List of Bivalve Molluscs from British Columbia, Canada Compiled by Robert G. Forsyth Research Associate, Invertebrate Zoology, Royal BC Museum, 675 Belleville Street, Victoria, BC V8W 9W2; [email protected] Rick M. Harbo Research Associate, Invertebrate Zoology, Royal BC Museum, 675 Belleville Street, Victoria BC V8W 9W2; [email protected] Last revised: 11 October 2013 INTRODUCTION Classification rankings are constantly under debate and review. The higher classification utilized here follows Bieler et al. (2010). Another useful resource is the online World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS; Gofas 2013) where the traditional ranking of Pteriomorphia, Palaeoheterodonta and Heterodonta as subclasses is used. This list includes 237 bivalve species from marine and freshwater habitats of British Columbia, Canada. Marine species (206) are mostly derived from Coan et al. (2000) and Carlton (2007). Freshwater species (31) are from Clarke (1981). Common names of marine bivalves are from Coan et al. (2000), who adopted most names from Turgeon et al. (1998); common names of freshwater species are from Turgeon et al. (1998). Changes to names or additions to the fauna since these two publications are marked with footnotes. Marine groups are in black type, freshwater taxa are in blue. Introduced (non-indigenous) species are marked with an asterisk (*). Marine intertidal species (n=84) are noted with a dagger (†). Quayle (1960) published a BC Provincial Museum handbook, The Intertidal Bivalves of British Columbia. Harbo (1997; 2011) provided illustrations and descriptions of many of the bivalves found in British Columbia, including an identification guide for bivalve siphons and “shows”. Lamb & Hanby (2005) also illustrated many species.

In a preliminary cladistic analysis of the bivalve family Cardiidae (Schneider 1992), members of the subfamilies Protocardiinae, Lahilliinae, and Laevicardiinae, plus the genus Nemocardium, were found to be the least derived taxa of cardiids. A cladistic analysis is undertaken of the genera and subgenera of these cardiid taxa, plus several Mesozoic taxa which have never been assigned to any subfamily. The Late Triassic Tulongocardium, which is placed in Tulongocardiinae subfam. n., is the sister taxon to all other cardiids. Protocardiinae is restricted to the genus Protocardia. Most other Mesozoic taxa which have been placed in the Protocardiinae are found to be members of the Lahilliinae. Nemocardium is placed in the Laevicardiinae. Incacardium, Pleuriocardia, and Dochmocardia form a monophyletic group, Pleuriocardiinae subfam. n. Pleuriocardiinae, Laevi- cardiinae, and the remaining members of the Cardiidae (herein informally termed "cucardiids") form a monophyletic group. Jay A. Some financial support from (or via) NKMB (Nordiskt Kollegium för Marin Biologi), during the last years of the existence of this organization (until 1993), is thankfully acknowledged. The primary purpose of these checklists is to faciliate for everyone, trying to identify organisms from the area, to know which species that earlier have been encountered there, or in neighbouring areas. A secondary purpose is to faciliate for non-experts to put as correct names as possible on organisms, including names of authors and years of description. So far these checklists are very preliminary. Due to restricted access to literature there are (some known, and probably many unknown) omissions in the lists. Certainly also several errors may be found, especially regarding taxa like Plathelminthes and Nematoda, where the experience of the compiler is very rudimentary, or. e.g. Porifera, where, at least in certain families, taxonomic confusion seems to prevail. This is very much a small modernization of T.

