Good Afternoon, As many around the globe are about to celebrate the ringing in of the New Year, the citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to fall under the repression of the Kabila regime. Long-delayed presidential elections were delayed yet again late last week when the Democratic Republic of Congo's electoral commission (CENI) announced it was pushing the Dec. 23 election to Dec. 30. And just yesterday, CENI i_ssueq a statement announcing that elections in three cities - with millions of voters and widely considered to.be opposition strongholds - are being JlOSt~ until March 2019. Officials cited the Ebola outbreak and ethnic violence as the reasons for the postponement of the elections in Beni, Butembo, and Yumbi; however it is much more likely that this is just the latest effon by Mr. Kabila to _ensure that his handpicked successor. Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, is installed as the new president. Members of the opposition, including Pierre Lumbi, the campaign director for Martin Fayulu; and Mo"ise Katumbi, former Governor of the katanga province have decried the decision calling it ".11.njustjfiable" and "um1,ccc:ptabl~". Not surprisingly, the reaction from the Congolese people has been swift and urgent. As people have taken to the streets to protest the decision, the regime has responded with characteristic violence. Early this morning, the Guardian re)lorted that security forces had fired live rounds and tear gas (see VIDEO here) to disperse demonstrators who were protesting against their exclusion from Sunday's presidential election: "Giscard Yere, a Beni resident, said: 'There was a group of demonstrators who wanted to enter the CENT office ... to demand the withdrawal of the decision. But the police officers and soldiers who were there fired to disperse the demonstrators.•" The international community must unequivocally denounce this violence and these delays and publically call for elections to be held everywhere across the country on December 30. There can be no more delays in this important election and it is critical the use of electronic voting machines be barred.
