ADOPTED Jani 4 :Loll RESOLUTION National Electrical Contractors Association Los Angeles County Chapter Whereas, The National Electrical Contractors Association was founded in 1901; and Whereas, The Los Angeles County Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association represents contractors in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties; and Whereas, The National Electrical Contractors Association is the leading representative of a segment of the construction market comprised of over 70,000 electrical firms; and Whereas, The National Electrical Contractors Association employs over 650,000 electrical workers and produces an annual volume of over $95 billion; and Whereas, The National Electrical Contractors Association includes 119 U.S. chapters in addition to others in countries around the world; and Whereas, The National Electrical Contractors Association is dedicated to enhancing the industry through continuing education, labor relations, current information and promotional activities; and Whereas, The National Electrical Contractors Association is the voice of the electrical contracting industry, working to promote higher standards, quality workmanship and training for a skilled workforce: Now, therefore, be it resolved, that by the adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council does hereby congratulate and commend the National Electrical Contractors Association n their 63rd Annual Inaugural Ball and for their efforts and support to the electrical workers in t mdust . Gomez, presiding, together with Bishop Edward Clark, Bishop Alexander Salazar, and Bishop Oscar Solis, Reverend Rodel G. Balagtas, Pastor, Reverend Camilo Pacanza, Assistant Priest, and former pastors, Msgr. Carl Bell and Reverend Henry Hernando and other members of the clergy con-celebrating; and WHEREAS, The Centennial theme is "CeLebrating Our Faith Strengthening Our Relationships, Sharing Our BeLiefs and VaLues as a CathoLic Christian Community'~· and WHEREAS, on August ! 2, I 9 I 0, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church was established as a mission church in the Colgrove district, currently known as East Hollywood, at a meeting attended by Reverend Daniel J. Murphy, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, Reverend William Forde and several parishioners of Blessed Sacrament, with the support of Bishop Thomas J. Conaty, Bishop of Monterey and Los Angeles ( 1903-19 15); and WHEREAS, a church structure was completed in 191 l with a seating capacity for 300 people and in 1922, a parochial school was built, staffed with the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary; and WHEREAS, Bishop Thomas J. Conaty named Reverend Stephen E. Cain { 1912-1922), as the founding pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, succeeded by Reverend James A Martin ( 1922-1938), Reverend John O'Donnell ( 1938-1968), Reverend Monsignor George Cranham ( 1968-1973, Reverend Charles W. Harmon ( 1973-1984), Reverend Monsignor Carl Bell ( 1984-1995); Reverend Henry Hernando ( 1995-2002), and Reverend Radel G. Balagatas, D.Min. (2002-Present}; and WHEREAS, in 1940, a new gothic-style church was constructed to accommodate the rapidly growing parish community with a seating capacity of 700, at a cost of $75,000, and was dedicated on February 21, 1941, by Archbishop John J. Cantwell; and WHEREAS, in 1954, a new parochial school was constructed and on June 14, ! 957, the twin spires were constructed onto the church's roof in dedication to the Blessed Mother; and WHEREAS, in 2008, the parish embarked on a capital campaign program to renovate and restore the church, since its reconstruction in I 941, with a goal of$ I. 9 million; and WHEREAS, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Located in East Hollywood, also known as inner-city Los Angeles, is surrounded by multi-ethnic communities with approximately 2,000 families and 60 active ministries, celebrating eight Masses on Sundays (4-English, 3 Spanish, and I Filipino) and two Masses Monday through Friday, and a Novena Mass honoring Our Mother of Perpetual Help every Wednesday evening; and WHEREAS, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church is a vibrant, active parish, strong in faith, in serving God's people, through various social outreach programs in collaboration with the City of Los Angeles - Council District 13, Hollywood Housing Corporation, and OneLA; and WHEREAS, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church is able to provide a food pantry serving approximately I 00 families per week and to provide resource assistance concerning issues on tenant rights, affordable housing, immigration, safety and security, and health care; and WHEREAS, through the pastorate of Reverend G. Balagtas, D.Min, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church has become a vibrant and leading church in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area: NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council of the City of Los Angeles congratulates Immaculate Heart of Mary Church upon the I 00 Anniversary. January 24, 20 I 2 ADOPTED JAN 2 4_-2012 LOS ANGELES CnY COUNCil Recyclab}a and .mada from tflcyc1ed waste. @ Form 99 CITY OF LOS ANGELES RESOLUTION UCLA Fight against Childhood Obesity Whereas, over the past three decades childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese; and WHEREAS, disparities exist in that nearly 40% of America's African-American and Latino children are overweight or obese and those from medically underserved areas are at greater risk for being overweight and obese; and WHEREAS, in addition to a healthy diet engaging in regular physical activity is widely accepted as an effective preventative measure for a variety of obesity-related chronic diseases; and WHEREAS, schools are through the provision of culturally and developmentally appropriate physical activity programs, have the power to increase physical activity among medically underserved areas; and WHEREAS, research shows students who come from healthy school environments that promote physical activity and nutrition have better academic achievement scores and better health outcomes; and WHEREAS, there is hope in the challenge of childhood obesity, and according to First Lady Obama and the Let's Move Initiative, the hope lies through implementation of programs that are informed by strong partnerships between universities and local communities; and WHEREAS, local leaders in Los Angeles County, know that collaborations that involve researchers, local government and community, is an