Newsom 1 Introduction For reasons that are not yet entirely clear, sharp disagreements about pre- determinism and free will became a significant feature of Jewish theological stances in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Josephus provides the most ex- plicit consideration of these issues in ancient Jewish sources, as he attempts to distinguish the positions of the three major Jewish sects with respect to the philosophical category of “fate” (εἱμαρμένη). Josephus identifies the position of the Essenes as believing strongly in fate, to the apparent exclusion of free will (Ant. 13.172). Similarly, modern scholarly treatments of the Qumran yaḥad have acknowledged the very strong predeterminist element in their thinking, attested in a variety of sectarian or closely related texts.1 At the same time, there has been a degree of perplexity as to what to do with the obviously volun- tarist statements and assumptions that are present in these same documents. A variety of suggestions have been made, mostly to the effect that the sectar- ians were inconsistent or not fully systematic in their beliefs.2 This may in- deed be the case, though Jonathan Klawans argues that, properly understood, all deterministic systems are consistent with voluntarism in a rather minimal 1 I take the Qumran yaḥad movement to be Essene, though I consider it possible that the term “Essene” may also have referred to groups not formally part of the yaḥad. Chief among these ideological sects and groups is Sālimīyah sect, that belongs to its founder, Abul-Hassan Al-Basry Ahmad bin Mohammad bin Salem, who died in (297) AH / (909) AD. Sālimīyah sect is an Islamic ideological group that emerged in the middle of the third century AH / mid-tenth century AD. In fact, one of the most problematic issues of this study is that there are no ideological books for Sālimīyah sect available in our time. Few scholars mentioned the ideological views of Sālimīyah sect and we could hardly find any other academic studies that have considered these views. What really distinguishes this study is its ability to scrutinize for the first time the emergence of Sālimīyah sect from a historical point of view. Moreover, this research studies Sālimīyah sect's ideological views related to the Divine Self in particular. The scientific approaches used in the study are the extrapolative approach, the analytical approach and the comparative approach. Birbiri ile çelişen durumlar ve bilgileri çözmek imkansızlaştığı gibi, belirli sorunlara da neden olabilecektir. Bu açıdan nöroetik kavramı üzerinde değinilmeden önce, bu konuda temel yaklaşımlar, belirli bir felsefe içinde ele alınmasını gerekli kılmaktadır. Öncelikle konuyu ele alma biçimi, olayı yrumlama ve algılama düzeyi ortaya konulmalıdır. Bu amaçla nöroetik konusunda bir genel yaklaşım esasları oluşturulmaya çalışılmıştır. Aşağıda bir ilkeleme çalışması görülecektir. Many of the heated arguments about the meaning of “Bell’s theorem” arise because this phrase can refer to two different theorems that John Bell proved, the first in 1964 and the second in 1976. His 1964 theorem is the incompatibility of quantum phenomena with the dual assumptions of locality and determinism. His 1976 theorem is the incompatibility of quantum phenomena with the unitary property of local causality. This is contrary to Bell’s own later assertions, that his 1964 theorem began with that single, and indivisible, assumption of local causality (even if not by that name). While there are other forms of Bell’s theorems — which I present to explain the relation between Jarrett-completeness, “fragile locality”, and EPR-completeness — I maintain that Bell’s two versions are the essential ones. Although the two Bell’s theorems are logically equivalent, their assumptions are not, and the different versions of the theorem suggest quite different conclusions, which are embraced by different communities. -

