SumnerliesontheeasternpartofthemiddleportionofOxfordCounty.ItisboundedbyPeruonthenorth, Hartfordontheeast,Buckfieldonthesouth,andWoodstockandParisonthewest.Thegreatestlengthofthe townisnorth-westandsouth-eastabout11miles;anditswidthaveragesnearly5½.Throughalmostthewhole lengthofthetownrunstheWestBranchofTwenty-MileRiver,andtheEastBranchofthisriverformsthe easternboundaryline.Nearthisriveratthenorth-eastisLabradorPond,westofthecentreisPleasantPond, andinthesouth-easternpartofthetownisNorthPond,largestofthethree,havinganareaofaboutone-third ofasquaremile.SmallerareShagPondinthenorth-westcorner,andLittleLabradorintheeasternpartofthe town.BlackMountain,notedforitsblueberries,isanextensiveelevationinthenorthernpart;andSpenceHills onthesouth-westernline.Cushman’sHill,southofthecentre,andHedgehogHillinthesouth-east,arealso considerableelevations.Thesurfacegenerallyisunevenandbroken,butthesoilisgenerallyproductive.At JacksonVillage(WestSumnerpostoffice)areasaw-millforlonglumber,ashingle-mill,grist-mill, cooperage,etc.;andatEastSumneraresaw,shingleandgrist-mills,andvarioussmallmanufactures.Themain businessoftheinhabitantsisagricultural,inwhichtheyhavemetwithgoodsuccess,andthetowngenerally bearstheappearanceofthrift.TheF?mfordFallsandBuckfieldRailroadtouchesthesouth-easternpartofthe town,andhasastationnearEastSumner.TheGrandTrunkrailroadstationatWestParisisabout8milesfrom SumnerCentre.

ThistownwasformerlyonewithHartford;andthesesectionsborerespectivelythenamesofEastandWest Butterfield.OnJune13,1798,itwasseparatelyincorporatedunderitspresentnameinhonorofGovernor IncreaseSumner.ThefirstsettlerintownwasCharlesBisbee,fromPembroke,Mass.Thefirstsettlementin thesouth-eastpartwasmadeinthesameyearbyIncreaseRobinsonandNoahBosworth.Mostofthefirst settlerscamefromPlymouthCounty,Mass.,andwereRevolutionarysoldiers.Amongtheearliestwere IncreaseandJosephRobinson,SimeonBarrett,NoahBosworth,HezekiahStetson,JohnBriggs,JohnCrockett, BenjaminHeald,MesechKeen,BarneyJacksonandOliverCummings.Theseobtainedthetitlestotheirlands fromMassachusetts.OliverCummings,fromDunstable,Mass.,struckthefirstblowoftheaxeatwhatisnow thecentreofthetown.Forsomeyearsthesettlerswereobligedtocarrytheirgristupontheirbackstenmilesto amillinTurner,beingguidedbyaspottedlinethroughthewoods.Thefirstgristaswellasthefirstsaw-mill inthetownwaserectedbyIncreaseRobinsonin1783.

JAMESSBARRETT,shoemerchant,WallaWalla,wasborninSumner,Oxfordcounty,Maine,in1838.He wasrearedonafarminthatstate,receivingsucheducationasthepublicschoolsafforded.Onattaininghis majority,hewenttoMassachusettstolearntheartofmanufacturingshoes,andtwoyearslater(in1861)heset outbysteamertothePacificcoast.LocatinginminingregionsofCalifornia,hefollowedminingexclusively foraboutfiveyears.inApril,1867,however,hepurchasedtheStetson&Buckbootmanufacturing establishment,whichbusinessheconducted,togetherwithmining,forseveralyears,atonetimebeingabsent forabriefperiodonatripeast.Finallysellingoutin1875hemovedtoSanFransico,California,wherehe purchasedaninterestinabootandshoemanufactoryat1208Marketstreet.Shortlyafterwardheboughtthe remaininginterestandtheentirebusinesswasconductedbyhimuntilJuly,1878.

MrBarrettthenmovedtoWallaWallawherehepurchasedpropertyandopenedastoreforthemanufacture andsaleofbootsandshoes.Hehasdevotedhimselfassiduouslyeversincetothebuildingupandextendingof thisbusiness,employingattimesseveralmeninhismanufacturingindustry,thoughhealsohandlescustom- madegoods.Heisathoroughbusinessman,possessedoftheforesightandgoodjudgmentcharacteristicofthe successfulincommercialpursuits.Asamanandacitizen,hisstandinginthecommunityisofthehighest.He isaveryprominentOddFellow,havingbeenconnectedwiththatorderforfortyyears,andhavingpassed throughalltheofficesandreceivedallthehonorsinthegiftofthefraternity.MrBarrettwasmarriedinWalla WallainJanuary,1879,toCoraM.Parker,anativeofJay,Maine,andtheynowhavetwochildren,AnnieM andParker.

Mygrandfather,CaptainMatthewSherman,wasborninCharleston,Massachusetts,October11,1827.He diedJuly5,1898,inSanDiego.HeservedasMayorofSanDiegoduringTheyears1891and1892.Theyhad twochildren,MatthewB.Sherman,andFannyB.Sherman,mymother,whomarriedCharlesL.Sloane.

