The war system is an important determiner of masculinity such that variations in one impact the other. The total surrender of Germany in 1945, combined with the association of the Nazi regime with heroic, soldierly masculinity, has opened the door in post-World War II Germany for new forms of masculinity to arise. A key value in the new configuration is the increased importance of refusal and the decreased importance of obedience and subordination. Between 1945 and 1990, Germany remained a nation both divided and occupied. This, combined with the literal feminization of German society in the immediate post-war period, led to the valorization of refusal. In effect, in an occupied society, the relationship of masculinity to nation-state is shifted. At the same time, of course, market pressures have led to a more individuated society—yet it is important to point out that though refusal has become much more common in all Western societies, in none of the traditional Great Powers has the culture of the military itself become so accommodating to the idea of refusal. This shift, I think, can be attributed to the institutionalization of refusal within the Bundeswehr, and its valorization in German society as a whole, as subsequent generations encounter the failed refusal of the Nazi period in a war system context that has isolated the German military from deadly combat—a situation which is, of course, changing in the here and now. These trends can only really be understood through an analysis that triangulates on changing masculinity by making use of a variety of evidence, historical, literary, institutional and personal. Finally, the relationship between war and masculinity itself should be seen in a longer evolutionary perspective and assumptions about inevitability challenged through comparative ethnography and review of the archeological evidence. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Steven Lester Gardiner holds a B.S. in anthropology and sociology from Lewis & Clark College and a M.A. in cultural anthropology from Cornell University. Gardiner is a fifth-generation Oregonian who has lived and worked in Portland, Gresham and Boring, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; Lawton, Oklahoma; El Paso, Texas; Newport Beach, California; White Sands, New Mexico; Ithaca and New York, New York; and Scwäbisch Gmünd and Berlin, Germany. He spent the early part of the 1980s in the first Pershing II nuclear missile unit to be deployed in Germany. More recently he spent seven years as a researcher, writer, editor and director for a Portland- and Seattle-based civil rights group, the Coalition for Human Dignity. In June 2003 he married Angie Reed Garner and they live together in Prospect, Kentucky. iii for Angie Reed iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation has been almost seven years in the making, from the moment I entered graduate school—for the second time—at Cornell, to completion. Over the course of all those years, moving from Portland to Ithaca, Ithaca to Berlin, Berlin to Chicago and Chicago to Kentucky, Angie Reed Garner, my partner and wife, has been there with me. Without her encouragement and support, I would not have gone back to graduate school, would not have undertaken this particular research, and would not have finished writing the dissertation itself. She assisted materially in the research process itself, using her far superior social skills to draw out reluctant informants and make connections that would have been impossible for me to make alone. The ideas contained herein have been hashed out in endless conversations with her and she has been my first and most important reader and editor. Whatever merit this project may have is largely her doing. This dissertation is as much hers as it is mine and my thanks are to her first, last and always. During the spring of my second year at Cornell my father passed away, dying of lung cancer. We lived in different worlds and I am left with the feeling that I never tried hard enough to help him understand mine. As this is a work about masculinity, and each man grows up to some extent in the shadow of his father, I nod to his memory. The things I learned from him, for better or worse, are part of who I am. One of the last things he said to me before dying was that he was proud of me. It was one of the few times in his life he had ever said so. My mother deserves special thanks for attempting to understand the v strange habits of her academically-inclined, globe-trotting son. From her I learned what I know of how to be a good person. She provided financial support and encouragement through the long years I worked for the Coalition for Human Dignity, a period that forms an essential, if invisible, backdrop to this work.     From Unification to Integration: The German North Sea Ports' absorption into Imperial Germany, 1866–1914 Henning Kuhlmann Submitted for the award of Master of Philosophy in History Cardiff University 2016 Summary This thesis concentrates on the economic integration of three principal German North Sea ports – Emden, Bremen and Hamburg – into the Bismarckian nation- state. Prior to the outbreak of the First World War, Emden, Hamburg and Bremen handled a major share of the German Empire’s total overseas trade. However, at the time of the foundation of the Kaiserreich, the cities’ roles within the Empire and the new German nation-state were not yet fully defined. Initially, Hamburg and Bremen insisted upon their traditional role as independent city-states and remained outside the Empire’s customs union. Emden, meanwhile, had welcomed outright annexation by Prussia in 1866. After centuries of economic stagnation, the city had great difficulties competing with Hamburg and Bremen and was hoping for Prussian support. This thesis examines how it was possible to integrate these port cities on an economic and on an underlying level of civic mentalities and local identities. Existing studies have often overlooked the importance that Bismarck attributed to the cultural or indeed the ideological re-alignment of Hamburg and Bremen. Therefore, this study will look at the way the people of Hamburg and Bremen traditionally defined their (liberal) identity and the way this changed during the 1870s and 1880s. It will also investigate the role of the acquisition of colonies during the process of Hamburg and Bremen’s accession. In Hamburg in particular, the agreement to join the customs union had a significant impact on the merchants’ stance on colonialism.

