jazzweek.com • January 29, 2007 JazzWeek 8 Artist Q&A: Charles Tolliver

photos by Jimmy Katz hile JazzWeek had already awarded its first pick of the year to Charles Tolliver’s With Love, it’s safe to say that the WCharles Tolliver Big Band’s performance at IAJE turned more than a few heads on that Saturday night. It probably also prompted a few thoughts, like: “Where the hell has this guy been?” With only one album under his own name in the last 32 years, it’s a valid question. We decided to get to the bottom of this mystery, catching up with Tolliver at his home in Brooklyn. – Tad Hendrickson

You just came back from the West Coast. What was going on out there? There was a tribute to the great . He’s approaching his 80th birth- day and young Christian McBride, who took over the jazz reins at the Los An- geles Philharmonic, decided to do something while he’s still lucid and with us. He’s in a wheelchair when he comes out, but other than that he looks good. It was a wonderful tribute to him with players who have played with him in ➤ jazzweek.com • January 29, 2007 JazzWeek 9 Artist Q&A: Charles Tolliver (continued)

the past and they filled out the band with some well-known players, saxophon- ists in particular. It sounds like a lot of fun. Yeah. I hadn’t looked at his work since I played with him and recorded with him in the ’60s. It was certainly one of the thrills of my career, getting the call from him back then. Speaking of Silver, I hear that you teach the music of at the New School here in New York. That’s right. That came about because , who is one of the founding faculty of the jazz and contemporary music depart- ment back in ’91 or so, asked me if I’d be interested in coming to the school and teaching jazz orchestration. Then he had an epipha- ny about his days with the Jazz Messengers, which for me were just about the greatest period for any kind of sextet work. That was from 1960 to ’64 with , , , Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman. It’s quintessential. How do you approach it? I told Reggie the only way to approach it would be to transcribe as it is on the recordings so the students could see exactly how that music was made. It would cover all the theory in music. So I started that project – this is about my 15th year with the school – and I’ve tran- scribed just about everything in the repertoire from those years. It’s a course that is run during the school year and the students get to play exactly that music. It seems paradoxical, because here you are teaching, yet you yourself are self taught. It is paradoxical. I think that it’s whatever genes your parents give you – my grandmother was responsible for me, musically, because she got me my first cornet when I was eight. Music was a natural thing for me and I was a problem solver as a kid. It was interesting to me to see how this instrument with the three valves worked and it was a problem that I tried to solve. I think the best teacher, if you have it in you, is transcribing off the records. You can see how a particular style works and then it’s up to you to master it. It’s interesting, because you’d expect someone who is self-taught to be more of an intuitive player, but you’ve done the intellectual legwork as well. That shows up in your transcriptions, arrangements and compositions. That goes back to when I was five. My parents were super hip in the ’30s and ’40s when they came up – zoot suit and all that – and they had all the 10” 78s that they would play on the Victrola. So I had that in my ears and when I started to look at sheet music to see the connection, again the problem solver came out. ➤ jazzweek.com • January 29, 2007 JazzWeek 10 Artist Q&A: Charles Tolliver (continued)

Moving on to the present, I think your IAJE set blew people away? It was interesting to watch that happen because I was a bit apprehensive be- cause I hadn’t had the band together in about five months. Sometimes you just have to take the bull by the horns and go with it. They have worked with the music over the last couple of years, but that was one of those nights where it all came together. I also think that big bands work great in big spaces. Absolutely. There is more danger in playing in a small club with the audience up close because you have to watch dynamics or you will just blow people away, physi- cally. It’s not a particularly lucrative format for leaders. I’m a small band guy too, but, since I had written the music and the opportunity present the music came about, I’m doing that. But never losing sight of the small group. Blue Note decided that they wanted to present the big band so here we are. You’re one of my favorite parts of the Andrew Hill re- cord from last year, . Andrew is a one of a kind. His mind is immense. He’s opening up the possibilities of things other than so-called “,” which of course we all love. It’s hard to explain, but I just don’t even have to think when he puts his music in front of me. I always want to give 200 or 300 percent. I think that album was a good reminder that you were still around and working, because your recorded output has been sketchy. Very sketchy. That is because I was independently pro- ducing product over the last 30 years and it just so hap- pened that that became part of my personae. I didn’t pursue the major labels after I got the label [Strata East] going. Sometimes you can fall through the cracks if you are not presented by a major, but the musicians still know that you are doing your thing. People thought I became an expatriate in or something. That was not the case – I was home here working all the time. I’m not unhap- py or bitter about it. Because the little successes that I did doing my own thing have allowed me to keep my head up and keep playing. JW