[AugustaJaneBarrettwasbornonApril17,1839,inEastSumner,Maine,onafarmthathadbelongedtoher anncestorssincetheAmericanRevoution.ShediedJanuary5,1913,atherhomeinSanDiego.]

WhenIwasaverysmallgirlIusedtosaythatwhenIgrewupIwasgoingtoCaliforniatoteachschool.When IwasgrownmydreamwasrealizedforIcametoCalifornia,andafterresidinginthevicinityofSanFrancisco forayearortwo,fortuneorfateledmystepstoSanDiego-theretotakechargeoftheonlyschoolinthe county.MyfriendsthouhtIwasgoingoutoftheworld,buttherewassomethingaboutthisfaraway,almost unknown,southerncountrythatseemedtohaveacharmforme.

OnSeptember1,1866,IleftSanFranciscoontheSteamer"Pacific,"CaptainThorn,Master;andonthe morningofSeptember4weroundedPointLomaandsteamedintoSanDiegoanddroppedanchoroffshorein thevicinityofwhatisnowknownasFStreet.Therewerenowharvesthenandwewereputintosmallboats androwedasneartheshoreaspossible,andthenthesailorswadedtherestoftheway,carryingthepassengers intheirarms,andlandingthemsafelyupondryland.

Therewasonevehicleuponthebeachawaitingourarrival,andinitItookmyseatandwasdriventoOld Town.ThesettlementwasatOldTown,aswhatisnowSanDiegowassimplytomethatmorningalong stretchofbrushcoveredland.ThehousesaroundthePlaza(OldTown)wereingoodrepair,andtheruinsone seesatthepresenttime(1890)werethriftylookingplacesandwerefilledwithpeople.Suchachange!It makesonesadtocontemplate.Therewereveryfewwomen,besidesthenativepopulation,lessthanadozen alltold.Theschoolchildrennumberedaboutforty,mostlyofSpanishorigin.

Therewerenosteamlaundriesinthosedays.MostofsuchworkwasdonebyIndianwomen.Theywouldtake theclothestothebedoftheSanDiegoRiverandthendiginthesanduntiltheyfoundwater,whichwasvery nearthesurface.Theywouldsitbythisminiaturewellandwashalldaylong.Iusedtosay,"Whatpatient creatures!"

Wehadmailonceaweek,andasteameronceamonth.OurmailwasbroughtbystagefromLosAngeles,and wassupposedtocomeanddepartonceeachweek,butsometimesitwouldbedelayedbecauseofstorms.It wasimpossibletocrossthestreams,astherewasnotabridgebetweenhereandLosAngeles.Sometimesin therainyseasonwereceivedourmailinaverywetcondition,butofcoursethatdidnothappenoften.We weresogladtoseethemailstagecomeweneverthoughtofmakinganycomplaints.

Therewasbutonechurch,theRomanCatholic,whereserviceswereheldoccasionally.Thesamechurch buildingandbellsarestillinuse.FatherUbachcamelateinthatsameyear,1866,andremainedpermanently. OnceeachmonthbeheldservicesintheEnglishlanguage,soIusedtoattendthemwhenIcouldunderstand.

ThefeastdayforSanDiegoisonthe8thdayofDecember,andhowtheyusedtocelebrate!Iwitnessedmy firstbullfightonthatday.ThePlazawasfencedinforthearena,theanimalsturnedlooseintheenclosure,and thenthefunbegan--iffunitcouldbecalled.Thisgenerallylastedtwoorthreedays,butthefestivitieskeptup untilaftertheNewYear,withthedifferentkindsofSpanishsports.Onecouldheartheviolinandguitarinall directions,fortheSpanishpeopleareveryfondofmusicanddancing.

AftermymarriagetoCaptain[Matthew]ShermaninMay,1867,IcametoNewTowntolive,asthisportion ofthetownwascalledatthattime.Myhusbandandmyselfweretheonlyinhabitants,ournearestneighbor beingfourmilesawayatOldTown.Therewerefourhouses,besidestheBarracks.TheBarracks,itmightbe interestingtoknow,wasframedinthestateofMaineandbroughtaroundCapeHorninasailingvesselandput upinSanDiego,Ithinkintheyear1852--soonafterCaliforniabecameapartoftheUnitedStates.InAprilof 1867"Father"[Alonzo]HortoncameandmadehispurchaseoflandandreturnedtoSanFrancisco.Inthe autumnofthesameyearourpopulationincreasedbytwo,anoldgentlemanandhiswife,sothatIhadonenear neighbor.

In1867our"fathers"atWashingtongottheideathatsmugglingwasbeingcarriedonatthisport.Ineverknew whatitwasthatwasbeingsmuggled.SotheysenttherevenuecutterRelianceforourprotection.Shesailed aroundtheHornandarrivedhereearlyin1868.Thevesselremainedhereanumberofmonths,butfindingthat therewasnothingforthemtodo,shewasorderedtoAlaska.

