J(eljeJ to a coLorfuL Gfmerican tradition At the outbreak of the Spanish-American War. the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry was raised by Theodore Roosevelt and Leonard Wood. It included on its rolls many cowboys and ranchmen among whom Roosevelt had spent much time earlier in his career. Because these hard-riding. hard-fighting men were experts in handling rough and unbroken mounts. the regiment be came popularly kl}own as the "Rough Riders." As ranking officer. Colonel Roosevelt personally led the Rough Riders in the historic storming of San Juan Hill which resulted in dici sive American victory.