Therefore it was suggested lately to use the word „negationism“ instead. A conception of “negationism” (Auerbach 1993a; Fromm and Kernbach 1994, p. 9; Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz 1994) or “holocaust denial” (Lipstadt 1993, p. 20) would neglect the additional components of “revision- ism”, which are logically connected with the denying of the holocaust, this being the extreme variant.

The paper binders and folders in which these documents are filed bear the imprint of the Heeresarchiv at Potsdam, which was the custodian of the collection. Some folders also bear the earlier label of the Geheimes Archiv des Kriegsminsteriums or of the Kriegs Archiv des Grossen Generalstabes; these institutions appear to have been the previous repositories for parts of the Reichsarchiv; in 1936, however, it was separated from the Reichsarchiv, and all military records and related materials in the legal custody of the latter were transferred to it. During the military operations in Germany in 1945 the documents reproduced in this microfilm publication came into the possession of the United States armed forces. In 1947 the War Department transferred them to the National Archives, where they constitute part of a body of records designated as Record Group 242, World War II Collection of Seized Enemy Records. Herman von Boyen was born at Kreuzberg, East Prussia, on June 23, 1771, and died at Berlin on February 15, 1848. He saw early service as a staff officer in Poland, 1794-96, and soon became widely known as a military writer. After the Peace of Tilsit he was made a member of the Commission for Military Reorganization, under the presidency of General von Scharnhorst, and was appointed to the Prussian Ministry of War.

    Otto Ernst Remer von Dr. Claudia Fröhlich Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover 1. Prozessgeschichte Drei Tage vor der Landtagswahl in Niedersachsen, am 3. Mai 1951, hielt Otto Ernst Remer, der zweite Vorsitzende der rechtsextremen Sozialistischen Reichspartei (SRP), in Braunschweig eine öffentliche Wahlkampfrede. Wie schon mehrmals zuvor, diffamierte Remer auch in dieser Rede die Widerstandskämpfer des 20. Juli 1944. Er sagte: „Diese Verschwörer sind zum Teil in starkem Maße Landesverräter gewesen, die vom Ausland bezahlt wurden.“ Remers Rede markierte den Höhepunkt einer Anfang der 1950er Jahre breiten Verratskampagne gegen Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg und die Männer des Widerstands, die am 20. Juli 1944 versucht hatten, Hitler durch ein Bombenattentat in der Wolfsschanze zu töten und die Herrschaft des Nationalsozialismus zu beenden. Neben den in der SRP versammelten ehem. Nationalsozialisten verleumdeten Vertreter der Deutschen Partei (DP), wie der Bundestagsabgeordnete Wolfgang Hedler, und Funktionäre der Verbands deutscher Soldaten (VdS) die Widerstandskämpfer als Verräter. Auch westdeutsche Gerichte kamen mehrfach zu dem Ergebnis, Widerstand gegen den NS-Staat sei nicht rechtmäßig, sondern Verrat gewesen. So stellte das Landgericht München I 1951 fest, die „Standgerichtsverfahren“ gegen die Regimegegner Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Wilhelm Canaris, Hans von Dohnanyi, Karl Sack, Hans Oster und Ludwig Gehre hätten das „gerichtliche Gesicht gewahrt“. Nach damals geltendem Recht hätten die Widerstandskämpfer den Tatbestand des Hoch- und Landesverrats erfüllt. (vgl. Perels; Spendel) Der 1951 in Braunschweig amtierende Generalstaatsanwalt Fritz Bauer beobachtete die politischen Kampagnen gegen die Regimegegner und die Entlegitimierung ihres Handelns durch westdeutsche Gerichte mit großer Sorge. Der Widerstand gegen den NS-Staat habe das 1 immer gültige Recht des Bürgers realisiert, gegen staatliches Unrecht aufzubegehren.

Estos “negacionistas” son, en realidad, publicistas de extrema derecha, neonazis, islamistas integristas, etc. Los “negacionistas” afirman que el Holocausto nunca ocurrió y que la cifra de judíos muertos (más de seis millones) se ha exagerado. Entre los “negacionistas” nos encontramos con Paul Rassinier, Robert Farausson, David Irving, Roger Garaudy (después de haberse convertido al Islam, a raiz de su matrimonio con una palestina y hacerse llamar Regaa Garaudy), el líder iraní Mahmud Ahdmadinejad, el neonazi catalán Pedro Varela Geiss y el obispo católico integrista ultraconservador Richard Williamson. Ahora bien, todo historiador serio, en su labor investigadora, busca nuevas fuentes, “revisa” las fuentes ya conocidas y las obras de otros historiadores, que ha consultado y leído, para tratar de ponerse al día y abrir nuevos caminos y nuevas vías e ir avanzando, paso a paso, hacia un mejor y más completo conocimiento de la verdad histórica.