Iwillspeakofourwatersystem.Ofcoursewehadone.Theideahadalwaysprevailedthattherewasnowater tobehadinthisportionofSanDiego.ButduringtheCivilWarthesoldiersdugawellandfoundwaterata depthofabout24feet.ThelocationofthiswellwasbelowwhatisnowknownasKStreet,between14thand 15thStreets.Theyputupaprimitivewindmillandusedtohaulwaterinbarrels.Thiswasthewaythesoldiers attheBarracksweresuppliedwithwater.Ourownwatersystemwasaburroandtwo10-gallonkegs.These kegswerefasteneduponthebackofthelittleanimal.Wegavehimthenameof"PatientPeter,"hewasso patientandwise.Thislittlefellowusedtobringhisloadofwaterformorethanamile.Onedayastranger camealongandwastalkingwithmybusbandaboutthepossibilitiesoftheplace(SanDiego),andheasked, "Wheredoyougetyourwater?"Myhusband,inreply,said,"Iwillshowyouwherewegetit."Justthen PatientPetercameinview,ledbyanIndian,andmyhusbandcontinued,"Hereareourwater-works."This strangermusthaveleft,forweneversawhimafterward.

Asyouwillremember,"Father"HortoncametoSanDiegoandmadehispurchaseoflandandthenreturnedto SanFrancisco.Earlyin1868hereturnedwithhisfamilytoreside.Hesooncommencedthesurveyinlaying outthefuturecityofSanDiego.Nowandthenasettlercametomakethenewplacehishome.Onthe4thof JulyweheldapicnicinRoseCanyon,aboutfourmilesfromOldTown.Therewasastrangerinourmidstand ofcoursecuriositywasontiptoe,foritwassuchanunusualoccurrence,thatweallwondered.Hewasan EnglishmanandcamefromAustralia.Wesoonknewwhyhewasthere,forhebuiltastorebuildingonthe cornerofGandStateStreets,andopenedastore.Hisbill-headsreadinthisway:"J.Nash.General Merchandise.Establishedin1868.Population,23."

Ittakesplentyofcouragetoopenastoreundersuchconditions,butthatisthematerialthatpioneersaremade of.LaterMr.NashmovedtoFifthandIStreets.Aboutthesametime,CaptainDunnellscamewithhisfamily andpurchasedoneofthefourhousesabovementioned,situatedatthecornerof"F"andStateStreets,and openedahotelcalledthe"NewSanDiegoHotel."Webegantofeelbythistime,withastoreandahotel,even ifourpopulationwasonly23,weweregettingtobequiteacommercialtown.

Inthespringof1868webuiltahouseandmovedintoitinthemonthofMay.Thenmynearestneighborwas overamileaway,astherewerenobuildingsofanydescriptiononHorton'sAdditionatthattime.Webuiltthe housebeforethestreetswerelaidout,butwewerefortunateenoughtobuildthehouseuponalotandnotin thestreet.Weweremoreunfortunatewiththewellwehaddug,however,forlaterwefoundittobeinthe street,andwehadthetroubleoffillingitupagain.Thishouseisstillstandingonthenorthwestcornerof19th andIStreets.

OnNovember4,1868,amemorabledayforthewholecountry,foritwasthePresidentialelection,thedaythat GeneralGrantwaselectedPresidentoftheUnitedStates,anditwasaninterestingdayforSanDiego,asitwas steamerday,andthesteamerarrivedonthatmorning.Everyonewhocouldwenttoseeit.Onthisparticular morningthereweremorepassengersthanusual,andamongthemanEpiscopalminister.Heestablisheda Mission,andourfirstProtestantserviceswereheldintheBarracksthefollowingSunday.Everythingwasvery primitive.Averycommontable,coveredwithawhitecloth,servedforthealtar,andourseatswereboards restinguponboxesandoilcans.Mrs.Dunnellswastheproudpossessorofamusicalinstrument,amelodian,I thinkitwascalled,whichshekindlyloaned.Itwastakentotheplaceofmeetinginawheelbarrowand returnedinthesameway.Theserviceofthechurchhasneverbeenmorebeautifultomethanitwasinthese plainsurroundings.Itwasnotverylongbeforewehadabuildingerectedinwhichtheserviceswereheld,and thefollowingyearnearlyalldenominationshadtheirchurchsocietiesorganized.Twoyearslaterour EpiscopalmissionhelditsfirstSundaySchoolChristmasfestival,Therewasneitherpaintnorwhitewash,but wecoveredthestuddingandrafterswithgreenboughsthatgrewonthebills.Therewereonlyeightscholars, andfourofthatnumberbelongedtotheRector'sfamily.Wehadaverysmallorgan,andthechildrensang theirChristmascarolsandenjoyedtheChristmastree.Theolderfolksenjoyedit,too.

OnChristmasEve,1868,wehadaChristmastree,andthereweregiftsandgoodwishesforeveryone.J.Nash, ourmerchant,gavealltheladieslivinginthenewsettlementmaterialtomakeacalicodress.Ialwaysthought itwasverygenerous,forcommoncalicosoldatthattimefortwentycentsperyard.Acollectionwastakenup topurchaseabellfortheschoolwehopedsoontoestablish.Wehadabountifulsupperandclosedwith dancing.Everybodywasinvited,andeverybodycamethatcouldbethere.

Duringtheyears1868and1869wemadequitearapidstrideforward.AstagelinetoFortYumawas inauguratedbytheGovernment,andtheSanDiegoUnionwasfirstpublished,bothwithofficesatOldTown. TheCourtalsoconvenedatthelatterplace.Wehadmailservicetwiceinsteadofonceaweek,andsteamers twiceamonth.APostOfficewasestablishedatNewTowncalledSouthSanDiego.Yousee,wewerea suburbofOldTown.

