As I mentioned in the my last editor notes both Hemmings Muscle Machine and Clas- sic Car constantly have articles on Oldsmobiles. Well I was not disappointed with the Aug issue of MM as the cover car was a ‘69 HO with 6 pages of coverage inside. The Sept issue of CC they listed the ‘40 Oldsmobile Hydramatic, ‘49 88 and ‘66 Toro as the most Innovative American Cars out of 18 total. They also featured 6 pages of the total restoration of a ‘64 Cutlass wagon owned by Jim Schultz from AZ. by Editor, Larry Ewing

The overrun expenses were caused by Trophy and Inn at Morro Bay Banquet costs. Next year’s Zone Meet will not be at the “Inn at Morro Bay”. Our club bank account is solvent. What’s Going On? We know you’ve been reading and hearing a lot these days about the plans for our new build- ing, so we wanted to send you a special informational email with “the real scoop.”

History Paul and Renee Snider, local philanthropists and car lovers, approached us a few years ago about locating a new museum they wanted to open near us in the Docks Area or perhaps even co-locating in the same building, as they knew we were looking for a new facility/location. We looked in the McClellan Park area, Richards Blvd and elsewhere before finally striking a deal with the City to purchase our current property and build a new facility at our existing location.

The Sniders generously committed to paying for both the property and the cost of construction of the new 180,000 square foot facility that would house both the California Automobile Mu- seum as well as the new Natural History Museum. The current plan is for the Auto Museum to occupy approximately 2/3 of the space (100,000 square feet) and the Natural History Museum to occupy approximately 50,000 square feet. We will then have shared spaces such as bath- rooms, elevators, foyers, event areas, etc.

Currently Obviously, this is a huge gift for us, and we will only need to be responsible to fund the tenant improvements we decide to make to create an auto museum atmosphere. They will lease the building to us for 99 years at $1/year, and we are currently working on an Operating Agreement between the two museums. This is the kind of offer that comes along once in a lifetime. The Sniders are willing to donate $15 million+ toward a new home for the Auto Museum and their collection - an offer most museums only dream about!

The Sniders have hired a team of people to work on the project, including an architect, devel- oper, museum designer, public relations, urban planner and more. We had hoped to be able to pull permits by the end of the year, but after presenting our plan to the City Planning & Design Commission, are now realizing the process will take much more time than that, so we are slow- ing down our timetable.

During this “slow-down,” we are working fast and furiously to do community outreach, make changes to the current plan based on recommendations from the Planning and Design Commis- sion, and develop a more comprehensive strategy to get us through the minefield of challenges that come with a project such as this.

Timeline Our plan is to work on the interior and exterior of the facility during the next few weeks, con- tinue to meet with City staff to coordinate the project, do a lot of community outreach to various groups like Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau, Metro Chamber, Broadway Partner- ship, Downtown Partnership, Sacramento Animal Shelter, and more.

If you would like to help, we do have some opportunities. We will be continuing to update you via email, and you can also visit the Project Website for further information.

8 Portal Park Cadillac Show, July 28th 2013

The Cadillac Club had their 2013 annual Don Frolich Memorial National Meet in Cupertino once again. It is opened to all non-Cadillac car Clubs and Packard had the biggest turnout with about a dozen cars. Oldsmobiles count was four including Dan and Jacki Flanagan, 48, 98, Larry Camuso, ‘48 78, Trish and Stuart Overholtzer and kids ‘95 Cutlass and yours truly Larry and Linda, 50, 88 and on leash, Bella. Although Oldsmobile was lightly represented Larry Camuso was able to win the Best of Show non-Cadillac award with his low mileage Town Sedan. This year they had an all you can eat BBQ which was very good. The weather was just right with plenty of shade. A good time was had by all.

10 2013 OCA National Meet By Jon Manji

All roads led to Springfield, IL this year as the Archway Olds Club and Illinois Val- ley Olds Club hosted the Meet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel from July 23rd to the 27th. You longtime members may recall that this was also the site of the 1998 and 1983 National Meets. There was a strong turnout of the pre-war cars (both stock and modi- fied), which even included a 1902 Curved Dash replica. Attendance-wise, there were over 250 Oldsmobiles on the show field, and the indoor and outdoor swap meet and vendor areas seemed larger than in the past few years.

While the attendance from the Midwest was very strong, there were very few Cali- fornians there. I did chat with Don Parson and his wife, who came from Southern California, as well as former Californians Greg and Debbie Childs, who now live in Montana and drove their ‘50 Club Sedan to the Meet. As could be expected, OCA members from Illinois turned out in the greatest numbers, with about 110 members registering.

The judged show is the centerpiece of any National Meet, and to make this happen, OCA and the host chapters depend upon the efforts of dozens of member volunteers. I again volunteered to judge, and was pleasantly surprised to not only receive the judging class assignment that I requested, but also the role of team captain, a first for me. The OCA Chief Judge Ed Konsmo and Event Head Judge Randy Bardle conducted an informative judges’ orientation and training session, which introduced first-time judges to the process and provided a refresher for the rest of the judges. A distinctive touch this year was the request to wear the sponsor-supplied red St. Louis Cardinals t-shirts while judging. Team loyalties aside, it did make it very easy to spot the judges on the show field. Other distinctive recognition items for each of the judges included personalized and framed Certificates of Appreciation and Maglite Solitaire flashlights.

Once we headed outside to start judging, the dark clouds and occasional raindrop encouraged all of the judging teams to move things along and try to finish before the rain started. Most, if not all of the teams did finish judging before the rain really started in early afternoon.

