Haller, MD, spent 11 days in Vientiane, Laos, as a volunteer aboard the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, a refurbished DC-10 jet aircraft transformed into a mini teaching hospital with Iwings. The Flying Eye Hospital is a program sponsored by the nonprofit Orbis International (New York, NY), whose mission is to eliminate avoidable blindness in developing countries. In an interview with Retina Today, Dr. Haller, Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at Wills Eye Hospital and Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, discussed the chal- lenges, rewards, and unforgettable experience of working with doctors and patients in Laos.     Project Officers Orbis is a non-profit organization based in New York Orbis that works to prevent and treat blindness through hands-on training, public health education, and improved access to quality eye care, advocacy and partnerships with local health care organizations. Since 1982, Orbis has been a pioneer in global eye health, and has worked in 92 countries. Orbis story began with our Flying Eye Hospital, a fully-equipped mobile teaching hospital. We have long-term programs in countries including Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, India, South Africa, Vietnam and Zambia – with additional programs in parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.     Experience My Experience with Orbis International and the Flying Eye Hospital in Ethiopia Jibat G. Soboka,1 Omar Salamanca,2 Alana Calise.3 The Experience Figure 1. Operating Room Within the Flying Eye Hospital Approximately 80% of blindness in Ethiopia is avoidable. According to the national blindness, low vision and trachoma survey in Ethiopia, over 1.6% of the Ethiopian population is blind, and 3.7% live with low vision. This is higher than the world averages of 1.2% and 3.4%, respectively. The major causes of blindness and visual impairment are preventable or treatable, including cataract and trachoma.1, 2 Despite the huge burden, human resources available for eye health in Ethiopia are alarmingly low. There are approximately 140 ophthalmologists working to serve the millions of people who are blind and visually impaired, and more ophthalmologists are required to meet urgent eye care needs.3 The cataract surgical rate in Ethiopia is 500 surgeries per million people, though the expected target is 2,000 surgeries per million.4, 5 This shows that eye care services need to be increased in Ethiopia to meet the burden of untreated eye disease.
