John Higgins Our Regional Bishop (Auxiliary Bishop appointed for the San Pedro Region) Bishop Oscar Solis has been called to serve as The Ordinary Bishop of Salt Lake City Utah. We congratulate him and pray that his ministry grows as a light shining in darkness. He has been very kind to the people that he has served as Bishop here. We do not know yet who will replace him. We’ll receive word from the Archdiocese when this happens. So, what is the difference between an Auxiliary Bishop and an Ordinary Bishop? An Ordinary Bishop has his own diocese. An Auxiliary Bishop does not have his own diocese, but works as a representative for the Bishop of the Diocese. Our Ordinary Bishop is Archbishop José Gomez. What is the difference between a Bishop and an Archbishop? An Archbishop is the Bishop of an Archdiocese, which is usually larger in population and probably older than a Dio- cese. Archbishop Gomez replaced Cardinal Mahony as the Archbishop of Los Angeles. What is the difference between a Cardinal and a Bishop? A Cardinal can vote in the selection of a Pope. And one does not have to be an Archbishop, a Bishop, or even a Priest to be a Cardinal. One of the most famous Cardinals in U.S. History was Cardinal Avery Dulles, who was a Jesu- it Priest, and not a Bishop. There have been Deacons and Lay Persons in the Church who were Cardinals in history. For awhile the Mayor of Rome was made a Cardinal. Here at St. Raymond we have four priests. One is a Pastor (me) one is the Associate Pastor (Fr. Paul) and Fr. Ambrose and Fr. Khumbah are both in Residence, one working at St. Francis Hospital and one working at St. Pius St. Matthias Academy and working on his Master’s De- gree at Loyola Marymount University. None of us have the title of “Monsignor”, which is an honorary title, and is kind of an honorary Bishop, but not a real Bishop. Fr. Paul and Fr. Am- brose are in an order called “Discalced Carmelites”, Fr. Khumbah and I are diocesan priests. He belongs to his diocese in Cameroon; I belong to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. When someone asks me what order I am in I laughingly say “I am a disordered Priest”. There are Deacons and some people talk about Deaconesses, but in history the Deaconesses were the wives of Deacons and not themselves ordained. All of the above are called “Clergy” or “Clerics” in the Church. There are also Sisters, Nuns, Brothers and Monks. Each of those is a little different from the other too. Sisters and Brothers work, usually, in a public institution as nurses, administrators,

    The Day Bishop Solis Came to School A day that students, teachers and the administration will always remember is when Bishop Oscar Solis paid a visit to J.E. Cosgriff School. Here is how that magnificent day unfolded. First, Bishop Solis celebrated Mass with our very own Fr. Andrzej, assisted by Deacon George Reade, Fr. Rowland Nwokocha, and Luis De-Dios. In his homily, Bishop Solis asked the students to pray for him, help others, and to be hopeful and positive. Second, Bishop Solis paid a visit to J.E. Cosgriff School. He took time to visit every classroom from kindergarten through eighth grade. The students were captivated by his questions and comments regarding the subject they were studying and his straightforward, sometimes humorous pitch regarding a “vocation.” Bishop Solis was genuinely interested in what students were learning in the classroom. He sat down to discuss a literature, history, and Latin lesson to name a few. The Student Council presented Bishop Solis with a “Welcome to Utah” basket of gifts from the school. He acknowledged that a snow scraper, gloves, wool hat, and Bear Lake jam would come in handy. Also included in the basket was essential University of Utah sportswear. He immediately took out the U of U baseball cap and wore it for the rest of his school visit. The students and teachers welcomed Bishop Solis with open arms. It was a positive and exciting visit because faculty, staff and students had a chance to meet, interact and laugh with this kind and personable new Bishop of Utah.

    Filipino Priests’ Assembly: ‘A much awaited moment’ A time to celebrate their gifts, singing and dancing among them; to hear how they can contribute to the new evangelization in the United States; and to gather in a new organization. “Historic” was the word used by Filipino priests to describe their First National Assembly held Nov. 8-11 in Los Angeles, which included an opening Mass followed by a day of workshops on spiritual growth and pastoral enrichment, a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, a priests’ concert and the election of a new leadership council. It was five years ago when Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis — the first Filipino bishop in the United States, and episcopal moderator for Filipino priests in the U.S. — had the idea to gather all the Filipino priests in the country to address common concerns, challenges and contributions they can make to the Catholic Church in America. But it was not until 2008, Bishop Solis said, that 24 priests gathered in Orlando, Florida, and committed to start the process of identifying their fellow priests nationwide. That meeting led to the creation of a steering committee that since then has been working arduously, contacting each of the 900 Filipino priests working in the U.S. and the Virgin Islands. “This is a dream come true,” Bishop Solis told The Tidings. “We’ve been trying to find a way which we can provide a venue for Filipino priests serving the local Church in the United States to gather. So this is a much awaited moment.” As Archbishop José Gomez told the priests in his welcoming remarks, there could not be a better place to celebrate the assembly than Los Angeles, “the second largest Filipino city in the world, after Manila.” The event was held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the U.S.

Robert received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in November 1984, an experience with the presence and power of the Holy Spirit which changed his life totally. On December 8, 1984, he received prophecies or messages from the Lord about his future involvement in worldwide ministries of preaching, teaching, and healing. In March 1985, he was asked to assume the role of a servant leader for the Children of God Prayer Community, St. Luke's Parish, Stockton, Ca., a role which he still holds. In 1989, the prayer community started a monthly Mass and Healing Service which is still going strong to this day. In 1996, the Alliance of Filipino Catholic Charismatic Prayer Communities in North America was formed and elected "Brother Bob"(as he is fondly called by friends and associates) as the National Coordinator. In 2006, he was elected as a Council Member of the Vatican-based International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) to represent the English speaking North America, Central America, and Caribbean countries starting in 2007. He is one of the 14 Council Members representing all the continents of the world to serve the worldwide Renewal through ICCRS and they meet at least once a year in the Vatican . He is also a member of the Association of Christian Therapists and the Filipino Pastoral Council of the Stockton Diocese. Brother Bob has spoken at various regional, national and international conferences and conventions and has conducted retreats, seminars, Days of Renewal, Healing Rallies and Crusades not only in North America but also in Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia , Latin America, and the Middle East .