The Friday afternoon rain prompted many attendees to visit the indoor swap area, which was graced that day by a visit from none other than Miss Hurst Golden Shifter, Linda Vaughn. On Saturday, the host chapters conducted a fund-raising auction, which featured items as large as a completely rebuilt and modified Olds V-8 engine. 11 Thanks must go to the host chapters and OCA for putting together another great Na- tional Meet. It was an opportunity to learn more about Oldsmobiles, see old friends and make new ones, and it was a lot of fun! Jon

Below are a few of the many photos Jon took of the show, enjoy, ed

12 13 Indianapolis Motor Speedway Trip By Jon Manji

The trip to the Midwest for the 2013 OCA National Meet was a long one, so it made sense to visit other “local” points of interest to make the most of it. Looking at a U.S. map showed the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (aka The Speedway) to be relatively close (about 200 miles) to Springfield, so never having visited The Speedway, I de- cided to go.

I don’t follow auto racing very closely. So I didn’t know that Sunday, July 28th was the 20th annual Brickyard 400, the most-attended NASCAR race in the series. I planned to visit the Speedway on Monday the 29th, and wondered why there was a special grounds tour scheduled for that day, one of only two scheduled every year. Nice coincidence, I thought.

While at the National Meet, I was chatting with Jerry Wilson, and mentioned my planned visit to The Speedway. Jerry asked me if I’d like to drive on the track--I thought he was kidding, until he mentioned that he and his wife were planning to at- tend the Brickyard 400 and had a coupon for a track drive. They were heading home on Sunday right after the race, and would not be able to use the coupon. I gratefully accepted the coupon and adjusted my schedule to arrive at The Speedway early for the drive.

The track drive went smoothly, as the track personnel have the organization and skill to accommodate crowds and move things right along. For safety reasons, track drive participants are limited to a maximum of 30 mph. Driving on the track in my rental car, I developed a greater appreciation for the skill level and quick reflexes that race drivers need to circle the 2.5 mile- long track at roughly seven times the speed I was driving. The grounds tour showed participants the key elements of the Speedway, such as the Pagoda (observation & timing tower), pit area, garages, and of course, the track itself. Over the years, the brick track surface has been gradually paved over with asphalt, to the point where all that remains of the brick surface is a one yard-wide band at the start/finish line. , winner of the 1996 Brickyard 400, started the tradition of kneeling at the start/finish line and kissing the Yard of Bricks to honor the history of The Speedway. As part of our tour, we were able to access the track and “Kiss the Bricks” as Ryan Newman, the 2013 Brickyard 400 win- ner, had done less than 24 hours before us. That’s me above in my Nor Cal T-shirt. 14 My last stop during my visit was the Hall of Fame Museum. The Museum has a the- ater and many displays, including a rotating display of many of the Indy 500 winning cars. Of particular interest was the winning 1998 car, driven by Eddie Cheever and powered by an Oldsmobile Aurora V-8 engine. (Photo below)

With over 100 years of auto racing history and an active racetrack, The Speedway is a must-see if you’re in the area. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

A New Look for the NorCal Olds Website

Many of you have probably noticed that there is a new look for our website, but for those who haven’t visited in a while take a look. It has a slightly different format and should be much easier to navigate. Everything is still there as was in the old format. The link for the Bulletin Board is located under Announcements. Club items for sale is located in Shirts & Stuff along with merchandise photos. The Mondello Tribute will take a few minutes to download and I’m currently working on it to be interactive with the site, so stay tuned. We’re still looking for more member cars to add to those already shown.

I hope you like what you see.

Don Sutherland Webmaster Our Webmaster Don Sutherland is featuring the car of the month on our Olds Club Website. These are picked by him at random and are featured the entire month with identification. Take a look each month and it may be your car featured. Nor Cal Olds Club Website: www.norcalolds.com If you don’t have any photos of your car floating around our club maybe it’s time to send us some or show up at a show. We will take photos for you for our future use on our Website or Olds- letter or both. 15 OCA Board Changes

By Jon Manji

In the past few years, there has been a lot of discussion in the Oldsmobile community concerning OCA and its leadership. Many of the discussion topics are being ad- dressed through OCA bylaws and policy changes, as well as personnel changes. You will see many of these changes announced in upcoming issues of Journey With Olds, but I’d like to briefly discuss the personnel changes, since one of them involves me.

The local OCA chapters are represented on the OCA Board by their respective Zone Directors. Since the last OCA Board meeting in 2012, the Vice President and three of the fourteen Zone Directors have resigned. At this year’s Board meeting, one of the first items of business was to fill the vacancies. Candidates were proposed by Jerry Wilson and confirmed in their new positions by Board vote. Some of the candidates were new to the Board, and other changed positions on the Board. All elected Board positions have terms that expire next year.

The Board vacancies were filled as follows: Karl Sup is Vice President; Al Bouney and Everett Horton are Atlantic Northeast Zone Directors; Mike Siedlik is one of the Western Great Lakes Zone Directors; and I replace Karl as one of the Pacific South- west Zone Directors. The Swap Meet Chairman position, formerly held by Everett Horton, is now the single Board vacancy.

There has been progress in straightening things out in the OCA, but much work still remains and I will try my best to move us towards OCA’s objectives. My term is up in July 2014, and I haven’t decided if I will seek another term, so if anyone is interested in running, please let me know. This is no reflection on the position, I had already committed to assisting with our 2015 national meet, so either way I will still be active in OCA at the national level.

In the meantime, if you have concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me.

The 2013 Nationals was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield, Ill and as required the host chapter(s) needed to produce a meet magazine. I got a copy and was very impressed with the quality and think they met or exceeded the high bar we set with ours in 2011..with one exception! The picture on left was on a full page on pg 5 from the Crowne Plaza welcoming all attendees to their hotel and show. My issue is the car they show is not an Oldsmobile!

Does anybody out there know what this mystery car is?
