AUSTRALASIAN HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY, 23, 2005 The Archaeology of Subsistence on the Maritime Frontier: Faunal Analysis of the Cheyne Beach Whaling Station 1845–1877 MARTIN GIBBS The mid-nineteenth-century shore-based whaling stations scattered along the western and southern Western Australian coasts were often at the extreme edge of the frontier of European settlement. This paper explores the archaeological evidence for food supply at the Cheyne Beach whaling station, northeast of Albany. It establishes that, despite the difficulties of supply, the occupants of the station retained a heavy reliance on sheep in preference to either salted meats or readily accessible native fauna. It is suggested that this may have been a result of dietary preference, but could also result from whaling requiring a state of constant preparedness that kept the workers in the immediate vicinity of the site and unable to undertake hunting or farming activities. Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates. -

Shifts in font and style are used to accent Indigenous world view and give clear signification to the higher order thought and conceptual processing of words and their deeper meaning within the context of this thesis (Martin, 2008). For ease of transition into this thesis, I have created the “Language Weaves” list of key words and phrases that flow through the following chapters. The list below has been woven in Migloo alphabetical order. The challenge, as I explore in detail in Chapter 5 of this thesis, is for next generations of Indigenous Australian writers to relay textual information in the languages of our people from our unique tumba tjinas. Dissecting my language usage in this way and creating a Language Weaves list has been very challenging, but is part of sharing the unique messages of this Indigenous Education field research to a broader, non- Indigenous and international audience. The following weaves list consists of words taken directly from the thesis. -

Central Blue Mountains Rotary is one of five rotary Clubs located in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. We are innovative and progressive... we are a “Can Do” group of Rotarians, proud of what we achieve, and we have fun doing it. We are a club of 43 members (40 active and 3 honorary). In Rotary, women are the fastest growing membership segment and we are proud to say that 25% of our members are women. Our club meets weekly on Wednesday at the “Grandview Hotel”, 174 Great Western Highway, Wentworth Falls at 6.30pm. Our meeting format is relaxed and we have great guest speakers. Sure, we sell raffle tickets and we cook and sell sausage sandwiches just like other Rotary clubs - we have a big catering van to do this....It’s great! But our community service activities are the heart of what we do, ranging from local projects to helping communities overseas. We have a website http://centralbluerotary.org/ Perhaps our greatest challenge at present; We have been awarded a RAWCS Project Fund to raise A$280,000 to construct a new, enlarged Astha Home for Girls in Kathmandu, Nepal. The massive earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015 caused much upheaval to the lives of many people and destroyed or damaged many homes and buildings, especially in the hills and valleys outside of Kathmandu. The Astha Home for Girls is currently located in rented premises but the owner wants it back for his family members who lost their home in the earthquake. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Southern Queensland ePrints [2005] ANZLH E-Journal Traditional law and Indigenous Resistance at Moreton Bay 1842-1855 LIBBY CONNORS* On the morning of 5 January 1855 when the British settlers of Moreton Bay publicly executed the Dalla-Djindubari man, Dundalli, they made sure that every member of the Brisbane town police was on duty alongside a detachment of native police under their British officer, Lieutenant Irving. Dundalli had been kept in chains and in solitary for the seven months of his confinement in Brisbane Gaol. Clearly the British, including the judge who condemned him, Sir Roger Therry, were in awe of him. The authorities insisted that these precautions were necessary because they feared escape or rescue by his people, a large number of whom had gathered in the scrub opposite the gaol to witness the hanging. Of the ten public executions in Brisbane between 1839 and 1859, including six of Indigenous men, none had excited this much interest from both the European and Indigenous communities.1 British satisfaction over Dundalli’s death is all the more puzzling when the evidence concerning his involvement in the murders for which he was condemned is examined. Dundalli was accused of the murders of Mary Shannon and her employer the pastoralist Andrew Gregor in October 1846, the sawyer William Waller in September 1847 and wounding with intent the lay missionary John Hausmann in 1845. In the first two cases the only witnesses were Mary Shannon’s five year old daughter and a “half- caste” boy living with Gregor whose age was uncertain but described as about ten or eleven years old. -

Australian nation is predominantly ‘White’ not only in terms of society and culture, but also when viewed in the perspectives of literature, art and identity in general. There is even a claim of a ‘White Australian Nation’, from the very time when the European explorers said to have ‘discovered’ an island in the southern hemisphere, dismissed as terra nullius1, to the present day first-world capitalist situation. This was primarily achieved through a complete negation of Aboriginal existence, an utter disregard of Aboriginal identity—history, tradition, culture values, customs and mores of living. Epithets such as ‘blood thirsty’, ‘cunning’ ‘primitive’, ‘non- modern’ ‘Australian Nigger’ were often used to label and denote the Aboriginals by the colonizers. This ‘othering’ was evident in certain lopsided observations of the white colonizers: ...degraded as to divine things, almost on a level with a brute..
