Deep Time Dreaming: a Critical Review
NEW: Emerging Scholars in Australian Indigenous Studies Deep Time Dreaming: A Critical Review Natasha Capstick University of Technology Sydney, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, PO Box 123, Ultimo NSW 2017, Australia. [email protected] DOI: https://doi.org/10.5130/nesais.v4i1.1527 In 2017, Nature, the international journal of science, published research that pushed the dawn of human occupation in Australia even further into deep time: an estimated 65,000 years ago (Clarkson et al. 2017). Inevitably, questions were posed about how this discovery might affect not only our understanding of Australia’s Indigenous past, but also the global story of human evolution. Billy Griffiths’ 2018 book, Deep Time Dreaming: Uncovering Ancient Australia, chronicles developments in the field of Aboriginal archaeology from the mid-twentieth century to the current day, and is therefore well-situated to address the possible implications of these new findings. Deep Time Dreaming is an invaluable read due to the way it demonstrates that the study of deep time is not an isolatable pursuit; rather, archaeology is humanistic and often profoundly political, carrying consequences for how we identify and interact with the present. A 370-page work of historical non-fiction naturally runs the risk of becoming dry and uninspiring. To avoid such an outcome, Griffiths adopts an interlude storytelling structure that weaves together ‘miniature biographies’ of the key players in Australia’s archaeological past with a more personal, journalistic account of the author’s own experiences as an informal apprentice working alongside deep time scholars at significant sites all around the country. -

Message from our Chief Executive I am delighted to present Alfred Health’s first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP): a living and practical plan built around strong relationships, respect and pride in our local Aboriginal community and the potential for employment and business opportunities. This plan is something of a watershed in our relationship with our Aboriginal community. It recognises that we need to do better in providing care for our Aboriginal patients and commits us to a journey to achieve greater equality in healthcare for our first peoples. Already it has been a two-year journey in developing this plan and along the way we have learnt much about what reconciliation means to us and the importance of meaningful and respectful relationships. Thanks must go to the many people involved in creating this plan, particularly to local elder Caroline Briggs, The Boon Wurrung Foundation, and Reconciliation Australia who have supported and guided us through this process. In recent public pedagogy discourse Biesta (2014) puts forth three forms of public pedagogy. These three forms of publicness are; pedagogy for the public; pedagogy of the public; and pedagogy in the in- terests of publicness. What Biesta offers with these views of pedagogy in the public sphere, is an understand of the ways we teach and learn in public places, and how that pedagogy is performed. In particular a pedagogy in the interest of publicness sees grassroots commu- nity led pedagogy that acts in the interest of publicness. This provides a lens to examine how pedagogy and knowledge is held in public spaces. When thinking about the public, Savage (2014) contributes by directing our thinking about how teaching and learning lives in the public sphere. Introduction Between 1913-1957 the Queensland Branch of the Australian Workers' Union (AWU) was the largest branch of the largest trade union in Australia. Throughout this period in Queensland the AWU accounted for approximately one third of all trade unionists in that state and at its peak claimed a membership in excess of 60 000. Consequenfly the AWU in Queensland was able to exert enormous influence over the labour movement in that state not only in industrial relations but also within the political sphere through its affiliation to the Australian Labor Party. From 1915-1957 the Labor Party in Queensland held office for all but the three years between 1929-1932. AWU officials and members dominated the Labor Cabinets of the period and of the eight Labor premiers five were members of the AWU, with two others closely aligned to the Union. Only the last Labor premier of the period, Vincent Clare Gair, owed no allegiance to the AWU. The AWU also used its numerical strength and political influence to dominate the other major decision-making bodies of Queensland's labour movement, most notably the Queensland Central Executive (QCE), that body's 'inner' Executive and the triennial Labor-in-Politics Convention. -
