TOY MUSEUM OF CATALONIA FIGUERES Salvador Dalí (1904) SALVADOR DALÍ THE FIRST TWENTY YEARS A FAMILY ALBUM SALVADOR DALÍ THE FIRST TWENTY YEARS A FAMILY ALBUM No evidence has been found that the Dalí-Domènech family actually kept a family album of portraits. However, a significant number of photographs have been found, clearly indicating that Salvador Dalí Domènech’s family was one that enjoyed having its picture taken frequently. These include both professional portraits taken in studios such as Carreras or Bosch in Figueres and the Fotografía Hispania studio in Barcelona, but also numerous photos taken by family friends, a less common occurrence at the time. Up until a few years ago, there was a small shed and storeroom in the Pitxot family home in Figueres on Muralla Street. This shed was found to be full of boxes of printed glass photographic plates that someone in the family had used. Salvador and his sister, Anna Maria, had their pictures taken in that same garden at different times when they were young. Another family photographer was Joan Xirau, Salvador’s classmate at Ramon Muntaner High School and with whom he and other students founded the magazine, Studium, in 1919. Joan took excellent pictures of both Anna Maria and Salvador in the artist’s first studio found on the terrace of the family home on Plaza de la Palmera. Stemming from our wish to recreate a family photo album of the Dalí-Domènech family during Salvador Dalí’s first twenty years, the Toy Museum of Catalonia in Figueres (MJC/F) has consulted thirteen different archives, some of which are directly related to the family: Eulàlia Bas Dalí’s archive, and those belonging to Emília Pomés (Anna Maria Dalí’s archive), Felip Domènech and Joan Lleonart Bonet Domènech. -

This portrait of Dalí was made when the artist was 38 years old. Philippe Halsman, a friend of Dalí’s, photographed the image, capturing the artist’s face animated by a maniacal expression. Since his days as an art student at the Academy in Madrid, Dalí had enjoyed dressing in an eccentric way to exhibit his individuality and artistic genius. In this portrait Dalí’s mustache, styled in two symmetrical curving arcs, enhances the unsettling expressiveness of his face. Dalí often treated his long mustache as a work of art, sculpting the hairs into the curve of a rhinoceros horn or weaving dollar bills into it. Unlike many of Dalí’s other relationships, his friendship with Halsman was quite stable, spanning more than three decades. -

"MIRROR WITH A MEMORY": PHOTOGRAPHY AS METAPHOR AND MATERIAL OBJECT IN VICTORIAN CULTURE Sarah Worman A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2017 Committee: Piya Pal-Lapinski, Advisor Kim Coates © 2017 Sarah Worman All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Piya Pal-Lapinski, Advisor In the Victorian period, photography was associated with the ghosts of history, con artists in the streets of London, and cultural anxieties about the future of Victorian society. The Victorian practice of photographing ghosts, or spirit photography, showed how Victorians viewed the past, present, and future. By examining the cultural artifact of Georgiana Houghton’s Chronicles of the Photographs of Spiritual Beings (1882), it becomes clear how photography affected Victorian literature as well as Victorian culture. In the short stories, “Oke of Okehurst” (1886) and “A Wicked Voice” (1887), Vernon Lee compared Victorian produced art to art from history. For Lee, the fast paced and highly commercialized art, which was influenced by photography, was not as powerful as art with historical context. An earlier work, Thomas Hardy’s A Laodicean: A Story of To-Day (1881), also showed the connections between photography, history, and uncertainty. The characters try to use photography to try and preserve a crumbling medieval castle, but their attempts end in failure. While technology like telegraphs gives Paula a sense of power, the novel leaves her wishing she had a more stable connection to the past and the future. These examples of Victorian literature show that photography affected Victorian culture at a deeper level than previously thought. -

Bilingual Distributed Word Representations from Document-Aligned Comparable Data

Following the recent advances in word representation learning, our model learns dense real-valued word vectors, that is, bilingual word embeddings (BWEs). Unlike prior work on inducing BWEs which heavily relied on parallel sentence-aligned cor- pora and/or readily available translation resources such as dictionaries, the article reveals that BWEs may be learned solely on the basis of document-aligned comparable data with- out any additional lexical resources nor syntactic information. We present a comparison of our approach with previous state-of-the-art models for learning bilingual word repre- sentations from comparable data that rely on the framework of multilingual probabilistic topic modeling (MuPTM), as well as with distributional local context-counting models. We demonstrate the utility of the induced BWEs in two semantic tasks: (1) bilingual lexicon extraction, (2) suggesting word translations in context for polysemous words. Our simple yet effective BWE-based models significantly outperform the MuPTM-based and context- counting representation models from comparable data as well as prior BWE-based models, and acquire the best reported results on both tasks for all three tested language pairs. -

I have outlined three models of depiction in the evolution of the fictional artist character: the maudlin artist of early popular literature, the clownish and suspicious artist of the screen and the ironically distanced artist of late twentieth century film and television. In the course of this study I argue that all configurations of the artist in these examples of popular fiction are constructs (positively or negatively) informed by standard patterns of representation. I term this construction the fictional generic artist. I locate this study in notions of the artist in the media, a relatively recent and largely unexplored field of inquiry, in addition to the expansive art historical and theoretical discourse on the myth of the artist, an oft chartered territory that art history has largely left barren in the wake of unprecedented demystification in the 1960s. -
