HISTORY

Landshut was founded in 1204 by Duke and remained the main seat of the until 1255. Under the reign of the ”Rich Dukes” Landshut witnessed a glorious period from 1393 to 1503, when it was the seat of government of the dukedom of Bavaria-Landshut. Every four years the greatest European historical festival called ”Landshuter Hochzeit“ takes place, in which more than 2,000 citizens of Landshut celebrate the wedding of duke ”Herzog Georg der Reiche“ and the Polish king‘s daughter Hedwig in 1475. The next festival will take place in 2021. The city of Landshut has been the seat of government of since 1839.

Trausnitz Castle was established as a seat of the Wittelsbacher © StadtLandshut family in 1204 by Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria. In the , between 1255 and 1503, when Bavaria was divided into many separate dukedoms, Landshut became the central point of Lower Bavaria. As the seat of the Lower Bavarian dukes the castle gained considerably in signifi cance. After the end of the Middle Ages, the castle enjoyed its heyday as the court of the Bavarian crown princes, particularly during the time of crown prince Wilhelm from 1568 to 1579. As its importance grew over the centuries the castle was ex- tended and furnished with artworks and artefacts which can still bear witness today to all signifi cant eras of the castle’s history. The castle can be recognised by its impressive medieval fortifi ca- tions, the high Wittelsbacher Tower, the castle chapel with its distin- guished sculptural decoration and winged altar from the rich dukes.

Landshut Royal Wedding. Decorated horse-drawn carriages surrounded by princes, knights, maids and peasants, in colourful costumes and waving large fl ags fi ll the roads of Landshut’s every four years. They are celebrating the wedding of the Bavarian © StadtLandshut duke ”Herzog Georg der Reiche“ to Hedwig, daughter of the Polish King – even though the actual ceremony took place over 500 years ago (1475). Before the eyes of over 700,000 spectators from all over the world, every actor has a defi ned role and must stick to precise guidelines. Maids, peasants and princes must not wear glasses, watches or bring mobile phones: Everything should look as authentic and realistic as if it really were the Middle Ages. Playing a part in the Landshut Wedding is often a matter of family tradition, carried out from childhood and over several generations. The celebration has now been re-enacted for 114 years.

St. Martin‘s church. At 130.6 m the tower is the tallest brick tower in the world. Work on Landshut’s parish and collegiate church was begun by the master builder Hans Krumenauer in 1385 and concluded in 1500 with the considerable involvement of Hans von Burghausen. With its unusual proportions, which are extended in the vertical, and its combination of the high and late Gothic styles, the church is one of the most signifi cant Gothic buildings in Southern © StadtLandshut .
