Good Weather for the Bronze Practice Expedition

On the day of the Royal Wedding, 25 young people, 4 members of staff and a very gallant parent – Andre Sloos set off for the first stage of this year's Bronze D of E Practice Expedition. De spite earlier threats of rain, the weather was perfect for walking – sunny but not too hot. That didn't stop the participants loosing their way a few times but all arrived at Stonham Barns Campsite late afternoon in good spirits. The evening weather was glorious and everyone pitched their tents well and cooked their evening meals. There were a few problems the next morning such as missing maps and lack of food for lunch, but everything was sorted out and all the teams began to realise the importance of team planning. Everyone was on their way again by 9 am and walked another 12 – 14 km on the Saturday back to Ashfield cum Thorpe. IN THIS ISSUE Well done to all and a very big thank you to Andre Sloos, Mr Phillips, Miss Beveridge and Miss Campbell. We look forward to the Qualify ing Expedition in June. There were just over 150 pupils involved from painting sets to standing on the stage. This is almost fifth of the entire school. All the students worked incredibly hard so a huge well done to all those involved.

We would like to thank all the staff, parents and students who supported them by coming to watch and the PTA for all their support with refresh ments and organizing the raffle. The production team will be starting the planning process for next years production after half term so keep an eye on the website for more information. Mr Phillips

School Council Dear All, The school council’s for each year group have set themselves an amazing challenge of raising £1200 from each year group to construct a sheltered outside eating area. We are not expecting to do this over a short period of time so keep a look out for all the posters and fund raising activities to follow. Year 7 have been the first to start with a computer club on Tuesday lunchtimes in A4 which costs just 20p for a 15 minute session. I have been overwhelmed by their commitment and enthusiasm for the project and with a year group like this I am sure great things will follow. Other things the Council has been involved in: Raising the Commendation scheme profile by selecting and buying the trophies Changes to the Uniform Interviewing the new staff for school Putting complaints, ideas and positive comments forward to the school via their meetings And much, much more Thank you to all the School Council reps. The RSC Chemical Analyst competition @ UEA On 10 th May, two teams of AS Chemists took part in a Royal Society of Chemistry competition at UEA in Norwich. The chal lenge – to chemically analyse a sample of Coca Cola, using refractometry, HPLC and titrations. A chance to use some of the sophisticated analytical machines in a Uni versity lab. The students had to work as a team to gather data on sugar levels and acidity in the drink. They then used High Perform ance Liquid Chromatography to identify some of the more complex molecules that give Coke it’s instantly recognisable fla vour. Sadly, we still don’t know the top se cret recipe ………. Both teams found the day challenging (and tiring), but gathered enough results to report back to the University staff.

The Hartismere students enjoyed the chance to work with postgraduate scientists and to try out high quality analyti cal techniques in an academic setting. They also got the chance to look around the UEA campus. Mr Luxton

First Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award Ceremony for Hartismere Students

Recently Maya Harris and Hannah Spooner became the first pu pils from Hartismere to receive their Bronze Awards at a county awards ceremony. The ceremony took place at and was attended by pupils from North Suffolk who had achieved Bronze and Silver Awards, together with their parents and Award Leaders. A local teacher from , Amanda Richmond, gave a very inspiring illustrated talk on her climb to the summit of Everest – we were amazed that the sherpa was able to climb easily without oxygen before giving the pupils their awards. Lewis Craig also gained his Bronze cer tificate but was unable to attend the evening. Since then Saskia Martindale, Ruby Mason, and Kate Thompson have all completed their awards so will be able to attend the next ceremony. If any other year 11s have completed their sections but are having problems uploading onto their eDofE portal, bring your evidence into school after the exams and Mrs O'Carroll will help you complete your award. Suffolk Schools Track & Field Cup

On Thursday 19 th May the Suffolk Schools Track & Field Cup was held in Bury St. Edmunds. Eleven schools from the county were competing at both Junior (Yr7 & 8) and Interme diate (Yr9 & 10) level. Hartismere pupils put in some out standing performances in some keenly contested events. At Junior level the Girls 4 x 100m team (Sophia Bhullar, Jess McKee, Emily Goodwin and Sian Hibbert) eclipsed the rest of the field to finish a deserved first place, having all put in good performances earlier in the day in their individual events, Shannon Sayers also finished second in Javelin. Helena Coe put in a solid display to win the Intermediate Girls Shot with a throw of 9.8m. There were also notable per formances from Cicely LockWilliams and Hannah Maher in the 100m and 200m respectively.

Cameron McGhie (Year 7) won his 100m race (a year early!) in a time of 14.2 seconds. Freddie HumphreyCalton won 200m in a time of 28.2 seconds. Matt Welfare and Sean Dundas won their respective races in the 80m hurdles with the same time of 15.7 seconds (Matt went on to finish sec ond in the high jump!) and Euan McKie put in a personal best throw of 32.32m in the Javelin to win his event. Strong per formances were also put in by Joe Broom (100m), Michael Drake (200m) and Giles Blanchard (Shot).

In the Senior Boys competition there were wins for Tom Hargrave (100m) and Cameron McKie (1500m), both of whom are eligible to compete again next year, and Luke Britton (Javelin) and Louis Harvey (Shot).

Well done to all those who competed, it was a fantastic effort by every member of the team!

Year 7 Fundraising The Physics of Juggling On the 3rd of May the A Level physics students attended another lecture at the Cavendish Laboratories in Cambridge, this time on the Physics of Juggling. The talk was very interesting with the speaker, Colin Wright, juggling throughout the presentation. The theory was just as amazing and cer tainly made the au dience think. To cap the evening off Miss Pearce learnt to juggle in the minibus on the way home, well done! Well done to the Year 7 pupils for raising £1604.61 for Mr Arthur the British Heart Foundation. They all took part in a sponsored Skipathon during their PE lessons. Miss Beveridge
