  • In Focus the Making of the Visitors
People Need Love – the first ABBA song Waterloo was ABBA’s first single, right? Yes – and no. Join us as we explore the story behind People Need Love, the very first single released by the group that later reached worldwide fame under the name ABBA. Party people failure In this day and age, when pop stars with little previous stage experience achieve instant number one hits through participation in television shows such as Pop Idol and American Idol, it is sobering to be reminded how long it actually took before ABBA achieved worldwide success. Although many in the 1970s regarded the four Swedes as a ”manufactured” band, very much along the lines of the groomed, styled and choreographed overnight sensations of the early 21st Century, nothing could be further from the truth. Not only had the individual members spent a decade performing, touring and recording in earlier groups or as solo artists before they grabbed the world’s attention with ’Waterloo’ in April 1974, by that time ABBA themselves had already been making pop music together for two years – and four years had passed since they first attempted a collaboration. Confused? Read on. The early 1970s was a somewhat insecure period for Björn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida. Benny had left his previous group, The Hep Stars, and although Björn was still making records with his group, the Hootenanny Singers, he knew he couldn’t count on them for any future career advancement. Furthermore, Björn and Benny wanted to focus their attention on their partnership in songwriting and record producing, and perhaps not be performers so much anymore.

  • Diez Datos Para Recordar a Marie Fredriksson, La Voz De Roxette Que Se Apaga
¡Y qué sueño fantástico llegamos a compartir!

Kent’s Sweden, or what a rock band can tell us about a nation OLA JOHANSSON Johansson, Ola (2013). Kent’s Sweden, or what a rock band can tell us about a nation. Fennia 191: 1, pp. 40-57. Helsinki. ISSN 798-5617. The Swedish rock band Kent is not only the most popular band in Sweden, but also perceived as quintessentially Swedish. Using the notion of “everyday na- tionalism” I argue that Kent both represent and actively shape contemporary Swedish national identity co-constitutively with their audience. Three themes are particularly important to understand this Swedishness. Firstly, the band was formed in the city of Eskilstuna but relocated to Stockholm, which illustrates a Swedish journey through class and space. Secondly, Kent interrogates a series of national myths in their songs. They do so using spatial and environmental meta- phors that can be conceptualized as different landscapes − inner, urban, and winter landscapes − representing Sweden. Thirdly, Kent also construct a “public landscape” that reflects on changes in Swedish society, including neoliberal and anti-immigrant tendencies. Keywords: music geography, Sweden, Kent, national identity, everyday national- ism, media analysis Ola Johansson, Department of Geography, University of Pittsburgh at Johns- town, 450 Schoolhouse Road, Johnstown, PA 15904, United States. Lawrence "Larry" Monaco, 2012 Hall of Fame Inductee, Administrator Larry Monaco became actively involved in soccer in 1970, when he helped to establish "Soccer on the Hill," the first Washington, D.C. youth soccer league. More than 40 years later, Monaco has a record full of service and positions held to further the advancement of youth soccer, as well as soccer at all levels. After becoming a certified referee and earning his "D" coaching license, Monaco served on the Virginia Youth Soccer Association’s Board of Directors from 1984-1997. His positions at VYSA included Secretary, Vice President, Adjudication Committee Chair, Finance Committee Chair and Region I Host Committee Co-Chair for the Region’s Cup competitions. Several years after retiring from the Federal Government, he formed the Soccer Club of Northern Neck (Va.) and served as the first president, and subsequently treasurer and coach for the youngest players. While he has been a mainstay in the Virginia and D.C. soccer scene since the 1970s, Monaco also impacted youth soccer nationally. From 2006- 2010, he served as President of US Youth Soccer. Prior to that, he served as Vice President and held many committee positions within US Youth Soccer. In his time as President, US Youth Soccer fully implemented the National League, which has become a highly competitive and popular part of the organization. He also championed the expansion of SoccerStart to Soccer Across America, which helps to provide soccer opportunities for youngsters in every area of the country, allowing them to build positive social and life skills for physical and mental development.
