I am selling the cream of my collection.” Eric Clapton, February 2004 Crossroads Guitar Auction Eric Clapton and Friends for the Crossroads Centre June 24, 2004 New York – On June 24, 1999, Christie’s New York organized A Selection of Eric Clapton’s Guitars ~ In Aid of the Crossroads Centre, a sale that became legendary overnight. Exactly five years later, on June 24, 2004, Christie’s will present the sequel when a group of 56 guitars, described by Eric Clapton as “the cream of my collection,” as well as instruments donated by musician friends such as Pete Townshend, will be offered. • Brixworth and District Newsletter Learn, Laugh, Live
Brixworth and District Newsletter Learn, laugh, live Registered Charity No 1178196 Issue 76 August 2021 THE BIG DEBATE – WHO IS THE GREATEST GUITARIST With so many talented and accomplished musicians using the guitar as their instrument of choice, from the early bluesmen to modern-day shredders and rockers, it is inevitable that no two-people will choose the same guitarist as their “greatest guitarist of all time”. It would be very easy for me to say that, in my opinion, my vote would go to …………. However, that is not my intention. Instead, this month’s musical journey may, hopefully, shine some light on a few players with whom you might not be too familiar, and who you might like to give a further look and listen to after this. Although a guitar is just a guitar, the sounds that they make in the hands of the ‘top players’ can be very different, as I will endeavour to demonstrate in this month’s randomly ordered selection. We start off with a player who is technically perfect, and whom we saw playing the piano in an earlier musical edition of the newsletter. That is ERIC JOHNSON, who is way above the technical skills of the more well-known Eric Clapton. The track I have selected really does demonstrate his virtuosity on the 6-string Fender Stratocaster, the tonal quality and changes are superb and a delight on the ears - Eric Johnson - Trail of Tears ‘Live 1988’ - YouTube Jazzing it up a bit, we have Swedish showman YNGWIE (Ing-Vay) MALMSTEEN, whose concert and album playlists includes classical pieces from Paganini, Vivaldi, Bach, etc.

  • Eric Johnson
ERIC JOHNSON The guitar has been very good to Eric Johnson, earning him international renown as a player, composer, recording artist and live entertainer as well as an ever-growing audience of admirers. And Eric Johnson has been very good to the guitar, spotlighting its myriad melodic, sonic and lyrical splendors, paying homage to its heroes and innovators, collaborating and playing with many of its finest contemporary talents, and fostering its continuing vibrancy as a primarily instrumental genre in popular music. “He's an extraordinary guitar player accessible to ordinary music fans,” notes the Memphis Commercial Appeal. That’s because Eric Johnson plays music and not just the guitar. He is also a gifted player of the piano (his first instrument) as well as songwriter, singer and song interpreter. Or more succinctly, Eric Johnson is a diverse, versatile and fully realized musical creator who plays guitar like no one else The pivotal event in Johnson's rise to becoming, as Guitar Player says, “one of the most respected guitarists on the planet," was his million-selling, now-classic 1990 album Ah Via Musicom (which loosely translates as "communicating through music"). It was his second release, following Tones, his 1986 major label debut. Musicom yielded three Top 10 singles – "Cliffs of Dover," which has become Johnson's signature song and won a Best Rock Instrumental Grammy, and "Trademark" and "Righteous." It made him the first artist to ever score three Top 10 instrumentals. Now, 28 years later, he revisits that landmark recording with a 2018 tour on which he will play the album – hailed as a "masterwork" in Amazon.com's review – in its entirety.

10/10/13 Experience Hendrix at the Fabulous Fox America's News English Experience Hendrix at the Fabulous Fox Forsyth County News (Cumming, GA) - Sunday, March 21, 2010 Readability: >12 grade level (Lexile: 1310L) Author: Ira Miller; Columnist, [email protected] Jimi Hendrix died on Sept. 18, 1970. I remember the date because that was my first birthday. And even though I can't play a lick of guitar, I have inherited a love of music. If you love music, you will love being at the Fabulous Fox on Saturday night as "Experience Hendrix" heads to Atlanta. This is the fourth edition of the biennial concert tour paying homage to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. Joe Satriani, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Brad Whitford (of Aerosmith), Doyle Bramhall II, Ernie Isley, Living Colour, Susan Tedeschi, Double Trouble's Chris Layton, Robert Randolph, along with original Hendrix bassist Billy Cox will be performing music written and inspired by the legend. Cox, who first befriended Hendrix when the two were in the 101st Airborne division of the US Army, played in both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys. "It's a thrill for me to play Jimi's music for audiences now as it was in the 1960s. The Experience Hendrix tours have shown how timeless this music really is," Cox said. Featured in every show are signature songs including "Purple Haze," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," "The Wind Cries Mary," "Little Wing" and "Red House." Kenny Wayne Shepherd, a veteran of several Experience Hendrix tours remarked: "Jimi Hendrix's music has really inspired [me] to push the limits of my own music.

  • Guitar 2: Wes Montgomery
Wes Montgomery (1923-1968) (The videos listed here can be found on the Quia.com site. If you need your password again let me know) One of the the most influential guitarist in the 20th century. Not just for jazz, but for all styles. Many fellow jazz guitarists consider Montgomery the greatest influence among modern jazz guitarists. Joe Pass said, "To me, there have been only three real innovators on the guitar--Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, and Django Reinhardt," In addition, George Benson attests, "Wes had a corn on his thumb, which gave his sound that point. He would get one sound for the soft parts, and then that point by using the corn. That's why no one will ever match Wes. And his thumb was double-jointed. He could bend it all the way back to touch his wrist, which he would do to shock people." Kenny Burrell states, "It was an honor that he called me as his second guitarist for a session." In addition, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix, David Becker, Joe Diorio, Steve Lukather and Pat Martino have pointed to him numerous times as a great influence. Please read his biography at Wikipedia.com. Here is the link; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wes_Montgomery Define: 1) Montgomery's solos were defined by a three tiered method. A) single line B) octaves C) Block Chords Define what the playing style means: a) single line b) octaves c)block chords 2) What was the reason for his distinctive sound? 3) Try playing any melody or song you know very well using this technique.