WepetitionedtotheSupervisorsforaSchoolDistrict,andsucceededingettingone,J.S.Mannasse& Company,merchants,gavelumber.Wegavelandandmoneyandbuiltaschoolhouseonthecornerof21st andNStreet.Wehiredayounggirltotakechargeoftheschool,andpaidherwithmoneysubscribedforthe purpose.Thefollowingyearanappropriationwasmadeinregardtoschoolmoney.Idonotrememberthe exactnumberofpupils,buttherewerelessthanadozen.Thatwasthebeginningofourschoolsystem,and whenIseethechildrencomingoutoftheschoolbuildingsnow,Ithinktowhatlargeproportionssmallthings cangrow.

InMarch,1869,Igaveapartyformynieceonherbirthdayandinvitedallthelittlegirls.Therewerenine, includingtherecipientoftheparty.Onelittlegirlsaidtome,"Mrs.Sherman,I'vecomeallaroundtheworldto gethere.NodoubtitdidseemaverylongwayfromUnionandBStreetsto19thandIStreets,withnodirect road.Ourstreetshadbeensurveyed,buthadnotbeentravelled,andastheywerecoveredwithbrush,they werenotveryeasywalking.Oneofthegirls,nowgrown-up,saidtomenotverylongagothatsheremembers sowellwhatalovelytimetheyhad.ThatwasthefirstsocialeventheldinNewSanDiegoforthe"younger set."

OnthefourthofJuly,1869,wehadacelebration.TheexerciseswereheldinawarehouseatthefootofFifth Street,wherethePacificCoastSteamshipCompany'sdepotisnowlocated.ItwasasmallbuildingbuiltbyMr. Horton,andwasafterwardsusedbyA.Pauly&Sonsasastoreforgeneralmerchandise.Wehadavery modestprocession:Mr.G.W.B.McDonaldwasPresidentoftheDay;ReverendSydneyWilburmadethe prayer.CaptainMatthewShermanreadtheDeclarationofIndependence,andDanielCleveland,Esq.,was OratoroftheDay.Wehadgoodsingersinthosedays,thesameasnow,andthepatrioticsongsweresungwith trulypatrioticspirit.Ourcelebrationwasenthusiastic.Itwasnotsuchalargegatheringbutitwasananimated one.Thefactthatwewerehere,inthisfarawaytownofSanDiego,didnotkeepusfromfeelingourjoyand expressingitattheanniversaryofournation'sbirth.Tablesstoodononeside,spreadwithmanygoodthingsto eat,andtherewasplentyforall.Afterthedinnerwasserved,thetableswereclearedandweindulgedina goodoldfashioneddance.

Ourcelebrationlastthreedays;theseconddayatOldTown,withhorseracingandfancyriding,andthethird dayatMonumentCity.AndfortheinformationofthosewhoneverheardofMonumentCity,Iwillsayitwas situatedsomewhereinthevicinityofwhatisnowSouthSanDiego.

TheCityofSanDiegogaveaprincelydomainofland,andthecitizensgenerallysubscribedveryliberally.In Washington,abillforthisrailwaywasbeforeCongress,andonMarch3rd,1871,thebillpassedbothhouses andwassignedbythePresident.Thetelegraphhadbeenextendedtoourplace(SanDiego)andthenewscame overthewires.Ofcourse,wewerejubilant!Wecouldalmosthearthelocomotivewhistle.Thefollowingyear in1872TomScottcamehere,andhewasgivenaverywarmwelcome.Amassmeetingwasheldandplans madeforthefutureandeverythingseemedverybrightandpromising.WefeltthatSanDiego'sprosperitywas assured.Thefollowingyeargroundwasbrokenfortheroad,andtheroadbedgradedforashortdistance.But alas,themoneypanicinNewYorkstoppedallfurtherprogressandwefellbackintotheoldgroove,andhad tostartagaintobuildarailroad.

Inthemeantime,alocalcompanyhadbeenorganizedtobuildarailroadtoSanBernardino.Groundwas brokenin1872andabouttenmilesofroadbedgraded.Forsomereasonitwasneverfinished.

Fromnowonweimprovedslowly,andalthoughwemissedtherailroad,weneverlostfaith.Thencamethe timewhentheSantaFebuiltintothecity,andalthoughitwasnotwhatwehopedtohave-adirectlinetothe East,yetitgaveussomewayofcommunicatingwiththeoutsideworld.

Thencametheboomin1886,withitsinfluxofpeopleandexcitement.Improvementswerenowrapid,andSan Diegocommencedtotakeonitspresentaspect.

AfewmonthsafterarrivinginSanDiego,shemarriedCaptainMatthewSherman,andmovedwithhimto NewSanDiego,wherehewasCollectorofCustoms,stationedattheBarracks.InJune,1867,onlyamonth afterAlonzoE.HortonpurchasedHorton'sAddition,Shermanbought160acresadjoiningHorton'sontheeast. ThisbecameknownasSherman'sAddition,andisboundedby15th,24th,MarketandCommercial.

