ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES AND LIFESTYLE CHOICES ARE DEFINING ISSUES OF OUR TIME

The concept of circularity allows us to advance sustainable consumption and production and the transition to inclusive green economies: how to reduce and eliminate waste and pollution through intelligent design; how to keep products and materials in use; and how to regenerate and grow natural wealth through economic and fiscal policies that nurture and embrace nature-based solutions.

All with the goal of delivering on the 2030 Agenda and the Goals.

/ FACING CHALLENGES

Carbon and material intensive economic growth, rising social and environmental inequalities, and an increasingly unstable climate are undermining our ability to produce shared prosperity – and offer a chance to rethink and repurpose the economies of tomorrow.

UNEP Resource Efficiency 2020+ 20 20 + / RELENTLESS DEMAND Global material extraction and material productivity 1970 — 2017

Global resource use has more than tripled since 1970.

Global material demand per capita grew from 7.4 tons in 1970 to 12.2 tons in 2017.

Material productivity EXTRACTION, MILLION TONNES started to decline around 2000 and has MATERIAL PRODUCTIVITY, INDEX 1970 = 100 stagnated in recent years.

/ CREATING SOLUTIONS

Reshaping the economies of tomorrow will require new approaches and partnerships to increase impact and innovation. Building circularity and accelerating sustainable consumption and production patterns (SDG12) can create cost effective solutions to advance the 2030 Agenda. Economic, trade and fiscal policies to support these solutions are required to reinforce nature- based cycles, to grow natural wealth and close inequality gaps.
