The Day Solis Came to School

A day that students, teachers and the administration will always remember is when Bishop paid a visit to J.E. Cosgriff School. Here is how that magnificent day unfolded.

First, Bishop Solis celebrated Mass with our very own Fr. Andrzej, assisted by Deacon George Reade, Fr. Rowland Nwokocha, and Luis De-Dios. In his homily, Bishop Solis asked the students to pray for him, help others, and to be hopeful and positive.

Second, Bishop Solis paid a visit to J.E. Cosgriff School. He took time to visit every classroom from kindergarten through eighth grade. The students were captivated by his questions and comments regarding the subject they were studying and his straightforward, sometimes humorous pitch regarding a “vocation.” Bishop Solis was genuinely interested in what students were learning in the classroom. He sat down to discuss a literature, history, and Latin lesson to name a few.

The Student Council presented Bishop Solis with a “Welcome to Utah” basket of gifts from the school. He acknowledged that a snow scraper, gloves, wool hat, and Bear Lake jam would come in handy. Also included in the basket was essential University of Utah sportswear. He immediately took out the U of U baseball cap and wore it for the rest of his school visit.

The students and teachers welcomed Bishop Solis with open arms. It was a positive and exciting visit because faculty, staff and students had a chance to meet, interact and laugh with this kind and personable new Bishop of Utah. We hope he will visit again soon!

Father Andrzej—Leadership and Kindness during the 2016-17 School Year

J.E. Cosgriff administration, faculty and staff are deeply grateful for a successful and productive year with our many wonderful students, toddler through eighth grade.

A special word of gratitude goes to Fr. Andrzej for his leadership with weekly Masses, Sacrament preparation, Youth Group formation, parent religious education, and faith formation on all grade levels. Also, much appreciation for his cheerful presence at many school activities and events. Fr. Andrzej wears many hats as Pastor of St. Ambrose Church. At J.E. Cosgriff School, he works tirelessly to meet and become friends with students and parents. He also offers love and support to families during sad and difficult times. We are all very blessed to have Fr. Andrzej’s guidance as our religious leader and pastor of St. Ambrose Parish. Fr. Andrzej, thank you for another great year!

The eager group of young people were busy with the following service projects the six times they met during the school year. They raked leaves for seniors in the neighborhood, and tied lap quilts and crafted note bags for seniors in a retirement home. They also wrote inspiring quotes to hang up in J.E. Cosgriff classrooms, the rectory and their own homes.

The next Youth Group meeting is planned for Sunday, September 24, starting with 5:00pm Mass.

8th Grade Gift

Cosgriff eighth grade students spent several weeks reading and studying Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Learning about life through the eyes of the novel’s narrator, Scout Finch, as she and her brother Jem navigate Maycomb, Alabama, during the segregated 1930’s, proved to the 8th grade that although things in this world change, many stay the same. One similarity is the heartfelt advice given by Atticus Finch to his two children, “...you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.” Atticus’s profound words provided an opportunity for many class discussions.

The characters, setting and themes made a real impact on the students this year. When it came time to decide on a class gift, they were in agreement that giving set of hardbound “Mockingbird” books to the school would be the best way to pass their love of Lee’s story to future classes of Cosgriff eighth grade students.

Thank you parents for your generous donations that made the purchase of forty-two books possible.

Class Reunion

J.E. Cosgriff School was the venue for an impromptu class reunion for ten former students from the eighth grade graduating class of 1976. Mrs. Carolyn Schubach was contacted by Andy Cier, her former student in 1976, and soon plans were made for an informal get-together. On July 16, these true blue “Cosgriff Tigers” arrived at school. Some came from out of town while others resided in . There was much laughter and reminiscing as the group toured the school with Mrs. Hunt, Principal. Anthony Oliver commented “the clocks on the walls were the only thing the same as years ago.” Deep rooted connections, good friends and fond memories were the common factors that drew this jovial group together.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST performed by the J.E. Cosgriff School Drama Club

The J.E. Cosgriff Drama Club under the direction of Mrs. Suzanne Lacombe presented the heartwarming musical of “Beauty and the Beast” in the spring of 2017. This timeless Broadway classic entertained toddlers to grandparents with singing, dancing, bright costumes and an original classic setting. The talented Drama Club cast included fifth through eighth grade students with a few fourth grade additions this year.

In addition to Mrs. Lacombe’s excellent directing, several parents played a key role to bring the play to life. Michelle McDonough worked behind the scenes with sets, props and Beauty and the Beast Cast actors. Holly Isaac wowed the audience with her amazing dance choreography. Tiffany Wharton, Claire Donnelly, and Patricia Nord designed, sewed and assembled a professional collection of costumes for all students acting in the play. Christopher Huntzinger kindly rehearsed with students on several vocal lines and songs.

The cast enthusiastically presented four performances of “Beauty and the Beast.” The J.E. Cosgriff community will long remember this outstanding Broadway musical. A special word of thanks to Mrs. Lacombe for her extra effort and devotion to the “Arts.”

The administration, faculty, staff, students, and parents are always so grateful to Mr. Terry Stephens for his generous donation each year to build, strengthen and support all areas of the arts (painting, violin, band/orchestra, dance, singing, drama) at J.E. Cosgriff School.

William Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT performed by the J.E. Cosgriff School 8th Grade Class

Cosgriff’s eighth grade class certainly did “play on,” in their production of “Twelfth Night” on February 23 and 24, 2017. Thirty- six students, under the direction of Mrs. Kori Hazel, spent several weeks learning about Shakespeare and Elizabethan theater, his characters, their lines, how to incorporate wit and humor, blocking, choreography, costuming, and music. The result was a resounding success! Mrs. Hazel took the time to help students really understand and act Shakespeare’s lines. The more comfortable students became with their character, the more they enjoyed themselves on stage. Students showed up for each rehearsal ready to work and help others. Mrs. Hazel’s famous mantra: “Kindness and love, folks; kindness and love,” set the tone and climate of the rehearsals.

Thank you Mrs. Hazel! The eighth grade appreciates all you did to help make the production memorable, educational and enjoyable.

A sincere thank you to Mrs. Claire Donnelly for designing and making additional costumes, and Ann Owsley for the set design, construction, and painting.

Danielle Byron Henry Migraine Foundation

The J.E. Cosgriff School community greatly supports the Danielle Byron Henry Migraine Foundation. Much admiration goes to Dr. Dan Henry. He has worked tirelessly to ease and hopefully eliminate the symptoms and pain caused by migraine disease in children and adults. The Cosgriff community greatly admires Dr. Henry and his wife, Diane for recently starting “headache school” and support groups for young people and adults.

An ambitious and necessary goal of the Foundation is to educate primary care physicians to recognize early onset of migraines and begin treatment to prevent progression of the disease. A special word of thanks to Dr. Henry for treating a few faculty members, students and parents in the Cosgriff community who suffer from migraine disease.

The Danielle Byron Henry Foundation is accepting donations for research, treatment, classes and education. To find out more about this foundation go to daniellefoundation.org. Many of us knew and loved Danielle Henry. She attended J.E. Cosgriff School for nine years and was a graduate of the class of 1995. Best of luck to the Henry family (Dan, Diane, Elizabeth) who work diligently and with much determination every day in the name of their loving daughter/sister, Danielle to find relief and a cure for migraine disease.
