“Between the Creeks” Gwen Pettit This is a compilation of weekly newspaper columns on local history written by Gwen Pettit during 1986-1992 for the Allen Leader and the Allen American in Allen, Texas. Most of these articles were initially written and published, then run again later with changes and additions made. I compiled these articles from the Allen American on microfilm at the Allen Public Library and from the Allen Leader newspapers provided by Mike Williams. Then, I typed them into the computer and indexed them in 2006-07. Lois Curtis and then Rick Mann, Managing Editor of the Allen American gave permission for them to be reprinted on April 30, 2007, [email protected]. Please, contact me to obtain a free copy on a CD. I have given a copy of this to the Allen Public Library, the Harrington Library in Plano, the McKinney Library, the Allen Independent School District and the Lovejoy School District. Tom Keener of the Allen Heritage Guild has better copies of all these photographs and is currently working on an Allen history book. Keener offices at the Allen Public Library. Gwen was a longtime Allen resident with an avid interest in this area’s history. Some of her sources were: Pioneering in North Texas by Capt. THE CONSTITUTION AND THE ANNEXATION OF TEXAS Earl M. Maltz* I. INTRODUCTION The annexation of Texas was by any standard a pivotal moment in the political history of the United States. The deci sion to add Texas to the Union was either directly or indirectly responsible for the acquisition of all of the territory of the United States south and west of the Louisiana Purchase. An nexation was also a critical issue in the presidential election of 1844 and the more general political struggle between Whigs and Democrats. Moreover, the dispute over Texas was a flashpoint in the evolving sectional conflict between the representatives of the free states and slave states.' The discussions of the issue in Congress had a dual aspect. Many of the arguments both for and against annexation were overtly phrased in terms of expediency. In addition, however, the debate over Texas had an important constitutional dimen sion, raising fundamental questions about the structure of the nation. -

FACETS OF TEXAS LEGAL HISTORY Frances Spears Cloyd* OR three hundred years Spain ruled vast areas in the Western hemisphere. She regarded these colonial possessions as being en- tirely the King's, for his use and benefit. She exploited them for royal profit through a tight trade monopoly and extended her laws into them. Her domination was approaching an end when the Anglo-Ameri- cans began to come into Texas. Moses Austin got permission from the Spanish government to take a colony into Texas in 1821. He died before he was able to complete his project and bequeathed the responsibility to his son, Stephen. In this same year Mexico and Spain were clashing. Iturbide led a pow- erful liberal movement based on unity of all classes, independence under a Bourbon prince with power limited by a constitution, and protection of the Catholic Church. Mexico proclaimed her independence from Spain and proceeded to the drafting of an extremely complex constitution.' It was completed and promulgated in 1824. -

Semester: Winter 2015. Class Times: Mondays, 9:00AM to 10:40 AM at Costa Coffee or equivalent. Office Hours: 11:00-12:00 AM Mondays…or by appointment. Course Status: Elective. Course Summary A common—but controversial—idea in global policy debates is that the production of natural resources is associated with a whole host of political problems. These resources are supposed to be sources of domestic and international exploitation, civil and inter-state violence, corruption and crime, pollution and authoritarianism. There are now international public policy processes that focus upon these issues as they relate to water, wheat, bananas, coffee, timber, opium, copper, uranium, rare earths, etc. In this course we will examine each of these debates, focusing the elaborate literature that has developed from analysis of the largest commodities—by value and volume—in world trade: the hydrocarbons crude oil and natural gas. Learning Objectives The first third of the course will supply students with an overview of the hydrocarbons industry, including some of the technological and economic particulars that set it apart from the production of other commodities. In the second third of the class, attention will shift to the role that hydrocarbons play in the political and economic development of individual countries. In the final third of the class, the subject will be geopolitics, and how hydrocarbons produce conflict or cooperation at the international level. This course will not frame the controversies surrounding oil and gas in the conventional manner as matters of energy policy. -

After the creation of the United States from the original 13 colonies, other territories were granted statehood. Only Texas entered the union as a separate and independent nation. The distinctive nature of Texas owes much to its having been a republic before it was a state and to the influence of its settlers. Socializing with neighbors was an important part of community life during the years of the republic. Not all Texas settlers wore buckskin and moccasins as this well-dressed family shows. 264 “Times here are easy… money plenty, the people much better satisfied.” —Dr. Ashbel Smith, December 22, 1837 GEOGRAPHY&HISTORY RICH HERITAGE There are many reasons why people take the big step of leaving their homes and moving to an unknown land— and Texas, during the years 1820 to 1860, witnessed all of them. The newly arriving immigrant groups tended to set- tle in one particular area, since it was easier to work with and live around people who spoke the same language and practiced the same customs. Many Mexicans came north while Texas was still a Spanish territory to set up farms on the fertile Coastal Plains. As A traditional band plays lively German the United States grew, more Native Americans, who had music at the Texas Folklife Festival. -

The Oil Drum | Book Review: Oil 101 http://www.theoildrum.com/node/5340 Book Review: Oil 101 Posted by Robert Rapier on April 28, 2009 - 2:00pm Topic: Supply/Production Tags: book review, morgan downey, oil market, oil production, refineries [list all tags] Oil 101, by Morgan Downey, is without a doubt the most detailed and comprehensive book I have ever read on the oil industry. In fact, I am not aware that another book like this even exists. This is not an opinion piece, nor is it a peak oil book. It is a collection of factual information covering all aspects of the industry. From oil in the ground to product in the tanks (and everything in between) - this book contains everything you could ever want to know about the industry. I like to think I know quite a bit about different areas of the industry, but I still managed to learn a lot from this book. It doesn't matter if you are a complete novice or already know quite a bit about the industry; there is something for everyone in this book. Downey displays a deep understanding across all sectors of the industry. For instance, if I didn't know better I would have guessed that the refining chapter was written by someone who had spent an entire career in the refining industry. The only books on refining that I have read that were more comprehensive were those written specifically as technical guides for running a refinery. Other areas are covered in similar detail. There is no aspect of the industry left uncovered. -

Vol. 57 Spring 2019 Number 1 Presidential Politics in the Republic of Texas By Charles Swanlund Presidential politics in the Republic of Texas were notably rau cous and contentious. For the most part, issues did not play a huge role in the politics of the Republic, but personalities did. Campaigns largely consisted of what one observer of the Texas election of 1841 described as being “a glorious orgy of name calling”, and on at least one occasion, the vitriol flew so fast and furious that one candidate was moved to challenge the other to a duel during the campaign! With the exception of the dueling aspect, a time traveler who ob served the recent U.S. presidential election might well consider that the 2016 presidential race had been conducted with the utmost in civility and grace by comparison to the “full contact” nature of pres idential politics as practiced in the Republic.
