Course Summary A common—but controversial—idea in global policy debates is that the production of natural resources is associated with a whole host of political problems. These resources are supposed to be sources of domestic and international exploitation, civil and inter-state violence, corruption and crime, pollution and authoritarianism. There are now international public policy processes that focus upon these issues as they relate to water, wheat, bananas, coffee, timber, opium, copper, uranium, rare earths, etc. In this course we will examine each of these debates, focusing the elaborate literature that has developed from analysis of the largest commodities—by value and volume—in world trade: the hydrocarbons crude oil and natural gas. Learning Objectives The first third of the course will supply students with an overview of the hydrocarbons industry, including some of the technological and economic particulars that set it apart from the production of other commodities. In the second third of the class, attention will shift to the role that hydrocarbons play in the political and economic development of individual countries. In the final third of the class, the subject will be geopolitics, and how hydrocarbons produce conflict or cooperation at the international level. This course will not frame the controversies surrounding oil and gas in the conventional manner as matters of energy policy.

    ITER - Wikipedia 1 of 23 Coordinates: 43.70831°N 5.77741°E ITER ITER (originally the International ITER Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor[1]) is an international nuclear fusion research and engineering megaproject, which will be the world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment. It is an experimental tokamak nuclear fusion reactor that is being built next to the Cadarache facility in Saint-Paul-lès-Durance, in Provence, southern France.[2] The ITER thermonuclear fusion reactor has been designed to produce a fusion plasma equivalent to 500 megawatts (MW) of thermal output power for around twenty minutes while 50 megawatts of Thirty-five participating nations thermal power are injected into the tokamak, Formation 24 October 2007 resulting in a ten-fold gain of plasma heating power.[3] Thereby the machine aims to demonstrate Headquarters Saint-Paul-lès- the principle of producing more thermal power from Durance, France the fusion process than is used to heat the plasma, Director- Bernard Bigot something that has not yet been achieved in any General fusion reactor. In fact, I am not aware that another book like this even exists. This is not an opinion piece, nor is it a peak oil book. It is a collection of factual information covering all aspects of the industry. From oil in the ground to product in the tanks (and everything in between) - this book contains everything you could ever want to know about the industry. I like to think I know quite a bit about different areas of the industry, but I still managed to learn a lot from this book. It doesn't matter if you are a complete novice or already know quite a bit about the industry; there is something for everyone in this book. Downey displays a deep understanding across all sectors of the industry. For instance, if I didn't know better I would have guessed that the refining chapter was written by someone who had spent an entire career in the refining industry. The only books on refining that I have read that were more comprehensive were those written specifically as technical guides for running a refinery. Other areas are covered in similar detail. There is no aspect of the industry left uncovered.

(A quick measure comes up with more than 10 ft of shelf space filled with books relating to the topic of peak oil and alternate fuels – not counting the books that deal with drilling and other aspects of technology that relate more to my day job). Some of these are quite expensive. Jean Grove’s book that I have recently been quoting, is now discounted to around $350, and several of the alternate fuels books are well over $100. But price doesn't mean necessarily useful and of my collection only 8 books sit on my desk. Today I added another to that rather select group. It is Morgan Downey’s “Oil 101”. It sits on my desk, not because it gives me a lot of the in-depth detail that many of the stories that I write require, but rather it is because it has a vast reservoir of the small, but invaluable, snippets that provide that useful addenda that help in understanding a story. It is, I suppose, in the format of the book I would have written if I had tied together the Tech Talk series. It differs from them, however, both in being focused not just on oil, but also in explaining more of the financial matters that play such a significant part in the price we pay for oil and thereafter for the gas that goes into the tank.

In considering this activity, the terminology used by pundits and journalists to describe the significance of issues such as oil demand, the complexities of access to petroleum and concerns over security threats to supplies of oil is familiar. Juxtapositions such as the ‘geopolitics of oil’, ‘energy geopolitics’, the ‘geopolitics of resource wars’ and the ‘geopolitics of oil and gas’ are all familiar. But what do they mean when they use ‘geopolitics’ in this context? Thus, by extension, can petroleum geopolitics - a hybrid conceptual construction used in this thesis - be disassembled into its component parts, analysed and systematically understood. This is the aim of this thesis. This thesis contends that the very nature of oil and gas reserves, the processes of exploration and production, and the means that govern and characterise the transportation of petroleum overland and by sea is inherently geopolitical - that some core features of geopolitical theory and key geopolitical concepts are pivotal in determining the ontology and process of the international oil business.
