The A13 Riverside Tunnel Road to Regeneration The tunnel is essential to East London and Thames Gateway’s economic success The A13 Riverside Tunnel Road to Regeneration Thank you for taking the trouble to find out more about the proposed A13 Riverside Tunnel. The tunnelling of a 1.3km stretch of the A13 will not only improve traffic flow along this key route, mitigating the two notorious bottlenecks at the Lodge Avenue and Renwick Road junctions, but will also transform a severely blighted area. As well as creating a new neighbourhood of over 5,000 homes called Castle Green, the tunnel will act as a catalyst for the building of another 28,300 homes in London Riverside, while creating over 1,200 jobs and unlocking significant business and commercial growth in the surrounding area. The tunnel is essential to east London and the Thames Gateway’s economic success and will stimulate growth along its route as well as easing congestion. It also signifies a new way of working in this country adapted from successful models from other European cities. A large proportion of the scheme could be self-financing, with the majority of the funding being generated by the tunnel itself, through the land value uplift and sale of the homes, the community infrastructure levy and new homes bonus. If the government also supports our proposal for stamp duty devolution in Castle Green, then this would mean further significant funding for the scheme could be secured. In many respects it resembles some of the earlier major projects of British town planning like the Milton Keynes generation of new towns or the London's Docklands development. Like them, it may come to be regarded by some as a great achievement of public policy and by others as a great disaster. The fact that positive and negative views can be taken of the same project does not (or does not merely) reflect alternative subjective perspectives: it stems from the fact that there are real conflicts in the society and thus different criteria for judging success. The Thames Gateway project poses daunting choices for those with the power to decide on the future development of South East England. Government and the Mayor of London both agree that much of the wider South East's growth should be concentrated in the Thames estuary (DCMS 2006; Mayor of London 2004). They share the intention that London will expand to the East, not to the West, and that the rationality of capitalist growth is the unquestionable way forward. This chapter explores aspects of this supposed rationality, arguing that the aspirations of 'sustainability' and 'community' cannot be achieved in the neo-liberal framework which is on offer. -

Competition, Cooperation, Co-opetition. A conceptualization of the ‘Network Brand’ Cecilia Pasquinelli Istituto di Management, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna Abstract - Place branding relies on the assumption of inter-territorial competition which seems to be the overall approach to place management. Competition involves not only cities but also provinces, nations, states, villages and supra-national regions. However, there is room for sustaining that competition is not an exhaustive key for understanding regional development and, consequently, for interpreting place marketing and branding. Within the general frame of competition, regions and local areas may seek inter- territorial cooperation in order to enrich their offer and enhance their competitiveness. In this regard, a gap in place branding and marketing literature is identified and this paper contributes to filling it, by proposing a conceptualization of the “network brand”. Assuming cooperation/co-opetition as a way to face inter-territorial competition, this research is in charge of answering to the following research questions. Firstly, to what extent network and network brand building is a pragmatic process i.e. inspired by market principles, rather than being a political process i.e. highly related to power game emerging within and among the involved territories? Secondly, to what extent the network brand is a “post-modern” brand? A secondary research was carried out by reviewing 12 inter-territorial networking experiences in Europe and US. Concerning the first research question, evidence suggests that, beyond a surface of pragmatism, there might be a political process leading to the emergence of a network brand. Moreover, there is a chance that in some cases a pragmatic approach to networking tends to turn into a political process by means of institutional spillovers, turning the network into a political arena. -

World War Two memories Short accounts of the wartime experiences of individual Radley residents and memories of life on the home front in the village Compiled by Christine Wootton Published on the Club website in 2020 to mark the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War Two Party to celebrate VJ Day in August 1946 Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) was on 8 August 1945. It's likely the party shown in the photograph above was held in Lower Radley in a field next to the railway line opposite the old village hall. Club member Rita Ford remembers a party held there with the little ones in fancy dress, including Winston Churchill and wife, a soldier and a Spitfire. The photograph fits this description. It's possible the party was one of a series held after 1945 until well into the 1950s to celebrate VE Day and similar events, and so the date of 1946 handwritten on the photograph may indeed be correct. www.radleyhistoryclub.org.uk ABOUT THE PROJECT These accounts prepared by Club member and past chairman, Christine Wootton, have two main sources: • recordings from Radley History Club’s extensive oral history collection • material acquired by Christine during research on other topics. Below Christine explains how the project came about. Some years ago Radley resident, Bill Small, gave a talk at the Radley Retirement Group about his time as a prisoner of war. He was captured in May 1940 at Dunkirk and the 80th anniversary reminded me that I had a transcript of his talk. I felt that it would be good to share his experiences with the wider community and this set me off thinking that it would be useful to record, in an easily accessible form, the wartime experiences of more Radley people. -

