Between 1964 and 1965 he was a teacher of literature and psychology at Inmaculada High School in the province of Santa Fe, and in 1966 he taught the same courses at the prestigious Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. In 1967, he returned to his theological studies and was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969. After his perpetual profession as a Jesuit in 1973, he became master of novices at the Seminary of Villa Barilari in San Miguel. Later that same year, he was elected superior of the Jesuit province of Argentina and Uruguay. In 1980, he returned to San Miguel as a teacher at the Jesuit school, a job rarely taken by a former provincial superior.

    The Day Bishop Solis Came to School A day that students, teachers and the administration will always remember is when Bishop Oscar Solis paid a visit to J.E. Cosgriff School. Here is how that magnificent day unfolded. First, Bishop Solis celebrated Mass with our very own Fr. Andrzej, assisted by Deacon George Reade, Fr. Rowland Nwokocha, and Luis De-Dios. In his homily, Bishop Solis asked the students to pray for him, help others, and to be hopeful and positive. Second, Bishop Solis paid a visit to J.E. Cosgriff School. He took time to visit every classroom from kindergarten through eighth grade. The students were captivated by his questions and comments regarding the subject they were studying and his straightforward, sometimes humorous pitch regarding a “vocation.” Bishop Solis was genuinely interested in what students were learning in the classroom. He sat down to discuss a literature, history, and Latin lesson to name a few. The Student Council presented Bishop Solis with a “Welcome to Utah” basket of gifts from the school. He acknowledged that a snow scraper, gloves, wool hat, and Bear Lake jam would come in handy. Also included in the basket was essential University of Utah sportswear. He immediately took out the U of U baseball cap and wore it for the rest of his school visit. The students and teachers welcomed Bishop Solis with open arms. It was a positive and exciting visit because faculty, staff and students had a chance to meet, interact and laugh with this kind and personable new Bishop of Utah.

    Filipino Priests’ Assembly: ‘A much awaited moment’ A time to celebrate their gifts, singing and dancing among them; to hear how they can contribute to the new evangelization in the United States; and to gather in a new organization. “Historic” was the word used by Filipino priests to describe their First National Assembly held Nov. 8-11 in Los Angeles, which included an opening Mass followed by a day of workshops on spiritual growth and pastoral enrichment, a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, a priests’ concert and the election of a new leadership council. It was five years ago when Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis — the first Filipino bishop in the United States, and episcopal moderator for Filipino priests in the U.S. — had the idea to gather all the Filipino priests in the country to address common concerns, challenges and contributions they can make to the Catholic Church in America. But it was not until 2008, Bishop Solis said, that 24 priests gathered in Orlando, Florida, and committed to start the process of identifying their fellow priests nationwide. That meeting led to the creation of a steering committee that since then has been working arduously, contacting each of the 900 Filipino priests working in the U.S. and the Virgin Islands. “This is a dream come true,” Bishop Solis told The Tidings. “We’ve been trying to find a way which we can provide a venue for Filipino priests serving the local Church in the United States to gather. So this is a much awaited moment.” As Archbishop José Gomez told the priests in his welcoming remarks, there could not be a better place to celebrate the assembly than Los Angeles, “the second largest Filipino city in the world, after Manila.” The event was held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the U.S.

    Robert Canton was born in Cebu City, Philippines and he came in the United States in 1973 after graduating from College with an Accounting degree. Since1973, he has been residing in Stockton, Ca. with his family. Robert received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in November 1984, an experience with the presence and power of the Holy Spirit which changed his life totally. On December 8, 1984, he received prophecies or messages from the Lord about his future involvement in worldwide ministries of preaching, teaching, and healing. In March 1985, he was asked to assume the role of a servant leader for the Children of God Prayer Community, St. Luke's Parish, Stockton, Ca., a role which he still holds. In 1989, the prayer community started a monthly Mass and Healing Service which is still going strong to this day. In 1996, the Alliance of Filipino Catholic Charismatic Prayer Communities in North America was formed and elected "Brother Bob"(as he is fondly called by friends and associates) as the National Coordinator. In 2006, he was elected as a Council Member of the Vatican-based International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) to represent the English speaking North America, Central America, and Caribbean countries starting in 2007. He is one of the 14 Council Members representing all the continents of the world to serve the worldwide Renewal through ICCRS and they meet at least once a year in the Vatican . He is also a member of the Association of Christian Therapists and the Filipino Pastoral Council of the Stockton Diocese. Brother Bob has spoken at various regional, national and international conferences and conventions and has conducted retreats, seminars, Days of Renewal, Healing Rallies and Crusades not only in North America but also in Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia , Latin America, and the Middle East .

    1 An Unfinished Journey or a Journey Without an End?: Asian American Catholics and Harmony and Interculturality in the American Catholic Church (Extended Summary of Presentation) Gemma Tulud Cruz* According to the 2019 census there were 17.3 million Americans of Asian descent. The largest groups represented are Chinese (3.8 million), Filipinos (3.4. million), Asian Indians (3.2 million), Vietnamese (1.7 million), Koreans (1.7 million), and Japanese (1.3 million). A June 2019 Pew Research Center report says that, based on race and ethnicity, more Asian immigrants than Hispanic immigrants have arrived in the U.S. in most years since 2010. The Center also projects that Asians will become the largest immigrant group in the U.S. by 2055, surpassing Hispanics with estimates indicating that in 2065, Asians will make up some 38% of all immigrants; Hispanics, 31%; whites, 20%; and Blacks, 9%. Though they make up about only three percent of the Catholic population and are concentrated mostly along the West Coast of the United States, the presence of Catholics of Asian descent impacts dioceses throughout the country. As could be surmised from the pastoral statement of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (hereinafter USCCB) in 2001 (Asian and Pacific Presence: Harmony in Faith) and in 2018 (Encountering Christ in Harmony: A Pastoral Response to Our Asian and Pacific Island Brothers and Sisters) one of the difficulties in discerning and responding to the gifts and challenges presented by Asian American Catholics is that the group, which already comprises an extremely diverse constituency of nationalities and ethnicities, is often lumped with Pacific Islanders.