TheSherman'sfirsthome,at19thandJ,stillstands,alteredandchangedinappearance,at418-2219thStreet. Theirlasthomewasat22ndandMarket,alsostillstanding,butremodeledastheShermanApartments.The ShermanSchoolat22ndandIslandisnamedforCaptainSherman,whodonatedlandandmoneyforthefirst schoolinNewSanDiego.CaptainShermanwasamemberoftheBoardofSupervisors,1885-1886,andwas MayorofSanDiego,1891-92.

ThesememoirsweredictatedbyAugustaBarrettShermantoherson,MatthewBarrettSherman,in1890,and provideagraphiceyewitnessaccountofthebeginningofNewSanDiego.Thememoirswererecentlygivento theSanDiegoHistoricalSocietybyMrs.Sherman'sgranddaughter,MissFrancesA.Sloane,amemberofthe Society.

Inthe1860’s,CaptainMatthewShermanwasoneofthepioneerlanddevelopersandcivicleadersofSan Diego,California.Shermanseemstohavebeenamodestman;characterizedbyasenseofbalanceand restraintthatwasreflectedinhisciviclife,hisfinancialactivities,andhishandsomehome.

MatthewwasborninCharleston,Massachusettson11October1827.HeenlistedintheNavyattheageof thirteenandservedontheU.S.S.ColumbusandlaterontheU.S.S.Independence.HefirstcametoCalifornia in1847,whentheIndependencelandedbrieflyatMontereyduringtheMexicanWar.Hereturnedsometimein thenextdecadeasacivilian.

DuringtheCivilWar,ShermanservedasLieutenantandlaterCaptainofthe4thInfantryRegimentofthe CaliforniaVolunteers.In1862,hewasstationedinSanDiego,andlikeditsowellthatafterhisdischargefrom theArmyon30November1865,hecamebacktosettlepermanently.Uponhisarrival,CaptainSherman becametheCustomsCollector,apositionheheldforthenextfouryears.

On10May1867,MatthewShermanmarriedAugustaJaneBarrettanothertransplantedNewEnglander.She wasbornon17April1839,inEastSumner,Maineonafarmthathadbelongedtoherfamilysincethe RevolutionaryWar.AsachildshedreamedofgoingtoCaliforniatoteachschool.Afterrealizingthatdream andteachingforayearortwoinSanFrancisco,AugustafoundherselfdrawntotheSanDiegoareawhereshe metandmarriedMatthewSherman.

Aftertheirmarriage,MatthewboughtfromtheCityTrusteesa160-acreplotoflandfor50centsanacre. Sherman’sAddition(orShermanHeightsasitwascalledbecauseofitselevation)overlookedtheflatlandsof whatisnowdowntownSanDiego.HeandAugustaweretheonlyinhabitantsuntilthefallof1867when anothercouplemovedintothearea.Theirfirsthomeconsistedofasmallhouseandthe"Barracks."The BarrackshadbeenframedinthestateofMaineandwerebroughtaroundCapeHornonashipandwereputup about1852.Inthespringof1868,MatthewandAugustabuiltasmallhouseandhadmovedintoitbyMay. Thehouseisstillstandingatthenorthwestcornerof19thandIStreetsaccordingtotheSanDiegoHistorical Society.

AftermovingtothissectionofSanDiego,Shermanwasdeterminedtomakeitalivableplace.Manyregarded himasa"crazydarnedfool"becausehewantedtosinkawell,putupawindmill,andraisevegetablesand sheeponhisland.TheprevailingideaatthetimewasthattherewasnowatertobehadinthispartofSan Diego.But,duringtheCivilWarthesoldiershaddugawellandfoundwateratadepthofabout24feet. Withinafewyearsothershadfollowedhisexample,sinkingdeepwellsfromwhichtheyobtainedgoodwater fortheirgardens.

Shermansubdividedhislandin1869andsoonrecoupedhisinitialinvestmentashesoldofflots.Infact,land wassellingsoquicklyinSanDiegothattheCityTrustees(ofwhichShermanwasbythistimeamember) decidedthatitwasimperativethatsomeofthelandbesetasideforpublicpurposesbeforeitwastoolate.In October1869,theCityTrusteesarrangedforthededicationofa1400acreCityParkanda200-acrecemetery; itwasMrs.Shermanwhoselectedthename,MountHope,forthecemetery.Inaddition,theSherman’s donatedlandforoneofthefirstschoolsandlatergavemorelandforamoresubstantialbuilding.

OneofSherman’sgreatesthopes,onehesharedwithmanyotherSanDiegoresidents,wastobringadirect transcontinentalraillinktoSanDiego.Asearlyas1869,Shermanbeganhiseffortsbyestablishinga committeetosolicitgiftsoflandandtoenticetheMemphisandElPasorailroadtolocateitsterminusinSan Diego.Thatprojectdidnotmaterialize.However,thefollowingyearShermanandothersorganizedtheSan DiegoandLosAngelesrailroad.ItwasapapercorporationwithalandgrantfromtheCityTrustees,which theyhopedwouldlureatranscontinentalrailroad.

