John Lynch is Emeritus Professor of Latin American History in the University of London, where he has spent most of his academic career, first at University College, then from 1974 to 1987 as Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies. The main focus of his work has been Spanish America in the period 1750–1850. There are those, it is true, who question the importance of his career and reject the cult of the hero. For them the meaning of liberation is to be found in the study of economic struc- tures, social classes and the international conjuncture, not in military actions and the lives of liberators. In this view Carlyle’s discourse on heroes is a mu- seum piece and his elevation of heroes as the prime subject of history a misconception. -

ABSTRACT The history of the British Army in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars is generally associated with stories of British military victory and the campaigns of the Duke of Wellington. An intrinsic aspect of the historiography is the argument that, following British defeat in the Low Countries in 1795, the Army was transformed by the military reforms of His Royal Highness, Frederick Duke of York. This thesis provides a critical appraisal of the reform process with reference to the organisation, structure, ethos and learning capabilities of the British Army and evaluates the impact of the reforms upon British military performance in the Low Countries, in the period 1793 to 1814, via a series of narrative reconstructions. This thesis directly challenges the transformation argument and provides a re-evaluation of British military competency in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. -

They contain the Captainular Acts of the Meetings of the National Assumption Lobby in the period 1805 and 1806. Our intention is to demonstrate, through these demands, and to expose an insipient and colonized Assumption, but hardworking, politicized and developing. Demonstrate the same, the activity of a state apparatus that in the past played an important role together with the people: the Cabildo. On the other hand we intend to contribute to clarify points of questions taken to centuries and that with this monographic work are alls of the past and brought to the historical present. INTRODUCTION To the team of students of the ONE Master's Course, it was given to present a work, that of doing a study of the Chapter Acts contained in a folder corresponding to the period of a full decade: from 1801 to 1811. These are the years that anticipated the most important event for the Republic of Paraguay: its Independence.From these years it was up to us to do the study of the years 1805 and 1806. -

Teaching the Age of Revolutions HA Teacher Fellowship Programme 2018 (Secondary) Ben Walsh Week 4: What were the wider consequences of the Napoleonic Wars? For Week 4 the focus was on the impact of the Napoleonic wars. In recent times, scholars have been emphasising the far reaching effects of these wars. The Fellows were asked to consider some points set out by Dr Ben Marsh of the University of Kent about the wars: Confrontation of larger armies than have taken the field for centuries Regime change, bloodshed, and economic malaise feed off one another Mass conscription and participation brings new styles to global warfare Advances made in technology, recruitment, training, and organisation French pioneer artillery and new infantry formations to great effect British and allies struggle to contain Napoleon but avoid knockout until 1812 Von Clausewitz constructs new theory of war on basis of experiences The Fellows were then asked to suggest how they might use the Battle of Waterloo as a hook to help students to think more widely about the context and impact of the Napoleonic Wars: You can do this by focussing on the domestic impact in Britain or look more widely at the European context. Begin by using the knowledge of Waterloo you gained on the residential and broaden your thinking using the suggested resources below. Your plan should focus on the consequences of the Napoleonic Wars. Some of the Fellows considered ways of giving the Battle a wider and deeper context than they might normally consider, drawing on up to sate scholarship to support this: As Mather's article notes, Napoleon had threatened to invade Britain, but this was not the only reason for the British to become involved in a war against the French. -

Morris All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Crucibles of Virtue and Vice: The Acculturation of Transatlantic Army Officers, 1815-1945 John F. Morris Throughout the long nineteenth century, the European Great Powers and, after 1865, the United States competed for global dominance, and they regularly used their armies to do so. While many historians have commented on the culture of these armies’ officer corps, few have looked to the acculturation process itself that occurred at secondary schools and academies for future officers, and even fewer have compared different formative systems. In this study, I home in on three distinct models of officer acculturation—the British public schools, the monarchical cadet schools in Imperial Germany, Austria, and Russia, and the US Military Academy—which instilled the shared and recursive sets of values and behaviors that constituted European and American officer cultures. Specifically, I examine not the curricula, policies, and structures of the schools but the subterranean practices, rituals, and codes therein. What were they, how and why did they develop and change over time, which values did they transmit and which behaviors did they perpetuate, how do these relate to nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century social and cultural phenomena, and what sort of ethos did they produce among transatlantic army officers? Drawing on a wide array of sources in three languages, including archival material, official publications, letters and memoirs, and contemporary nonfiction and fiction, I have painted a highly detailed picture of subterranean life at the institutions in this study. -
