Pseudothelphusa ayutlaensis, a new species of freshwater crab (Crustacea: Brachyura: Pseudothelphusidae) from Mexico Fernando Alvarez and Jose Luis Villalobos Coleccion Nacional de Crustaceos, Instituto de Biologfa, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Apartado Postal 70-153, Mexico 04510 D.F., Mexico Abstract.—Pseudothelphusa ayutlaensis, new species, is described from the State of Guerrero, Mexico. The new species is placed in the genus Pseudo- thelphusa based on the presence of a first gonopod with the characteristic broadly rounded mesial process and a well developed subtriangular lateral pro- cess. The unique orientation of the mesial and lateral processes of the first gonopod distinguishes P. ayutlaensis from other species in the genus. The genus Pseudothelphusa de Saussure, Pseudothelphusa de Saussure, 1857 1857, is one of the most diverse within the Pseudothelphusa ayutlaensis, new species family Pseudothelphusidae Rathbun, 1893, Figs. 1, 2 with 22 species (Alvarez & Villalobos 1996, Alvarez et al. 1996), distributed ex- Holotype.—8, cw 24.3 mm, cl 16.1 mm; clusively in Mexico, and one, P. puntarenas junction of Pinela and Tonala rivers, Mun- Hobbs, 1991, from Costa Rica. De Zoysa, [email protected] Abstract The known distribution in Sri Lanka of the endemic freshwater crab Oziothelphusa mineriyaensis Bott, 1970 was lim- ited to 2 known localities in the dry zone. In this study of the distribution of this species in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, we identified 5 new localities. Our findings expand the extent of occurrence from 168 2km to 1467 km2. Our new records are 62 km from the type locality and up to 89 km from the previous records in Anuradhapura District and 20 km from previous record in Polonnaruwa District. These data provide important new information needed for the conservation of this endangered species in Sri Lanka. Key words Dry zone; freshwater crab; Mihintale; distribution. Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. The present study represents the most comprehensive taxonomic sampling of any freshwater crab family globally, and explores the impact of paleodrainage interconnectivity on cladogenesis among freshwater crabs. Phylogenetic analyses of the total evidence data using maximum-likelihood (ML), maximum parsimony (MP), and Bayesian inference (BI) produced a robust statistically well-supported tree topology that reaffirmed the monophyly of the Afrotropical freshwater crab fauna. -