In1871,ShermanwenttoWashingtontolobbyforpassageoflegislationcharteringtheTexasandPacificto buildaraillinefromTexastoCalifornia.WhileinWashington,CongressmanJohnA.Loganworkedoutthe finaldetailsofthebillthatprovidedFederalgovernmentlandgrantsandsubsidies.AfterpassageoftheTexas andPacificbillin1871,TomScott,presidentoftherailroadcametoCaliforniawherecityofficialsand businessleadersfromSanFrancisco,LosAngeles,andSanDiegoentertainedhim.Hefinallyagreedto establishtheterminusoftheTexasandPacificinSanDiegoinexchangefortitletootherrailroadcorporations suchastheSanDiegoandLosAngeles.

Thefollowingyeargroundwasbrokenfortheroad,andtheroadbedgradedforashortdistance.But,theTexas andPacificnevercompletedtheraillineasthecompanywasruinedbythestockmarketcrashof1873.San DiegowentintohibernationforthenextdecadeandMatthewShermanretiredtohisfarmintheElCajon valleytoraisezinfandelgrapes.

In1885,therecentlyorganizedCaliforniaSouthernrailroadmadeconnectionswiththeSantaFe,runninga linefromSanDiegotoSanBernardino.Atlast,SanDiegohadthetranscontinentalconnection.Thepopulation tripledandlandsalesboomed.Shermancameoutofhissemi-retirement,soldhisElCajonfarmandvineyard, andhadplansdrawnupforalargenewhomeinShermanHeights.

Thenewhomewasatwo-story,11-roomstructure.Itwasdescribedas"finelyfurnished"andcost$15,000. Sincethiswasseveraltimeswhattheaverageresidencecostinthosedays,Shermanandhisfamily(including daughterFannie1872-1911andson,Matthew1878-?)hadahandsomeandcomfortablehomethatwas characterizedbyanairofdignifiedsimplicityandclassicalbalance.

Afterthecollapseofthebuildingboomofthe1880’s,SanDiegosettleddownforanotherperiodofslumber. ShermanhowevercontinuedtoplayanactiveroleinSanDiego’sciviclife,servingasMayorfrom1891-92.

OneofthemostcolorfuleventsduringhistermofofficewasthefirstcelebrationinhonorofCabrillo’s landingatSanDiego.The350thanniversaryofthatoccasionwasmarkedbyadramaticre-enactmentofthe event.ManualCabral,afishermanfromLaPlayawhoportrayedCabrillo,wasattiredinacostumethat includedvelvetkneebreechesandanostrich-featherhat.Hisshipwastolandatoneofthetown’spiers,but becauseofdelays,itdidnotarriveuntilthetidehadgoneout.Asaresult,theshipbecamestuckonashoal somedistanceaway.Inthemeantime,theexcitedcrowdgatheredontothewharfandinthethrong,the handrailbrokecausingmanyofthefrock-coatedofficials,includingMayorSherman,tospillintothemud. Fortunately,theremainderofthecelebrationwasmoresuccessful.

MatthewShermandiedon5July1898.PraisedasoneofSanDiego’searliestresidents,hewasdescribedasa manofstrongcharacter,yet"gentleinmannerandapproachable…Hewasamanwhohadmanyfriendsand fewenemies."Hiswife,Augusta,diedin1913andwasburiedbesidehiminMountHopeCemeterywhose nameandlocationowedsomuchtotheShermans.

AmongtherepresentativebusinessmenandasoneoftheleadingcitizensofUmatillaCountystandstheman whosenameinitiatesthisparagraphandwhoselifeofexcellentachievementinthecommercialrealmsof easternOregonhasbeenworthyofemulation,whilehisunsulliedreputationandintrinsicmoralworthare quitecommensuratetherewith,havingdisplayedcharacteristicuprightnessandmaintainedahighhonor throughouthislongcareerinthiscounty.

HewasborninOxfordCounty,Maine,onJune21,1852,toJ.S.andElizabethM.Barrows,nativesalsoofthe PineTreestate.Hiseducationaltrainingwasreceivedinhisnativeplaceexcepttwoyearsofserviceinthe shoeshopsofMassachusetts,followingwhich,in1872,hecrossedtheplainstoCalifornia,thencameto Weston,UmatillaCounty.HereheengagedforwageswithJohnAdamsinwoolgrowing,andthehorse business,continuingthereuntilheacquiredsufficientsfundstoembarkinthesamebusinessforhimself.

Inthespringof1883hesoldhissheep,retaininghishorsebusiness,andtookupthehardwareandinplement business,andtothesuccessfulprosecutionofthishehasdevotedhimselfcontinouuslysince,havingatthe presenttimealargeandlucrativepatronage,whichisfullymeritedbyhiscarefulbusinessmethodsand watchfulnessfortheinterestsofhiscustomersandstricthonestyinallhisdealings.

InadditiontohishandsomeAthenapropertyhehas2,000acresofland,halfpastureandtimberlandandthe balancefarmedtowheat.HeisalsooneoftheincorporatorsoftheFirstNationalBankofAthena,inwhich townhisbusinessiscarriedon,andontheorganizationofthisbankhewaselecteditsfirstpresident,andheld thatofficetwotermsandisatthepresenttimedirectorofthesame.

