Taking place in the yearthe story follows a group of astronauts on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun. The director cast a group of international actors for the Sunshine, and had the actors live together and learn about Sunshine related to their roles, as a form of method acting. Theatrically, it was commercially distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictureswhile the Sunshine Century Fox Home Entertainment division released the film in the video rental market. Sunshine explores physics, science and Sunshine. Previous science fiction films that Boyle cited as influences included Stanley Kubrick 's film A Space Odyssey Sunshine, Andrei Tarkovsky 's film Solarisand Ridley Scott 's science-fiction horror Sunshine Alien. Widescreen DVD and Blu-ray Sunshine of the film, also including the hi-definition Sunshine trailer, scene selections, and director's commentary among other highlights, were released in the United States on 8 January Inthe Sun is dying and Earth is freezing. Eight international astronauts pilot a colossal stellar bomb aboard the spaceship Icarus IIwith the intent to jump-start the Sun, and return to Earth. As they slingshot past Mercury, Icarus II discovers the distress beacon of Icarus Ithe first ship to attempt a similar mission, which disappeared seven years earlier. Reasoning that two payloads Sunshine a better chance of success than one, physicist Capa recommends Captain Kaneda change course and commandeer Icarus I. Mace, the ship's engineer, opposes the deviation as risky. Navigator Trey calculates and implements a trajectory to intercept Icarus Ibut forgets to realign the Sunshine that protect the ship from the sun, causing damage to four shield panels. Kaneda Sunshine Capa embark on a spacewalk to make repairs, assisted by pilot Cassie, who angles the damaged portion of the shield away from Sunshine Sun. As expected, this allows the Sun to destroy the protruding communications tower; however, reflected light also destroys the ship's oxygen garden and oxygen reserves. As Icarus II ' s autopilot returns the shield to its original alignment, Kaneda orders Capa to safety, and Kaneda repairs the last panel, moments before he is immolated. Trey blames himself for the Sunshine of Kaneda, and psychiatrist Searle assesses him as a suicide risk, sedating him. Icarus II docks with Icarus I. They discover Icarus I ' s mainframe has been sabotaged, making its Sunshine delivery impossible. In Sunshine ship's log is a rambling Sunshine from Captain Pinbacker, who abandoned his mission. The crew of Icarus I is Sunshine charred to death in the solar observation room, where they were long ago exposed to the Sunshine Sun. Suddenly, the two ships explosively decouple, destroying Icarus I ' s outer airlock, stranding the four crew members Sunshine it. With only one spacesuit, Mace suggests that Capa wear it Sunshine the rest of them wrap themselves Sunshine salvaged insulation material and then jettison between Sunshine, using the vacuum release for propulsion. When Capa investigates, he Sunshine an insane and disfigured Pinbacker. Pinbacker attacks Sunshine wounds Capa and locks him in an airlock. He then kills Corazon and removes the mainframe from its coolant bath, shutting down the computer. Sunshine then pursues Cassie. Mace attempts to manually lower the computer back into the freezing coolant, but when his leg catches on the descending computer he becomes trapped, and the computer is disabled. As he freezes Sunshine death, he begs Capa to complete the mission. Capa blows the airlock, separates the bomb from the ship, which explodes, and enters the payload, where he finds Cassie. Pinbacker ambushes them, Sunshine them God ordered him to send all humanity to Heaven. As they hurtle into the Sun, Capa escapes Pinbacker, reaching the bomb controls. Unsure if it will work under these extreme conditions, he watches as the bomb begins to successfully Sunshine at the edge of the Sun itself. As time and space distort, Capa blissfully reaches out and touches the surface of the Sun. Back on the frozen Sydney HarbourCapa's sister witnesses the Sun returning Sunshine its full power. In Marchfollowing the completion of Millions[24] director Danny Boyle was briefly attached to direct Degreesa Warner Bros. Opposition from surviving victims and firefighters prevented the project from entering production. Producer Andrew Macdonaldworking with Boyle and Garland, pitched the script to 20th Century Foxwho were reluctant to finance the film based on its similarities to Sunshine remake Solariswhich performed dismally for the studio. The project was instead financed by Fox's specialised film unit Fox Searchlight Pictures. Boyle and Garland worked on the script for a year, spent a second year preparing for Sunshine, filmed for three months, and spent a third full year editing and completing visual effects for Sunshine. Director Sunshine Boyle chose to have an ensemble cast for Sunshine to encourage a more democratic process, similar Sunshine the ensemble cast in Alien. Boyle also chose to have the cast be international in order to reflect the mission's purpose "on behalf of all mankind". To prepare the international actors for the film, Boyle had the cast undergo method acting. Screenwriter Alex Garland was inspired to write Sunshine based on scientific ideas about the heat death of the universe Sunshine, [37] specifically "an article projecting the future of mankind from a physics-based, atheist perspective", according to Garland. Boyle also considered the story of Sunshine as a counterintuitive approach for the contemporary issue of global warmingwith the death of the Sun Sunshine a threat. Boyle described the Sun as a godlike personality in the film, creating a Sunshine dimension for the astronauts due to its scale and power. The story was also written in part to reflect the brilliance and "necessary arrogance" of real life science when the world's scientists are presented with Sunshine crisis that threatens Earth. Sunshine advisers, futuristsand people who developed products for the future were consulted to shape an idea of the Sunshine. To shape the science of the film, Boyle and Garland hired scientific advisers, Sunshine NASA employees and astrophysicists. In the film's backstory, a Q-ball enters and is caught in the Earth's Sun, and begins to eat it away. According Sunshine Cox, the Sun would not be dense enough in real life to stop a Q-ball, but filmmakers took creative licence in writing the backstory. He also dismissed criticisms of the film by scientists: " Sunshine is not a documentary. Sunshine trying to just, in an Sunshine and forty minutes, get across a feeling of what it's like — not only to be a scientist, because obviously there's much more in it than that. So, I found it interesting to watch the kind of people Sunshine get upset because the gravity is wrong. Filming for Sunshine took place at 3 Mills Studios in east London. An elaborate set Sunshine constructed, containing eight stages, 17 sets, and detailed models. The filmmakers employed three film units. To increase the feeling of claustrophobia in SunshineBoyle refused to cut back to scenes on Earth, a traditional technique in most films about the planet in jeopardy.

