Primary freshwater crabs are an important component of the food web in aquatic ecosystems, but our knowledge about the role of these decapods as predators and as prey is far from complete. Here we report observations of the feeding habits of the pseudothelphusid crab Ptychophallus uncinatus Campos & Lemaitre, 1999, made in 2013 during exploratory observations after sunset in the dusk and darkness of the early evening within the Veragua Rainforest Research & Adventure Park, Limón Province, in the Atlantic drainage of Costa Rica. We observed a case of cannibalism where an adult P. uncinatus was feeding on a smaller crab. Furthermore, P. uncinatus was observed to prey on an insect larva, a frog, and a lizard on three separate occasions. Additionally, a spider of the family Ctenidae was discovered feeding on a specimen of P. -

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. Pseudothelphusidae is a well diversified group of Neotropical freshwater crabs currently compris- ing 40 genera and at least 255 species and subspecies. The biology of these crabs has been an active field of research in the last 20 years. The aim of the present contribution is to discuss the significance of the new knowledge on the biology of these freshwater crabs after September 1992, to stress the interconnection of the diverse lines of research and at the same time to suggest promising new lines of investigation. All taxa described from September 1992 to October 2004 are listed, including one genus, one subgenus, 62 species and five subspecies. The implications of this new knowledge on the taxonomy, systematic and biogeography of the family are commented. KEY WORDS. Biodiversity, biogeography, Neotropical region, taxonomy. RESUMO. Avanços recentes no estudo da biologia dos caranguejos de água doce neotropicais da família Pseudothelphusidae (Crustaceaustacea, Decapodapoda, Brachyura). Pseudothelphusidae é um grupo bem diversificado de caranguejos de água doce neotropicais que compreende atualmente 40 gêneros e pelo menos 255 espécies e subespécies. A biologia desses caranguejos vem sendo um ativo campo de pesquisa nos últimos 20 anos. O objetivo desta contribuição é discutir o significado do conhecimento adquirido sobre a biologia desses caran- guejos dulcícolas após setembro de 1992, enfatizar a relação das diversas linhas de pesquisa e, ao mesmo tempo, sugerir novas linhas promissoras de investigação. -

Freshwater crabs are an important component of the fauna of limnic environments, and out of the two true freshwater crab families present in the Neotropics, Pseudothelphusidae is the most diverse. Considering the lack of information regarding reproductive features of neotropical freshwater crabs, we studied, for the first time, the fecundity and the presence of juveniles carried by females of two pseudothelphusids from the Amazon region – Kingsleya latifrons (Randall, 1840) and Kingsleya ytupora Magalhães, 1986 – and one from Central America – Potamocarcinus magnus (Rathbun, 1896). The two Kingsleya species produced relatively few (56-114) and large eggs (1.9-3.7 mm), typical for species with an abbreviated or direct development. -

Except of a casual report from Trinidad, true freshwater crabs in these phytotelmata have been found exclusively in the Old World, and observations in the New World of crabs associated with bromeliads have been limited to sesarmid crabs, non-primary freshwater crabs that generally do not breed in freshwater. Here we report the presence of a true, or primary, freshwater crab in water-filled axils of a bromeliad in the Neotropics. Immature specimens of the pseudothelphusid crab provisionally identified as Epilobocera cf. gilmanii (Smith, 1870) were collected from inside the bromeliad Hohenbergia penduliflora (A. Richard) Mez. in western Cuba. -

Later, Pretzmann (1972) included five taxa in the nominal subgenus: Eudaniela (Eudaniela) garmani garmani (Rathbun, 1898), E. (E.) garmani trujillensis (Rodriguez, 1967), E. (E.) iturbei iturbei (Rathbun, 1919), E. (E.) iturbei ranchograndensis (Rodriguez, 1966), and E. (E.) pestai (Pretzmann, 1965). These species are distributed along the Andean and Venezuelan coastal Cordillera, Trinidad, Tobago and Isla Margarita. In Rodriguez' (1982) system, the subgenera of Eudaniela are either synonymized or raised to generic status, and the nominal genus comprises all the above-mentioned taxa, but all at a specific level. Sternberg et al. (1999) performed a cladistic analysis of the Eudaniela species complex and considered it to be a paraphyletic taxon. According to their analysis, E. pestai was positioned as the most basal group among the kingsleyinine taxa studied and did not group with the other four species, which form a monophyletic group based on gonopodal characters. -

Moniruzzaman Sarker* and Dalim Kumar Department of Zoology, Rajshahi University, Rajshahi-6205 Abstract: The gonad of freshwater crabs was located in the cephalothorax above the hepatopancreas. The female reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries, oviducts and spermathecae. The study of the ovarian development was to describe the structure of the ovary and oogenesis in the Paratelphusa lamellifrons and the morphological changes in the female reproductive developmental stages overtime. Qualitative analyses of female gonads were made by describing the structure of the oocytes and determining the developmental stages of the oocytes from oogonia to full grown oocytes. The gonadal stages were observed macroscopically by volume and colour were validated through histological analysis and proved to be useful method for the rapid identification of sexual maturity in the species. Four gonadal developmental stages were found for females such as oogonia, previtellogenic oocytes, vitellogenic oocytes and full grown oocytes. Stages of maturity were described as immature, early mature, late mature and ripe. Success however, depends on our ability to overcome existing challenges such as staff retention, upgrade of both the physical and human resource, particularly technical staff. These are discussed more fully in our section on Strategy Appraisal. The Faculty has prepared a comprehensive proposal related to the Research and Innovation (R&I), pillar of the Strategic Plan. The proposal recognises that meaningful advances in R&I at UWI will not occur unless the region develops a functional innovation system that includes all major stakeholders and a regional strategy that coordinates the activities of all major actors.