HewasoneoftheincorporatorsoftheAthenaFlouringMillCompanyandhasbeeneitherpresidentorvice- presidentofthecompanysinceitsinception,andisnowoneofthedirectors.Twicehavethepeoplecalledhim toactaschiefexecutiveofhishomecity,andhehasfrequentlyservedascouncilman,everbringingtobear thesamewisdomandfaithfulnessthatarecharacteristicofhiminallhisprivateoperations.

Hehasalsofreelygivenhistimeandtalenttotheadvancementofheinterestsoftheschoolsofthetownby actingasdirector.FraternallyheisassociatedwiththeW.ofW.,theK.ofP.andtheK.O.T.M.

November,1877themarriageofMr.BarrettandMissJennieE.Mayswassolemnizedandtothemhavebeen borntwochildren,AretaandHenryA.,thelatterbeinginthestorewithhisfatherandholdingthepositionof secretaryofthecompany.Mr.Barrettisoneofthemostsubstantialbusinessmenoftheentiresectionandhas sodemeanedhimselfthathehaswonandretainstheconfidenceandesteemoftheentirecommunity.

CHARLESA.BARRETT.-ThereisnogoodreasonwhythepeopleofOregonshouldnotbeasstate.They areaselectionfromtheresidentsofcommunitiesfromallpartsofAmerican,andevenfromEurope, possessingthecultureandintelligenceoftheirnativeregionswiththesuper-addedexperienceofWesternlife. Andwethinkthattheworkofsettlementanddevelopmentdonebyourpeoplewouldbenodiscredittoanyin theworld.

Mr.BarrettisfromMaine,wherehewasbornin1852.AfterafewyearsinMassachusettsandalsoonthe PacificcoastinCalifornia,hearrivedinUmatillacounty,Oregon,in1872,-ayoungmanfullofcourageand vigor.HislifeforsixyearswasonWildHorsecreekintheemploymentofMr.J.F.Adams.Whiletherehe helpeddriveoverlandtoCheyenneoneofthosebandsofcattlewhichweresonumerousinOregonatthat time.In1880hecametoCenterville,andundertooktheraisingofsheepandtherearingofhorses,retaininghis sheepinterestuntilquiterecently.In1883headdedtohisotheroccupationsthehardwareandimplementstore ofKassonSmith,andisstilloperatinginthisline.Hisrealestateisquiteconsiderable,-farmof160acresnear Weston;twohundredacresonPinecreek,tenmilesnorthofCenterville;adfourresidenceandtwobusiness lotsonMainstreetinCenterville.Ononeoftheseresidencelotshehasadwelling-housecostingfivethousand dollars.Thisisoneofthebestinthecounty.Thefire-proofbrickbuildingtwenty-fivebyseventyfeetinwhich hedoesbusinessalsobelongstohim.Thismakesathriftyshowingforeightyears'residenceinthetown.

Mrs.BarrettwasformerlytoMr.BarrettoccurredinWeston.HermarriagetoMr.Barrettoccurredin1877. Theyhavetwochildren,Arcta,theelder,andaboy,Henry.

Oneofthesolidmenfinancially,themanwhoseportraitlooksfromtheoppositepageisnolessasubstantial pillarofsocietyineveryinterestcalculatedtobenefitthecommunity.

ThepartywasintheFiresideRoomofFirstBaptistChurch--thechurchwherehermother,thelateJennie MaysBarrett,wasachartermemberandwhereshehasbeenamembersinceshewas14. missBarrettwasbornatWestonbutherfather,CharlesABarrett,movedhisfamilytoAthenain1890.Areta andherbrother,thelateHenryABarrett,attendedAthenaschool.Shewasamemberofthefirstgraduating class--sixgirlsandoneboy--in1897.

AretaandHenrywenttotheNormalSchoolatWeston,commutingbyhorseandcart.Shelaughinglyrecalled thedayhedashedlatetoclassinhisoveralls;he'dtakentoolongattheliverystablewhereheleftthehorse eachday.Usuallytheytookabaleofhayalongforhorsefeedandashovelwasstandardequipmentduringthe wintermonths.Snowdriftedintothehollow,presentsiteoftheviningstationontheAthena-Westonhighway.

AfternormalschoolsheattendedMcMinnvilleCollege(laterLinfield)wherehermotherhadbeenoneofthe firststudents.Itwasalongjourney--byboatfromUmatillaLandingtoPortland,thenontoMcMinnville whenMrs.Barrettenrolledin1875.BythetimeAretamatriculatedtherewasrailtransportationtothe WillametteValley.

AftercollegeMissBarrettreturnedtothenormalschoolatWestonwhereshesubstituedasvoiceteacherfora time.Shewasactiveinalumniaffairswhichincludedareunionannuallyduringthecommunity'sPioneer Picnic.Finalgatheringwassomesixyearsago.

MissBarretttaughtpianofor20yearsinAthenaandgreetedmanyofherformerpupilsattheSundayparty. Inheryoungerdayssheshared,withherbrother,aloveforhorsesandcompetedinraces,mostlyshort distanceevents,sherecalls.Hertrophiesincludedasilvercup,manyribbonsandanIndianblanket.

MissBarrett'shome,whereshehaslivedsince1937,isfurnishedwithhandsomantiques.

A"whatnot"shelfisoneofthefewpiecesoffurnitureherparentshadwhentheysetuphousekeeping.Wall shelvesholdhercollectionofcommemorativeplates.

