The Fall of the Dubrovnik Republic and the Establishment of the French Administration in Dubrovnik in 1808 and 1809
55 Original Paper UDC 949.713-2Dubrovnik "18" THE FALL OF THE DUBROVNIK REPUBLIC AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE FRENCH ADMINISTRATION IN DUBROVNIK IN 1808 AND 1809 STJEPAN ĆOSIĆ ABSTRACT: This paper is concerned with the state of social and political affairs in Dubrovnik prior to the abolishment of the Republic. It further illus trates the first phase of the organization and exertion of the new French ad ministration in 1808 and 1809. In order to provide a more complete and objective insight into the signifi cance of the French abolishment of the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) as well as to grasp the social, political and administrative changes which fol lowed, it is necessary to elucidate Dubrovnik at that time in its broader so cial, economic, and political context.1 Stjepan Ćosić, member of the Institute for Historical Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Dubrovnik. Address: Zavod za povijesne znanosti HAZU, Lapadska obala 6, 20000 Dubrovnik, Croatia. A longer version of this article has already been published in Croatian under the following title: »O slomu Republike i ustroju francuske uprave u Dubrovniku 1808. i 1809.« Anali Zavoda za povijesne znanosti HAZU u Dubrovniku 33 (1995): pp. 177-203. 56 Dubrovnik Annals 2 (1998) Social and historical background preceding the fall of the Republic The turn of the eighteenth century witnessed some radical social changes throughout the European continent. The ideas of the French revolution, post- revolutionary events, and the Napoleonic campaigns enforced a considerable incursion upon the European political layout, thus introducing the concept of liberty with a profoundly new ideological meaning. -

In 1989 a group of historians, buffs and aficionados of the then Soviet Union, for the first time, were invited to participate in the bicentennial anniversary of the French Revolution in Paris. Prior to that, we all had been studying the life and battles of the great Corsican in groups or in solo, but there it all came together. Dressed in Napoleonic uniforms as a part of the international “French” re-enactment group, we were allowed – for the first time in our history! – to visit Napoleon’s tomb in Les Invalides. -

Napoleon's Marshalate and the Defeat of 1813
A PRE-PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTION: NAPOLEON’S MARSHALATE AND THE DEFEAT OF 1813 Eric C. Smith, B.S. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2014 APPROVED: Michael V. Leggiere, Major Professor Richard G. Lowe, Committee Member Richard B. McCaslin, Committee Member and Chair of the Department of History Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Smith, Eric C. A Pre-Professional Institution: Napoleon’s Marshalate and the Defeat of 1813. Master of Arts (History), August 2014, 195 pp., 13 tables, 8 figures, bibliography, 155 titles. Napoleon’s defeat in 1813 generates a number of explanations from historians regarding why he lost this epic campaign which ultimately resulted in France losing control over the German states. Scholars discussing the French marshalate of the Napoleonic era frequently assert that these generals could not win battles without the emperor present. Accustomed to assuming a subordinate role under Bonaparte’s direct supervision, these commanders faltered when deprived of the strong hand of the master. This thesis contributes to this historiographical argument by positing that the pre-professional nature of Napoleon’s marshalate precluded them from adapting to the evolving nature of warfare during the First French Empire. Emerging from non-military backgrounds and deriving their capabilities solely from practical experience, the marshals failed to succeed at endeavors outside of their capacity. An examination of the military administration of the Old Regime, the effects of the French Revolution on the French generalate, and the circumstances under which Bonaparte labored when creating the imperial marshalate demonstrates that issues systemic to the French high command contributed to French defeat in 1813. -
Victorine De Chastenay
A Dispatch from the French Minister of War Clarke to General Caffarelli, the Commander of the Northern Army in Spain, from the Year 1812
Karsten Hansky Dispatch from Minister of War Henri Clarke to General Caffarelli 17.06.2021 A dispatch from the French Minister of War Clarke to General Caffarelli, the commander of the Northern Army in Spain, from the year 1812 The dispatch presented below was offered by an American dealer on an internet auction platform in the spring of 2021. There is no further information about its provenance except that the dealer had acquired it at an estate auction. The dispatch was written on October 19, 1812 by the French Minister of War Henri Clarke, comte d'Hunebourg, duc de Feltre [1] to the French General Marie-François Auguste de Caffarelli du Falga [2], who was commander of the French Army of the North in Spain at the time. Historical and military background of the dispatch In order to be able to classify the dispatch historically and militarily, the situation in Spain at that time is briefly described below. Detailed information can be found in [3]. In 1812, France had occupied large parts of Spain. The French troops were divided into several armies: • Army of the North under the command of General Caffarelli. • Army of Portugal under the command of General Souham [4]. • Army of the Centre under the command of King Joseph Bonaparte [5] (brother of Napoleon Bona- parte), who was assisted by Marshal Jourdan [6] as Chief of Staff • Army of the South under the command of Marshal Soult [7]. • Army of Aragon and Valencia under the command of Marshal Suchet [8] • Army of Catalonia under the command of General Decaen [9] Opposing the French armies was an alliance of the British Expeditionary Force and Portuguese troops.
