One such pressing issue is immigration. Every day, Catholic Charities helps hundreds of immigrants and refugees who are seeking a better life or fleeing persecution and violence from some of the world’s most impoverished and war-torn countries. While facing the daunting path to citizenship, they also must contend with language barriers and an overwhelming fear that they may not be able to provide the most basic needs for themselves and their families. We remain dedicated to helping immigrants and refugees find peace, stability, and a renewed sense of dignity in their lives. Respect for human rights and dignity, and the preservation of the unity of the family, are cornerstones of Catholic Charities’ work. In the last year, the agency provided help and created hope for individuals and families through food pantries, child care, emergency shelters and transitional housing, services for the elderly, English as a Second Language classes, employment assistance, mentoring for youth, and after school athletics, as well as assistance for immigrants and refugees. Let us commit ourselves to serving the homeless and the elderly, the poor and the hungry, the immigrants and the children, for in serving them, we are serving Christ. I pray that, through the intercession of Our Lady of the Angels, Jesus may grant us the grace to act out of love for God and for our brothers and sisters. May God grant you peace and joy, Most Reverend José H. February 2010 Volume 2, Number 1 Order of the Most Holy Mary Theotokos (Ordo Sanctissimae Theotokos, O.SS.T.) What Lent Means to Me Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. All churches that have a continuous history extending before AD 1500 observe Lent. The ancient church that wrote, collected, canonized, and propagated the New Testament also observed Lent, believing it to be a commandment from the apostles. “Remember that you are dust, and Christians throughout history have found prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to be to dust you shall the building blocks of Lenten spiritual growth. Lenten reflection acknowledges the brokenness of our lives and in our world and encourages us to find return.” repentance through Christ. A Reflection on where God is in our world. In our busy lives it can become easy to think that God doesn’t exist – or that he is not in our lives. It is important for us to slow down and listen for God in our world this Lent. And remember, while Lent is about giving something up, it is also about putting something positive in its place.

Awalt and Rhetts: Images of Nuestra Senora in New Mexico THE IMAGES OF NUESTRA SENORA IN NEW MEXICAN DEVOTIONAL ART: TRADffiONAL AND CONTEMPORARY Barbe Awalt and Paul Rhetts* In New Mexico, the tradition of making santos, images of the saints, has long been revered for its simple yet intense ex pression of the faith. Santos can be found as both statues (called bultos) and as flat paintings on wooden boards (retab los). From its medieval roots in both Spain and Mexico, santo making in New Mexico is as strong a tradition today as it was at its introduction 400 years ago. To understand any long-term tradition in New Mexico, one must ftrst understand some conditions that have made New Mexico different from the rest of the world. Catholicism, though it has had a four-hundred-year tradition in New Mex ico, has also had there some unique expressions of faith not found in the rest of the Catholic world.

  • Statement on Pope Francis' Appointment of Three New Auxiliary
Statement on Pope Francis’ Appointment of Three New Auxiliary Bishops to Serve the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Most Reverend José H. Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels July 21, 2015 Good morning and welcome! ¡Buenos días y bienvenidos! I want to welcome all of you to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. We are joined today by my brother bishops — auxiliary bishops Jerry Wilkerson, Thomas Curry, Oscar Solis and Alexander Salazar. We are also joined today by our retired Cardinal Roger Mahony, who is our Archbishop Emeritus. This morning in Rome, Pope Francis announced that he has accepted the retirement of Bishop Jerry Wilkerson, because last year he reached the retirement age for bishops, which is 75 years old. At the same time, the Holy Father announced the appointment of three new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Bishop Wilkerson has been serving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as a priest for 50 years, and as a bishop since 1998. He has fulfilled his ministry with zeal and dedication, and we are very grateful for the many things he has done for the people of God in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We are also grateful because we know that even in his retirement, his health and energy will allow him to continue his ministry among us. I’m personally very grateful for his ministry, for his friendship, advice and fraternal support since I came to the Archdiocese. Thank you, Bishop Wilkerson! Of our new auxiliary bishops, two of them are priests from L.A.— Msgr.