effective tool they can have in their efforts to reduce the obesity rates in their county; and WHEREAS, through collaboration between Dr. Kynna Wright-Vole! and colleagues from the University of California Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and local community and business partners, an obesity prevention grant entitled "Impact of a CBPR School Program on Obesity-Related Outcomes in Underserved Youth" was created; and WHEREAS, reflective of their commitment to eliminate health disparities and to support the brightest and most promising minority scientists; the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Nursing Research and the Office of Behavior and Social Science funded the grant for $1.2 million dollars; and WHEREAS, funding will provide twenty-four medically underserved middle schools within the LAUSD a coordinated school health program, which includes an evidenced based PE program, professional development training for physical education teachers and provision of quality PE equipment; and NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this Resolution the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does hereby recognize UCLA for their efforts with the fight against childhood obesity and encourages everyone to consider the health and wellbeing of our children throughout the year.     The Day Bishop Solis Came to School A day that students, teachers and the administration will always remember is when Bishop Oscar Solis paid a visit to J.E. Cosgriff School. Here is how that magnificent day unfolded. First, Bishop Solis celebrated Mass with our very own Fr. Andrzej, assisted by Deacon George Reade, Fr. Rowland Nwokocha, and Luis De-Dios. In his homily, Bishop Solis asked the students to pray for him, help others, and to be hopeful and positive. Second, Bishop Solis paid a visit to J.E. Cosgriff School. He took time to visit every classroom from kindergarten through eighth grade. The students were captivated by his questions and comments regarding the subject they were studying and his straightforward, sometimes humorous pitch regarding a “vocation.” Bishop Solis was genuinely interested in what students were learning in the classroom. He sat down to discuss a literature, history, and Latin lesson to name a few. The Student Council presented Bishop Solis with a “Welcome to Utah” basket of gifts from the school. He acknowledged that a snow scraper, gloves, wool hat, and Bear Lake jam would come in handy. Also included in the basket was essential University of Utah sportswear. He immediately took out the U of U baseball cap and wore it for the rest of his school visit. The students and teachers welcomed Bishop Solis with open arms. It was a positive and exciting visit because faculty, staff and students had a chance to meet, interact and laugh with this kind and personable new Bishop of Utah.

    Filipino Priests’ Assembly: ‘A much awaited moment’ A time to celebrate their gifts, singing and dancing among them; to hear how they can contribute to the new evangelization in the United States; and to gather in a new organization. “Historic” was the word used by Filipino priests to describe their First National Assembly held Nov. 8-11 in Los Angeles, which included an opening Mass followed by a day of workshops on spiritual growth and pastoral enrichment, a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, a priests’ concert and the election of a new leadership council. It was five years ago when Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis — the first Filipino bishop in the United States, and episcopal moderator for Filipino priests in the U.S. — had the idea to gather all the Filipino priests in the country to address common concerns, challenges and contributions they can make to the Catholic Church in America. But it was not until 2008, Bishop Solis said, that 24 priests gathered in Orlando, Florida, and committed to start the process of identifying their fellow priests nationwide. That meeting led to the creation of a steering committee that since then has been working arduously, contacting each of the 900 Filipino priests working in the U.S. and the Virgin Islands. “This is a dream come true,” Bishop Solis told The Tidings. “We’ve been trying to find a way which we can provide a venue for Filipino priests serving the local Church in the United States to gather. So this is a much awaited moment.” As Archbishop José Gomez told the priests in his welcoming remarks, there could not be a better place to celebrate the assembly than Los Angeles, “the second largest Filipino city in the world, after Manila.” The event was held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the U.S.

    Robert Canton was born in Cebu City, Philippines and he came in the United States in 1973 after graduating from College with an Accounting degree. Since1973, he has been residing in Stockton, Ca. with his family. Robert received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in November 1984, an experience with the presence and power of the Holy Spirit which changed his life totally. On December 8, 1984, he received prophecies or messages from the Lord about his future involvement in worldwide ministries of preaching, teaching, and healing. In March 1985, he was asked to assume the role of a servant leader for the Children of God Prayer Community, St. Luke's Parish, Stockton, Ca., a role which he still holds. In 1989, the prayer community started a monthly Mass and Healing Service which is still going strong to this day. In 1996, the Alliance of Filipino Catholic Charismatic Prayer Communities in North America was formed and elected "Brother Bob"(as he is fondly called by friends and associates) as the National Coordinator. In 2006, he was elected as a Council Member of the Vatican-based International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) to represent the English speaking North America, Central America, and Caribbean countries starting in 2007. He is one of the 14 Council Members representing all the continents of the world to serve the worldwide Renewal through ICCRS and they meet at least once a year in the Vatican . He is also a member of the Association of Christian Therapists and the Filipino Pastoral Council of the Stockton Diocese. Brother Bob has spoken at various regional, national and international conferences and conventions and has conducted retreats, seminars, Days of Renewal, Healing Rallies and Crusades not only in North America but also in Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia , Latin America, and the Middle East .