Invertebrate Biology 12 I(4): 27 1-324. 0 2002 American Microscopical Society, Inc. On bivalve phylogeny: a high-level analysis of the Bivalvia (Mollusca) based on combined morphology and DNA sequence data Gonzalo Giribet'%aand Ward Wheeler2 ' Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University; 16 Divinity Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts 021 38, USA Division of Invertebrate Zoology, American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West at 79th Street, New York, New York 10024, USA Abstract. Bivalve classification has suffered in the past from the crossed-purpose discussions among paleontologists and neontologists, and many have based their proposals on single char- acter systems. More recently, molecular biologists have investigated bivalve relationships by using only gene sequence data, ignoring paleontological and neontological data. In the present study we have compiled morphological and anatomical data with mostly new molecular evi- dence to provide a more stable and robust phylogenetic estimate for bivalve molluscs. The data here compiled consist of a morphological data set of 183 characters, and a molecular data set from 3 loci: 2 nuclear ribosomal genes (1 8s rRNA and 28s rRNA), and 1 mitochondria1 coding gene (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I), totaling -3 Kb of sequence data for 76 rnollu bivalves and 14 outgroup taxa). The data have been analyzed separately and in combination by using the direct optimization method of Wheeler (1 996), and they have been evaluated under 1 2 analytical schemes. The combined analysis supports the monophyly of bivalves, paraphyly of protobranchiate bivalves, and monophyly of Autolamellibranchiata, Pteriomorphia, Hetero- conchia, Palaeoheterodonta, and Heterodonta s.I., which includes the monophyletic taxon An- omalodesmata.

CATALOG OF RECENT MOLLUSCAN TYPES IN THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY compiled by Lindsey T. Groves NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY MALACOLOGY SECTION 900 Exposition Boulevard, Los Angeles, California, 90007, USA [email protected] [last updated 3 January, 2012] Abstract. Recent molluscan types currently housed in the Malacology Section of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County are listed herein. Each type lot entry includes original species/subspecies name, original genus, author, original citation, type status, LACM number, number of specimens and preservation, type locality or collection locality, collector [if known], date collected [if known], and current taxonomic status if different from original description. INTRODUCTION This catalog is published in accordance with Recommendation 72F.4 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Ride & others, 2000:79). This listing includes all molluscan type material currently housed at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and supercedes the type listing of Sphon (1971). To date 1922 molluscan type lots (71,000+ specimens) are reported for 1147 species and 99 subspecies, which includes 589 holotypes, 1277 paratype lots, 10 lectotypes, 13 paralectotype lots, 29 syntype lots, 3 neotypes, and 2 neotype lots in 550+ references. Type categories listed include: Holotype (in red), paratype(s) (in blue), syntype(s) (in orange), lectotype (in pink), paralectotype(s) (in aqua), and neotype and/or neotype lots (in brown) as defined by Ride & others (2000). Because the term cotype is not recognized by the ICZN, lots originally designated as cotype(s) (in green) by original specimen labels are now referred to as syntype(s).

Volumina Jurassica, 2015, Xiii (1): 3–16 Doi: 10.5604/17313708 .1148552 Palaeolatitudinal gradients along the southeastern Palaeo-Pacific margin and the distribution of Early Jurassic bivalves Susana E. DAMBORENEA 1, Javier ECHEVARRÍA 1 Key words: South America, bivalves, palaeolatitudal gradients, palaeogeography, Early Jurassic. Abstract. Presence-absence bivalve species data for each Early Jurassic stage along southeastern South America between 20 and 46°S present-day latitude were processed by a set of analytical methods to analyse the palaeolatitudinal patterns of diversity and distribution. The expected decrease in species diversity towards higher latitudes is punctuated by a consistent local diversity increase between 34 and 42°, especially evident during Pliensbachian and Toarcian times, which may be due to an abrupt change in palaeogeography at that latitude, coinciding with the Curicó direct connection to the open ocean and the establishment of an increased variety of habitats within the exten- sive Neuquén Basin. The proportions of systematic groups show relative increases towards both higher latitudes (Crassatelloidea, Nucula- noidea, Pectinoidea, Monotoidea, Inoceramoidea) and lower latitudes (Trigonioidea, Pholadomyoidea, Limoidea, Lucinoidea). Epifaunal bivalves were dominant during the Hettangian but by Pliensbachian–Toarcian times they were less common than infaunal ones, while semi-infaunal species had low diversities during the whole Early Jurassic. This study suggests that (a) large scale geographical conditions should be taken into account for the analysis of latitudinal diversity trends among benthonic faunas; and (b) latitudinal trends of some liv- ing bivalve lineages may have a longer and more complex history than previously thought.
