The Single Species Action Plan for the Conservation of the Madagascar Pond Heron Ardeola idae was initiated jointly by CMS and AEWA in 2007 upon a recommendation of the 14 th Meeting of the CMS Scientific Council. 2. The plan covers the entire range of this intra-African migrant. The drafting of the Plan was commissioned to the BirdLife International Africa Partnership Secretariat with financial support provided by the Ministry of Environment of Italy and was compiled by a team under the management of Paul Kariuki Ndang’ang’a. Earlier drafts of the Plan have been consulted extensively with experts and governmental officials at the Range States. 3. The Plan has already been adopted by the 4 th Meeting of the Parties to AEWA (Antananarivo, Madagascar, 15-19 September 2008). Action requested: The Scientific Council is requested to: a. review and endorse the Plan; and b. transmit the Plan to the Conference of the Parties for adoption. For reasons of economy, documents are printed in a limited number, and will not be distributed at the meeting. Delegates are kindly requested to bring their copy to the meeting and not to request additional copies. This species is clearly a competent air-breather and has a pair of well-developed pseudolungs. A new monotypic genus, Emberacarcinus n. gen., is erected to accommodate Potamocarcinus darienensis Magalhães, Campos & Türkay, 2013. The two new species and can be distinguished from their respective congeners by the structures of the male first gonopods: Ptychophallus bilobatus n. sp. has a bilobed mesial process whereas Potamocarcinus tapirrhynchus n. sp. exhibits a mesial process as a stout, rounded projection obliquely directed apical-cephalically and partially fused to the mesial lobe of the apical crest. -
The Neogene Freshwater Crabs of Europe
Joannea Geol. Paläont. 9: 45-46 (2007) The Neogene Freshwater Crabs of Europe Sebastian KLAUS & Martin GROSS Freshwater crabs represent one of the most diverse groups of brachyuran crustaceans. Although several studies on recent material use palaeontological data to reconstruct their phylogeny and palaeobiogeography (e. g., DANIELS et al. 2006, KLAUS et al. 2006), the freshwater crab’s record remains poorly known. Most of their fossil relatives come from Neogene sediments of the North-Alpine Foreland Basin and the rim of the Central Paratethys. We recorded all taxonomic data of the fossil freshwater crabs of the European Neogene and recognize seven species that we assign to the genus Potamon: Potamon quenstedti (Engelswies, Langenenslingen; Karpatian), Potamon speciosus (Öhningen; Upper Badenian to Lower Sarmatian), Potamon hungaricum (Ždana; Lower Sarmat- ian), Potamon proavitum (Andritz/Graz, St. Stefan/Gratkorn; Upper Sarmatian), Pota- mon n. sp. (Höwenegg; Pannonian), Potamon castellinense (Castellina marittima; Up- per Miocene), Potamon antiquum (Dunaalmás, Süttö, Mogyorós, Bajót; Upper Plio cene/Lower Quaternary). Today, two families of freshwater crabs occur in the Mediterranean region: the Pota midae and the African Potamonautidae in the Nile valley. Several of the European fossil freshwater crabs were formerly assigned to the Potamonautidae (e. g., BOTT 1955). The only morphological character that could support this is the typical straight and sharp postfrontal crest of potamonautids. In contrast, all known fossil freshwater crabs of Europe show the potamid character state with a postfrontal crest forming two distinct lobes. This argues for a closer relationship with the Potamidae. Therefore we contradict former assumptions on a closer relationship with African or Southeast Asian freshwater crabs and argue for the fossil crabs to be part of the stem-group of the mo- dern European potamids. -

17 the Crabs Belonging to the Grapsoidea Include a Lot Of
17 SUPERFAMILY GRAPSOIDEA The crabs belonging to the Grapsoidea include a lot of ubiquitous species collected in the mangrove and/or along the coastline. As a result, most of the species listed here under the ‘Coastal Rock-rubble’ biotope of table 2b could be reasonably listed also with marine species. This is particularly true for the Grapsidae: Grapsus, Pachygrapsus, Pseudograpsus, and Thalassograpsus. FAMILY GECARCINIDAE Cardisoma carnifex (Herbst, 1796). The present study represents the most comprehensive taxonomic sampling of any freshwater crab family globally, and explores the impact of paleodrainage interconnectivity on cladogenesis among freshwater crabs. Phylogenetic analyses of the total evidence data using maximum-likelihood (ML), maximum parsimony (MP), and Bayesian inference (BI) produced a robust statistically well-supported tree topology that reaffirmed the monophyly of the Afrotropical freshwater crab fauna.
