  • Friends of UEFA EURO 2012 Poland
Friends of UEFA EURO 2012 Poland Leszek Blanik Leszek Blanik was an Olympic champion gymnast, who lends his name to one of the more complex moves on the vault: a double and a half front handspring in a pike position followed by a double back Tsukahara. It was the vault that brought him gold at the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Blanik retired in 2010 and set up a training centre in Gdansk, his home since 1996. Asked what a gymnast feels before the vault, he once famously replied: "The last five minutes are a nightmare. Hundreds of thoughts stream through your head but one in particular: let's get this over with." Jerzy Bralczyk Jerzy Bralczyk is a linguistic scholar specialising in the relationship between language and the media, advertising and politics. A professor since 2000, he is an eminent member of the Polish Language Council and Polish Linguistic Society, and also advises on ethics at the Warsaw Stock Exchange. He became well known as host of television show Mówi się (So they say) and now presents a daily radio programme, Słowo o słowie (A word about the word). He has still found time to write several books – yet as his hobbies include collecting old manuals of proper speech and conduct, his work is his passion. Marek Kamiński Marek Kamiński is an explorer, author and photographer, who in 1995 became the first person to reach the North and South Poles in a single year unassisted. He has led numerous expeditions to both Poles since, as well as climbing the likes of Kilimanjaro and Mount Vinson, Antarctica's highest peak.

  • Boxen Ohne Promis

  • The Violence in Boxing Published: 2006.07.06 Wojciech J
Archives of Budo, 2006, Vol. 2: 1-10 Received: 2006.04.25 Accepted: 2006.06.12 The violence in boxing Published: 2006.07.06 Wojciech J. Cynarski1 ABD–G, Artur Litwiniuk2ABDE Authors’ contributions: 1 Faculty of Physical Education, University of Rzeszów, Rzeszów, Poland A Study design 2 Academy of Physical Education, Warsaw, Biała Podlaska branch, Poland B Data collection C Statistical analysis D Data interpretation E Literature search F Manuscript preparation G Funds collection Summary Violence has many faces. It may express itself in a morally justified and socially accepted action. However, in a situation when it serves destruction or represents the civilisation of death, it becomes morally reprehensible and is contested as such. Examples of it are popularised in media, mainly TV, in scenes of violence and cruelty (mainly for commercial reasons) and participation in gladiatorial shows, where the contestants risk life and health and the spectators satisfy their primitive instincts. The article is focused mainly on the cultural phenomenon of boxing and other similar combat sports and they reflect on the show of violence. It analyses the problem of aggression as a source of violence; the presence of brutality and violence in mass and sport culture, and presents relations of professional boxing to the contemporary gladiatorship. Apart from the issues of boxing and boxers’ ethics, the cases of extraordinary Polish professional boxers have been presented. Martial arts (e.g. karate) have been compared with contact combat sports – boxing and kick-boxing. This comparison indicates the unquestionable superiority of the noble, traditional ways. The far-Eastern martial arts, representing the way of non-aggression and overcoming one’s own weaknesses, counteract the cult of force and violence.