CBA's recurrent editorial theme is the parlous financial state of President, Professor Rosemary Cramp, and Director, Henry CBA IX and the likelihood that SMA would have to cease Cleere also attended. As many of you will know Henry publication. Previous corrunittees battled on and continued Cleere retires this year so I would like to take this to produce this valuable series. It is therefore gratifying to opportunity of wishing him well for the future and to thank note that SMA has been singled out as a model example in him for his many years of service. -

POST MEDIEVAL AND MODERN (INDUSTRIAL, MILITARY, INSTITUTIONS AND DESIGNED LANDSCAPES) HAMPSHIRE AND BERKSHIRE David Hopkins November 2006 Introduction Hampshire. Hampshire is dominated by the chalk landscape which runs in a broad belt, east west, across the middle of the county. The northern edge runs through Pilot Hill and Basingstoke, the southern edge through Kings Somborne and Horndean. These are large, open and fertile landscapes dominated by agriculture. Agriculture is the principle force behind the character of the landscape and the evolution of the transport network and such industry as exists. There are large vistas, with nucleated villages, isolated farms and large extents of formal enclosure. Market towns developed linked by transport routes. Small scale processing using the water power available from streams was supported by, and eventually replaced by, growing industrialisation in some towns, usually those where modern transport (such as rail) allowed development. These towns expanded and changed in character, whilst other less well placed towns continue to retain their market town character. North and south of the chalk are bands of tertiary deposits, sands, gravels and clays. Less fertile and less easy to farm for much of their history they have been dominated by Royal Forest. Their release from forest and small scale nature of the agricultural development has lead to a medieval landscape, with dispersed settlement and common edge settlement with frequent small scale isolated farms. The geology does provide opportunities for extractive industry, and the cheapness of the land, and in the north the proximity to London, led to the establishment of military training areas, and parks and gardens developed by London’s new wealthy classes. -

Crowdy, ‘Medway’s Island Forts ’ P.MacDougal ‘ Victorian Sources Forts of the Medway’ RCHME survey report History and Description In R.A./R.E. Works report no.107, dated 1890 in connection with the re-arming of Grain Fort it is stated that Grain Wing Battery is under construction. As this report deals with the then current experiments with searchlights it would appear that the new battery was to supplement the guns at Grain and Garrison Point Fort, in connection with the new strategies being worked out for the defence of booms and minefields during the hours of darkness. The battery was situated to the south of Grain Fort on a gradual slope towards the sea. Its armament consisted of two 4.7-inch QF guns to provide defence against fast moving destroyers and torpedo boats and a pair of 11-inch RMLs for use against heavier vessels. These emplacements formed a line along the east facing seaward side of the battery. The R.M.L.s occupied the northern half with the Q.F.s to the south. -

Medway Heritage Asset Review 2017 Final Draft: November 2017 Executive Summary The Medway Heritage Asset Review intends to provide a comprehensive overview of the heritage assets in Medway in order to inform the development of a Heritage Strategy to support the emerging Medway Local Plan 2015. Medway benefits from a rich heritage spanning millennia, underpinning the local distinctiveness and creating a unique and special character that can be readily interpreted through the historic environment. The main report is broken down into sections, initially looking at the topography of Medway and how this influenced human settlement in the area, then looking at the development of the key settlements in Medway; taking into consideration the key drivers for their establishment and identifying existing heritage assets. Furthermore, the main influences to development in the area are also considered; including Chatham Dockyard and the military, the brick, cement and lime industry, agriculture, maritime and religion. Through investigating Medway’s history both geographically and thematically, the significance of heritage assets and the importance of historic landscapes can be readily identified; enabling a better understanding and providing opportunities to enhance their enjoyment. Non-designated heritage assets are also identified using a broad range of sources; providing a deeper knowledge of what shapes the distinct local character experienced in Medway and the how this identity is of great importance to the local community. The report concludes with suggestions for additional areas of research and identifies themes to be considered to inform the development of a coherent and robust Heritage Strategy that will help enhance, understand and celebrate Medway’s heritage for years to come.