[email protected] Received: 17/07/2019 Accepted: 08/12/2019 Abstract Islam has a political and social aspect in its essence and by no means, it is not considered as a purely spiritualistic and individualistic religion. The political legacy of Muhammad (PBUH) appears both in his holy book and in his nation and the political community that he provided to Medina during his ten years of migration. Hence, political affairs are intertwined with the history of Islam, and not only the social developments of Muslims, but also many religious divisions are influenced by political affairs. The present article is to take the role and function of politics, and political affairs into consideration in the Shiite world and in the early centuries of Islam and the time of the presence of the innocent and innocent Shiite Imams. The author tries to study the role of politics in the emergence of Shiism, and the sectarianization of Shiites by referring to narrative and historical sources and analyzing them appropriately, and by reviewing the political affairs and policy of Shiite Imams, the evidence shows that these political behaviors can be classified according to which political approaches and strategies. The consideration of the identity of Shiites on the eve of the beginning of the Absence and the political strategy drawn by the Imams for the Shiites in the era of the Absence is also the focus of this article. -

JAMESIAN FREE WILL, THE TWO-STAGE MODEL OF WILLIAM JAMES __________________________________________________________________ BOB DOYLE ABSTRACT Research into two-stage models of “free will” – first “free” random generation of alternative possibilities, followed by “willed” adequately determined decisions consistent with character, values, and desires – suggests that William James was in 1884 the first of a dozen philosophers and scientists to propose such a two-stage model for free will. We review the later work to establish James’s priority. By limiting chance to the generation of alternative possibilities, James was the first to overcome the standard two-part argument against free will, i.e., that the will is either determined or random. James gave it elements of both, to establish freedom but preserve responsibility. We show that James was influenced by Darwin’s model of natural selection, as were most recent thinkers with a two-stage model. In view of James’s famous decision to make his first act of freedom a choice to believe that his will is free, it is most fitting to celebrate James’s priority in the free will debates by naming the two-stage model – first chance, then choice -“Jamesian” free will. THE DECLINE OF DETERMINISM In the nineteenth century, according to historians of science1 and philosopher Ian Hacking2, there was a “rise in statistical thinking” and an “erosion of determinism.” The strict physical determinism implied by Isaac Newton’s classical mechanics was giving way to the statistical mechanics of physicists James Clerk Maxwell and Ludwig Boltzmann, who assumed that gases were composed of atoms and molecules moving at random and following statistical laws. -

I have mentioned in my thesis, in its preface, a short account of Asha'ri's biography. In his biographic account I have mentioned about his life and works and how he converted to his own school of thought, named after his name, from M'utazilism. Abu Ali al-Jubbai was his teacher and he acquired education from him and remained with him for about forty years of his life. Abu Ali al-Jubbai, being a M'utazilite, stressed more on reason than revelation. Asha'ri also had followed his path, but he was not satisfied. He again and again put his perplexity and anxiety before him, especially when he was defeated by his opponents in any assembly discussion (munazara). He, ultimately, decided to abandon M'utazilism, or the attitude of giving more importance to reason Abstract than revelation. God helped al-Ash'ari, as He always does, by sending His Prophet in his dream who guided him to follow the path of righteousness. Ultimately Ash'ari decided to defend orthodoxy. He posed the question of three brothers (for details see the thesis), where he wanted to justify that reason is not enough to solve every problem. -

This article describes the views of Qadarites and Jabarites about the revelation, reason, and human efforts. The method used is based on a literature library from books, magazines and articles related. The study concluded: first, for Jabarites, reasoning has no meaning, because reasoning is of no use to humans, they are more dominant subject to revelation or the provision of God in their every activities, so human just only accept anything that has been given by The Creator. While according to Qadarites, Reasoning is to proportionate the provisions that God has made for man, to contribute to the act of doing, good or bad. In connection with the concept of revelation, for Jabarites that the revelation is a source of important and basic to those that must be followed, because the verses they are using is a verse to support the argument they use. While revelation in according to Qadarites is considered as to proportionate their opinion, because God disposes all human actions, but humans have a stake in it in order to try and select it.Finally, in Human efforts, for Jabarites that no efforts, because everything he does has been determined by God. There is no human power to do in doing something. however, according to Qadarites that human effort is depend on human beings themselves and the result depends according what he has done without any intervention from God.
