    Title : British Travellers’ image perspectives of Brazil as a tourism destination Autoria: Luiz Gustavo Medeiros Barbosa, Isobel O´neil, Cristina Teixera marins Abstract Over the last couple of years in Britain there has been an explosion of Brazilian favours in popular culture and the increased cultural interest in Brazil seems to be mirrored by an increased interest in Brazil by the travel and tourism sector. Therefore, mainstream operators are also looking to Brazil. However, it is also the case that Brazil has a reputation for insecurity due to gun crime and high crime levels relating to muggins against tourists. Otherwise, many positive organic sources have raised the profile of Brazil in Britain. It is with this in mind that the following research undertook an exploratory study of British Travellers'image perspectives as a tourism destination. Based on literature about destination image management and quantitative research, this study concludes that Brazil has a strong image, both before and after experience, with regard to beautiful natural attractions and beaches and the atmosphere, culture and people. Presently, the image of Brazil as a country for adventure sports and historical cities is weaker than that of sun and sea. British tourists after visitation have a less negative impression about issues related to crime and social problems. 1. Data collection 34 Abstract The objective of this study is to better understand the determinants of criminality rate in Brazil, more specifically the determinants of homicides. I based myself on Becker’s model of criminal rational behavior. After selecting some economical and sociological variables, I run a cross sectional regression using the data of 2010 from 608 Brazilian municipalities. My main result suggests that inequality has an impact on the homicide rate while poverty does not. Furthermore, there is evidence proving that urbanization and unemployment are positively related to the homicides, whereas education is negatively related. On the other hand the age composition of the population is positively related only until a certain level. 1. Introduction Criminality is a problem that has repercussions in different fields. Our purpose is to present reflections that help understand the impasses which ultimately led to the burial of a reputedly successful public policy and to a return to the old way public safety has historically been managed by Brazilian federative states. Our findings inform that the priority agenda of integration promoted by the State Secretariat of Social Defense did manage to institutionalize itself for some time. Nonetheless, as the office goes through political transformations, priorities in the agenda also change, denoting path dependence, given the resumption of the institutional arrangement that existed prior to 2003, with police institutions on one side and the prison system on the other. Johnson Title of thesis:"We're from the favela but we're not favelados: Race, space and violence in northeastern Brazil Abstract The title-page should be followed by an abstract consisting of no more than 300 words. A copy of the abstract should be given below. This is required for publication in the ASLIB Index of Theses. In Salvador da Bahia's high crime/violence peripheral neighbourhoods, black youth are perceived as criminals levying high social costs as they attempt to acquire employment, enter university, or political processes. Low-income youth must overcome the reality of violence while simultaneously confronting the support, privileged urban classes have for stricter law enforcement and the clandestine acts of death squads. As youth from these neighbourhoods begin to develop more complex identities some search for alternative peer groups, social networks and social programmes that will guide them to constructive life choices while others consign themselves to options that are more readily available in their communities. Fast money and the ability to participate in the global economy beyond ‘passive’ engagement draws some youth into crime yet the majority choose other paths. Yet, the majority use their own identities to build constructive and positive lives and avoid involvement with gangs and other violent social groups. Drawing from Brazil's racial debates started by Gilberto Freyre, findings from this research suggest that while identity construction around race is ambiguous, specific markers highlight one's identity making it difficult to escape negative associations with criminality and violence.
