His father also made a valuable contribution to Welsh music, composing numerous songs, anthems and hymn tunes, including 'Capel y Ddol'. Haydn Jones became a member of Merioneth County Council in 1889 and was its Chairman in 1890. He was elected Liberal MP for Merionethshire from 1910 to 1945 and received a knighthood in 1937. In 1903, Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru = The National Library of Wales Tudalen | Page 3 GB 0210 HAYNES Sir Haydn Jones Papers, he married Barbara, daughter to Lewis D. Jones, an ironmonger and quarry owner in Chicago. In 1911, the Aberdovey Slate Company was seeking to sell Abergynolwyn Quarry, the village and the Tal-y-llyn Railway. Haydn Jones bought the property himself and became the sole director of The Abergynolwyn Slate and Slab Company Limited. In 1935, he purchased the Aberllefenni Quarry and changed its name in 1956 to the Aberllefenni Slate Quarries Limited. Decline in demand spelled the end for the quarry. • Music and 'Magnetism'– a Celebration of Wales
PRESS RELEASE Thursday 5th July 2018 MUSIC AND ‘MAGNETISM’– A CELEBRATION OF WALES’ PIONEERING FEMALE COMPOSER BBC National Orchestra Wales performs Nocturne, by Morfydd Owen for the first time at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall Today, the rights of women and feminist causes are leading the news agenda, but at the turn of the 20th Century, a similar pioneering movement was underway. Set against the rise of the Suffragettes and calls for greater rights for women, young Welsh composer Morfydd Llwyn Owen took the musical world by storm. To celebrate the talent of such a pivotal figure in Welsh music, on 20th July as part of BBC Proms, BBC NOW will commemorate the centenary of Morfydd Owen’s death on 7 September 1918, aged 26, by performing her music at the Royal Albert Hall conducted by Principal Conductor Thomas Søndergård. The chosen work is Nocturne, for which Morfydd was awarded the Charles Lucas Silver Medal at the Royal Academy of Music in 1913. It will be the first time that Nocturne will be included in the BBC Proms programme. Morfydd Owen’s legacy lives on and has transcended more than just music. She moved to London in 1912 to study composition at the Royal Academy of Music, at a time when it was widely recognised to be very difficult for women to succeed and even more challenging for a provincial woman like Morfydd. However, she rose above the cultural and societal constraints of the time, making it much easier for other women to follow in her footsteps.

  • The Steam Locomotive Table, V1
The Steam Locomotive Table, v1 If you’re reading this; you either like steam trains, or want to know more about them. Hopefully, either way, I can scratch your itch with this; a set of randomizer/dice-roll tables of my own making; as inspired by some similar tables for tanks and aircrafts. Bear with me, I know not everyone knows the things I do, and I sure know I don’t know a lot of things other train enthusiasts do; but hopefully the descriptions and examples will be enough to get anyone through this smoothly. To begin, you’ll either want a bunch of dice or any online dice-rolling/number generating site (or just pick at your own whim); and somewhere or something to keep track of the details. These tables will give details of a presumed (roughly) standard steam locomotive. No sentinels or other engines with vertical boilers; no climax, shay, etc specially driven locomotives; are considered for this listing as they can change many of the fundamental details of an engine. Go in expecting to make the likes of mainline, branchline, dockyard, etc engines; not the likes of experiments like Bulleid’s Leader or specific industry engines like the aforementioned logging shays. Some dice rolls will have uneven distribution, such as “1-4, and 5-6”. Typically this means that the less likely detail is also one that is/was significantly less common in real life, or significantly more complex to depict. For clarity sake examples will be linked, but you’re always encouraged to look up more as you would like or feel necessary.

  • 29) Blaenau Ffestiniog and District the Town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, Until
    29) Blaenau Ffestiniog and district The town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, until recently carefully avoided by tourists and neatly excluded by the National Park boundary, was the third great centre of the slate quarrying industry in Gwynedd. Indeed the town owes its existence entirely to this industry; the former rural community was centred on the old village of Llan Ffestiniog 3½ miles to the south. The earliest quarry workings were started at what became the Diphwys Casson Quarry in about 1765, and the giants of Oakeley, Llechwedd and Maenofferen were soon well established or amalgamated from several smaller concerns. Some of the quarries are still in operation whilst others have only recently closed, and only now is some attempt being made to reclaim the desolation produced by continuous indiscriminate tipping of the mountains of grey slate waste which surrounded the town. Our plan shows the locations and their railway connections……. This picture looks out southwards over the town from high up in the Oakeley Slate Quarry workings; The L&NWR station and yard is at centre left, with the GWR premises in the distance above it. Across the fore- ground run the various narrow gauge Dinas branch routes. The former main route of the Festiniog Railway is rejoined by the new deviation line, described in the previous section, in the vicinity of Tan-y-Grisiau. The old station building here is largely demolished, but the goods shed with its wagon turntables adjacent may be noted. At the north end a branch diverges to the left up an incline, whence it can be followed to the lakeside slate quarries of Cwmorthin (680465) and Conclog higher up the valley.

  • The Railway Series Books by the Rev'd Wilbert V Awdry
The Awdry Connection with the Talyllyn Railway. The Rev. Wilbert Awdry inherited an interest in railways from his father, the Rev. Vere Awdry, and together with his brother George, became a keen railway modeller. His first book in what was to become “The Railway Series” had been published in 1945, and by 1951 he had written four more. In February that year, someone knowing his interests, sent him an article which had appeared in the Birmingham Mail entitled “EIGHT MILES OF RAILWAY TO PLAY WITH – AND REAL TRAINS - FOR £1 A YEAR”. That railway was the Talyllyn Railway, and Wilbert’s interest was aroused sufficiently to apply for membership of the newly formed Preservation Society: his receipt was numbered 79. Coincidentally, Wilbert had a distant cousin Frank who lived in Tywyn. They had never met, but Wilbert and George had visited Frank’s sisters in Clevedon, Somerset, and had heard stories about the ‘somewhat wayward little railway’ in Tywyn. In August 1952 Wilbert, together with his wife Margaret, son Christopher and daughters Veronica and Hilary, visited the Talyllyn Railway for the first time. On arrival, Wilbert and Christopher went straight to Wharf Station to introduce themselves to Tom Rolt, the General Manager. Wilbert volunteered to do duty as a Guard during the second week of his holiday. The most memorable incident of the week was when he left the Refreshment Lady behind in the Booking Office at Abergynolwyn – the first of many events that Wilbert was to enshrine in future books. It was almost inevitable that, having become a regular visitor and volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway, Wilbert should find a way to write about it in his books.