Herinterestinhistorywasprobablyinheritedfromhermotherwhokeptadetailedjournalandalsohadtraced thefamilyhistorybacktothe1600s.AstaunchRepublican,shehadbeenaghasttofindthat"Old,"aDemocraticpresident,wasarelative!

MissBarrettnotonlyhasagreatstoreoffamilyhistory,butmanyofthirdandfourthgenerationfamilieshave cometoherseekinglinksintheirpast.Herrecallofnames,placesandeventsisphenomenal.

AleadingsheepandhorseraiserofUmatillacounty,livesintheedgeoftheBluemountainsneartheUmatilla reservation.HisparentswereJosephandAreeteAdams,ofFranklincounty,Maine.Hewasborninthetown ofJay,Maine,July20,1835,andhassevenbrothersandsisters,CharlesB.,HenryC.,JosephW.,HelenM., MercyH.,AddaB.,andBertha.HisboyhooddayswerespentinthequietofNewEnglandfarmlife,attending thepublicschoolatintervals,anddividingtwoofthelateryearsbetweenattendanceatanacademyand workingonthefarm.In1858heresolvedtomakeaboldstroketobetterhiscondition.

Hetherefore,cametothiscoastbythePanamarout,andmadehiswaytoUmpquavalley,Oregon,wherehe beganlifeasaschoolteacher.Hetaughtfouryears,investinghisearningsinlivestock,thuslayingthe foundationofhisfortune.

Hethendevotedhimselftothestockbusiness.In1865hecametoUmatillacountyandlocatedhispresent home,containing250acres,whichformsoneoftheillustrationsofthiswork.J.F.Adams,RobertThompson andJacobFrazierwerethepioneersinthatsectionofthecounty.Mr.Adamsconfinedhisattentiontosheep until1870,whenhebeganraisinghorsesalso.Hisbandsofsheepcontainfrom6,000to10,000,andhishorses grazeonthehillsinlargenumbers.In1868hemarriedMissSusanF.Fry,aladyfromIndianapolis,Ind.Their childrenare:JohnR.,bornJanuary15,1880;GeorgeH.,July27,1881.

Havinglivedsolongonthefrontier,Mr.Adamshashadmanyadventuresandexperienceincidenttosucha life,includinganarrowescapefromthehostileBannocks,whentheycameuponthereservationin1878and murderedseveralpeople.Hepossessesinamarkeddegreethequalitiesofenergyandactivityrequiredto conducthisbusinesssuccessfully,andisreconedamongthemostenterprisingcitizensofUmatillaCounty. ***********

ATHENA–LeonardGeisselwastheofficialbicyclerepairmanforatleastthreegenerationsofAthena’s youngsters.

Hecouldalwaysbecountedontofixaflatbiketireorrepairabrokenbike.

AndtheseserviceswereofferedbyGeisselforfree.

Lastweek,heendedthatcareerwhenhelockedthedoorsoftheAthenaServiceStationforthelasttime. Geissel,68,retiredafterdoingbusinessonthecornerofFourthAvenueandMainStreetformorethan37 years.

Inadditiontohisavocationofrepairingbicycles,Geissel,overtheyears,becamethesemiofficialcrossing guardformanychildrenontheirwayhomefromschool.

Nearlyeveryday,hecouldbeseentakingtimeoutfromhisbusinesstohelpakindergartenermakeitacross MainStreet.

Healsoactedasanarbitratoronmanyoccasionsforthearea’syoungsters,andhistelephonewasalways availablejustfortheasking.

Geissel,Athena’srecipientofthisyear’sManoftheYearaward,couldalwaysbecountedontobuyraffle ticketsorcandyfromareachildren.

Twoyear’sago,agroupofthird-gradersmadeGeisselbirthdaycardswith"Iloveyou"writtenonthem.

Onesaid,"HappyBirthdayLeonardGasStation".

OnGeissel’slastdayinbusiness,hearrivedatthestationtofindthattheoutsidewallshadbeenpaperedwith drawingsandnotesfromthechildren.

Therewasalsoabigsignwhichsaid,"ThanksfortheHelpingHand"

Inadditiontothetown’schildren,Geisseliswelllikedbyeveryonehecomesincontactwith,accordingtohis friends.

"He’stheonlymanintheworldIknowofwhodoesn’thaveanenemy,"saysAthenalawyerDonDuncan.

Hisstationbecametheunofficialmeetingplaceformanyofthearea’scitizens,accordingtoDuncan.

Geisselwouldalwayshaveafreshsupplyofpeanutsavailableonanyday.

Farmers,lawyers,insurancemen,huntersorfishermencouldbeseenwithGeisselhuddledaroundthestation’s pot-belliedstove,hullingpeanutsandexchangingcommentaryontheday’scurrentevents,Duncansays.

"Thewholetown’sgoingtomisshim,"thelawyersays.

GeisselmovedtoAthenawithhisfamily62yearsago.

FiftyofthoseyearswerespentworkingonMainStreet.Firstatthedrugstore,thenatthebankandfinallythe servicestationbusiness.

Giesselsaystheonlythingheissureofabouthisretirementisthathewon’thavetogetupeachmorningand comedowntothestationtoopenitup.

Hesayshemighttakeavacationbecausehehasn’thadonein14years.
