NotesforSIMEONBARRETT: http://history.rays-place.com/me/sumner-me.htm HistoryofSumner,Maine From AGazetteerofthe StateofMaine ByGeo.J.Varney PublishedbyB.B.Russell,57Cornhill, Boston1886 SumnerliesontheeasternpartofthemiddleportionofOxfordCounty.ItisboundedbyPeruonthenorth, Hartfordontheeast,Buckfieldonthesouth,andWoodstockandParisonthewest.Thegreatestlengthofthe townisnorth-westandsouth-eastabout11miles;anditswidthaveragesnearly5½.Throughalmostthewhole lengthofthetownrunstheWestBranchofTwenty-MileRiver,andtheEastBranchofthisriverformsthe easternboundaryline.Nearthisriveratthenorth-eastisLabradorPond,westofthecentreisPleasantPond, andinthesouth-easternpartofthetownisNorthPond,largestofthethree,havinganareaofaboutone-third ofasquaremile.SmallerareShagPondinthenorth-westcorner,andLittleLabradorintheeasternpartofthe town.BlackMountain,notedforitsblueberries,isanextensiveelevationinthenorthernpart;andSpenceHills onthesouth-westernline.Cushman’sHill,southofthecentre,andHedgehogHillinthesouth-east,arealso considerableelevations.Thesurfacegenerallyisunevenandbroken,butthesoilisgenerallyproductive.At JacksonVillage(WestSumnerpostoffice)areasaw-millforlonglumber,ashingle-mill,grist-mill, cooperage,etc.;andatEastSumneraresaw,shingleandgrist-mills,andvarioussmallmanufactures.Themain businessoftheinhabitantsisagricultural,inwhichtheyhavemetwithgoodsuccess,andthetowngenerally bearstheappearanceofthrift.TheF?mfordFallsandBuckfieldRailroadtouchesthesouth-easternpartofthe town,andhasastationnearEastSumner.TheGrandTrunkrailroadstationatWestParisisabout8milesfrom SumnerCentre.