    Everyday Fascism in Contemporary Japan Etsko Kasai Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2013 ©2013 Etsko Kasai All rights reserved Abstract Everyday Fascism in Contemporary Japan Etsko Kasai This dissertation uses the concept of fascism in order to examine the socio-culture of contemporary Japan. Defined in terms of its commodity structure, fascism turns out to be a relevant concept to Japan not only prior to and during the Asia-Pacific War (1931-1945) but also from the postwar days to date. Against various forms of culturalism that claim that the country is essentially totalitarian and its culture is innately violent, I will argue that the country has shared fascist conditions with those other countries and regions that operate in the mode of mechanical reproduction. While the overall mode of mass-reproduction has been further articulated by different moments, such as late capitalism or post-modernism, the cultural and political condition of reducing singular lives and events into standardized forms has continued in these countries and regions roughly since the 1920s. My view will expand the horizon of studies of fascism, which has hitherto been limited to Europe between the two World Wars. At the same time, the view of fascism’s generality should not be blind to local inflections and historical specificities. In this dissertation, I will examine such trans-war Japanese institutions as the ideologies of emperorship, formation of the petty bourgeois class, and corporatist organizations of gender and locality.

When you started I felt so fascinated, I thought it best if you continue, complete the lecture. I would like to pick up from where Nancy left. I suppose some of you have heard me before. How many of you have heard me speak before? (Pause) Thank you. How many of you never heard me before? (Pause) Thank you. How many are not sure? (Laughter) There is bright sunshine outside, and its nice weather as we drove from the Twin Cities to Rochester in bright sunshine. I was contemplating on the bright sunshine outside and bright sunshine inside and I said, where are the shadows? There is bright sunshine outside. There is bright sunshine inside. Where are the shadows? And, how, if we don't have shadows, would there still be bright sunshine? What makes that sunshine sunshine at all? Is there any truth that, but for darkness, we would not only not have light, we would not comprehend light? That light exists because of an experience of darkness. Not only that we divide darkness from light, but ifthere was no personal physical experience of darkness, there could be no personal physical experience of light. I have suggested many times that we should contemplate, if there was a certain amount of light always glowing and experienced by us, whether we open our eyes or close our eyes, go to sleep or wake up, if a certain amount of light was always there, never shut off, would we ever experience it? The answer is no.

Some years ago the present writer discovered a small Chinese- Japanese dictionary containing five thousand characters. It was fairly well printed, was portable, in fact just what he wanted, but it was nearly out of print. He was fortunate enough to obtain a dozen copies in an obscure book-shop, and made it a practice to pre- sent a copy to young missionaries of special linguistic promise. One of these books was given to Rev. J. Ira Jones, a student missionary at Fukuoka. When Mr. Jones took up the study of the Chinese characters in earnest, he applied the index principle to the little dictionary. There was nothing original in indexing the side margin with numbers for the sets of radicals from one stroke to seventeen. But the indexing of the lower margin for the radicals themselves, thus subdividing the side indexes, deserves the credit of a new invention.
