February 2010 Volume 2, Number 1 Order of the Most Holy Mary Theotokos (Ordo Sanctissimae Theotokos, O.SS.T.) What Lent Means to Me Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. All churches that have a continuous history extending before AD 1500 observe Lent. The ancient church that wrote, collected, canonized, and propagated the New Testament also observed Lent, believing it to be a commandment from the apostles. “Remember that you are dust, and Christians throughout history have found prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to be to dust you shall the building blocks of Lenten spiritual growth. Lenten reflection acknowledges the brokenness of our lives and in our world and encourages us to find return.” repentance through Christ. A Reflection on where God is in our world. In our busy lives it can become easy to think that God doesn’t exist – or that he is not in our lives. It is important for us to slow down and listen for God in our world this Lent. And remember, while Lent is about giving something up, it is also about putting something positive in its place.

Awalt and Rhetts: Images of Nuestra Senora in New Mexico THE IMAGES OF NUESTRA SENORA IN NEW MEXICAN DEVOTIONAL ART: TRADffiONAL AND CONTEMPORARY Barbe Awalt and Paul Rhetts* In New Mexico, the tradition of making santos, images of the saints, has long been revered for its simple yet intense ex pression of the faith. Santos can be found as both statues (called bultos) and as flat paintings on wooden boards (retab los). From its medieval roots in both Spain and Mexico, santo making in New Mexico is as strong a tradition today as it was at its introduction 400 years ago. To understand any long-term tradition in New Mexico, one must ftrst understand some conditions that have made New Mexico different from the rest of the world. Catholicism, though it has had a four-hundred-year tradition in New Mex ico, has also had there some unique expressions of faith not found in the rest of the Catholic world.

FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD ~~ It may seem obvious that the theme for the Baptism of the Lord is “water,” but when one spends time with the readings today, one can see many different connotations for that water and its power. Isaiah calls the poor who are thirsty and tired to come to the water and take the spiritual food and drink that will be provided if we but seek the Lord. Here, God is both destination and consolation. The responsorial psalm follows suit with the image of drawing water from the springs of salvation. 1 John takes us to the reality of Christ as eucharist: not only Jesus’ birth and baptism, but his death, as we hear that Jesus came “by water and by blood.” The Gospel depicts John baptizing Jesus with water, and the Spirit baptizing Jesus. We experience both the humanity and the divinity of Christ. Indeed, water has much power to save us. - Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 15 CATHOLIC NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS! (Cont.) You’ll have to determine for yourself what a good goal would be–one spiritual book a month or half an hour of spiritual reading a day or maybe just one book this year–but reading worthwhile books can be an absolute game-changer.
