Some FAQs about FAME, Jr Musical Theatre Camp:

What’s this camp like? Students will train in musical theatre singing, choreography, and musical theatre acting Monday-Friday from 1:00-5:00 pm. In the first day, the staff will work with the students, teaching them songs and dances from the show so that everyone has a chance to learn before they audition. Auditions will be at the end of the first day, though, so the students would do well to prepare a song in advance. After that first day, it’s intensive acting/singing/choreography rehearsal.

When can we arrive/pick up? As early as 12:30 pm, as late as 5:30 pm.

Will every child receive a role? Yes. As is the policy of CTW, every child that auditions will receive a role so they have an opportunity to practice creating a character and performing on a stage. Some will receive solos, some lines, and some will be chorus roles, but everyone will have a chance to perform.

When will the roles be given out? The cast list will be emailed the night of June 6.

Is my child expected to memorize lines? Yes! This is our most challenging camp, with the intention of producing a fully-mounted, fully rehearsed play in just three weeks. This is close to what professional actors accomplish in terms of rehearsal schedules, so this is a good opportunity for performers to get a feel for pre-professional work.

What are the rehearsals like? Every actor will report to each rehearsal. The staff are going to be pulling double rehearsal work—so some actors will be working with the director while others may be working on choreography. There will not be a lot of down time—and any down time they have should be spent memorizing.

What do we do about lunch/snacks? If your student isn’t able to eat before rehearsal, you are welcome to send food with them. We have a refrigerator and microwave for their use, as well as some chips and candy bars in the concession stand for $.50 if they need a little boost.

What will the play be like? FAME, Jr is a shortened, more PG-rated version of the original musical FAME. Click here for information about this musical. There are a lot of roles for a variety of performers.

What should my child wear to rehearsal? Everyone should wear clothes they can move in—please no flip flops, short skirts, low tops, etc. Children will not be allowed onstage wearing flip flops. If your child has jazz shoes for dancing, bring those, too.

What should my child bring to classes and rehearsals? Please bring a writing utensil, water, and any meds your child may need. We have a water jug in the concession stand as well. Your child will be given a script and libretto which they must bring to each rehearsal

Can my child keep the script and libretto? The “Junior” musicals usually allow us to keep the books, so probably. We’ll let you know for sure once we’ve ordered them.

Do I have to pay for costuming? No. Your tuition covers the cost of costumes.

We’re going on vacation during this camp. Is my child ineligible? Unfortunately, yes. This is a highly intensive camp and your child really will be needed every day. If your child will miss one, maybe two days, it’s likely they can still participate. Outside of that, no.

My child will be in the Teen Company in the fall, but will be 12 during the camp. Can s/he participate in this musical? No. Only current members of Teen Company, or those 13-18 years old can participate. Those who just graduated high school are still eligible.
