These include using social media for information warfare, recruiting and radicalizing potential terrorists or collecting data and information about users for purposes they have not consented to. The demand for an ethical discussion of social media policy at the national level is growing, and this study seeks to address that challenge. The study is an exploration of applied ethics in the context of information and technology policy. It addresses issues in information, media and technology ethics, applying a specific ethical theory to three cases. These three cases consist of Russian, Chinese and U.S. policies that relate to social media in a national information security or cybersecurity context, and which exist within the information and technology policy ii categories. Each of these three cases represent a specific type of social media policy. The Russia case is an offensive social media strategy within foreign policy, the China case is a broad, domestic social media policy and the U.S. policy is a very narrow social media policy within the larger, national security domain that has substantial consequences for privacy and freedom rights nonetheless. First, the case policies are analyzed through Schön and Rein’s frame-critical policy analysis method, which deconstructs the policy and adds to it the historical and cultural backgrounds that lends a broader perspective to the policy, and thereby, a more thorough understanding of its intended purpose and expected outcomes. Second, the now much more broadly unfolded policies are analyzed through the lens of political philosopher John Rawls’ theories of justice and fairness to ascertain their compliance with Rawls’ deontological ethics. Through this applied exercise, the validity of Rawlsian deontology as an ethical compass for information and technology policy is established. The findings are finally crystallized into an ethics test, The Rawls Test for social media policy. iii The dissertation of Morten Bay Christensen is approved.     PHILOSOPHY COURSE OFFERINGS – SPRING 2019 – 200-level Courses (Tier Two) PHIL 272: Metaphysics | Andrew Cutrofello In Plato’s Phaedo, Socrates suggests that physics—the study of the physical world—can only tell us so much. There are things that physics cannot tell us about, such as the nature of justice or whether we have immortal souls. These topics belong to what we now call metaphysics. The prefix “meta-“ means “after” or “beyond.” Traditionally, it was the job of poets to deal with metaphysical topics. One of Plato’s goals is to explain the difference between poetic and philosophical approaches to metaphysical topics, while maintaining the difference between metaphysics and physics. Ever since, philosophers have struggled to articulate the relationship between physics, metaphysics, and poetry. Some have argued that as physics has become more sophisticated, it has swallowed up metaphysics. Others have argued that all metaphysics – even that of Plato – is just a kind of poetry. Still others have followed Plato in trying to carve out a special domain for metaphysics. In this class we survey various approaches to this problem. We will begin with Plato and then move on to Immanuel Kant, Kitaro Nishida, Susan Howe (a poet, writing about the philosopher Charles Peirce), and Werner Heisenberg (a physicist, writing about the relationship between physics and metaphysics). PHIL 274: Logic | Harry Gensler This course aims to promote reasoning skills, especially the ability to recognize valid reasoning. We'll study syllogistic, propositional, modal, and basic quantificational logic. We'll use these to analyze hundreds of arguments, many on philosophical topics like morality, free will, and the existence of God.

    Applying virtue ethics to business: The agent-based approach By: John Dobson It ca be argued that the presence of what are in a slightly old-fashioned terminology called virtues in fact plays a significant role in the operation of the economic system. - Kenneth Arrow Introduction There are two basic approaches to integrating ethics in business: the action-based approach, and the agent-based approach. The traditional approach is action-based in that it focusses on developing rules or guidelines to constrain management's actions. These rules or guidelines generally manifest themselves in corporate codes-of-conduct, or codes-of-ethics. Contrarily, rather than the action-based focus on rules governing action, the agent-based approach concerns the fundamental character and motivations of the individual agent. Under the agent-based approach, moral behavior is not limited to adherence to a rule or guideline but rather involves the individual rationally pursuing moral excellence as a goal in and of itself. In essence, ethics becomes central to the rationality concept as an objective rather than a constraint: "something positively good, ..something to be sought after" (Ladd, 1991, p. 82). Agent-based approaches generally derive their philosophical foundation from virtue-ethics theory. This theory is attracting increasing interest from business ethicists. In essence, the 'virtue' in virtue-ethics is defined as some desirable character trait, such as courage, that lies between two extremes, such as rashness and cowardice. Thus the 'virtuous' agent is involved in a continual quest to find balance in decision-making. Such an agent does not apply any specific 'rules' in making decisions, but rather attempts to make decisions that are consistent with the pursuit of a particular kind of excellence that in turn entails exercising sound moral judgement guided by such 'virtues' as courage, wisdom, temperance, fairness, integrity, and consistency.
