 5 miles from Dulles International Airport.
