AP WORLD An 501c-3, tax deductible organization built on the legacy of a beloved son, doing our part to strengthen families and inspire communities during difficult times.

Professional basketball player, DeAndre’ Bembry of the Toronto Raptors, launched AP World in memory of his brother, Adrian Potts. Adrian celebrated his brothers’ accomplishments and planned to be sitting alongside DeAndre’ to watch the NBA draft on June 23, 2016. Adrian helped plan the draft party with their mother, Essence.

Essence dedicated her life to helping her sons achieve success and was devastated when she received the dreaded phone call no parent ever wants to hear. In the early morning of June 11, 2016 literally days before the much-anticipated draft, Essence received the tragic news from Adrian’s father. Her 20-year-old, ambitious, fun-loving and tenacious son, was shot and killed near the University of North Carolina, Charlotte campus. This tragedy had a shocking and paralyzing effect on the Bembry family. Knowing where to find support and assistance while planning a funeral service, dealing with unimaginable grief and the reality of life without a son, brother and best friend, were overwhelming for Essence and DeAndre’.

This family tragedy served as the catalyst for DeAndre’ to develop a support system that could be an anchor and a resource hub for other families who may have to take a similar journey through grief. “AP” is named for their beloved son and brother, representing the memory and legacy of Adrian Allen Potts.

Upon embarking on his professional career, DeAndre’s top priority was to launch AP World. His desire to distinguish himself as a person of conviction and compassion would herald his entrance into the world of NBA professional basketball. The organization remains a priority for him. As the founder and an active participant in strategy, innovation and decision-making DeAndre’ remains engaged with AP World.

Mission To promote a culture of peace and embolden families who are grieving due to violence. Vision A world where families don’t bury innocent loved ones due to violence.

The Facts • Researchers at Boston University found that, Black men are twice as likely as white males to die before age 20. • More than 85 percent of black homicide victims are shot and killed with guns. An important part of ending the gun violence epidemic is to reduce homicides in the African-American community.

These facts are both appalling and unacceptable, AP World is committed to helping bring about change through efforts to support families experiencing grief due to violence.

Performing Artists

Discovered by at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, Bob James recorded his first solo album, Bold Conceptions, that year for . 58 albums and innumerable awards would follow through five decades. James is a prolific, best-selling, Grammy-winning composer, arranger, producer, and pianist. Along with Grover Washington, Jr., he is known as one of the fathers of smooth and contemporary jazz. In addition to gold- and platinum- selling albums on his own and in various collaborations, he issued four numerically titled albums for CTI in the mid-'70s that successfully melded jazz, pop, and classical styles and sharp with accessible melodies and (often funky) grooves.

PIECES OF A DREAM Keyboardist James Lloyd, drummer Curtis Harmon and former bassist Cedric Napoleon, also known as Pieces of a Dream emerged out of Philadelphia’s music scene in 1976. The youthful exuberance of those two Philly kids from the mid-‘70s is still very much alive in Soul Intent, Pieces of a Dream’s latest effort on Heads Up. The 11-song set gets back to the basics of Pieces’ original songwriting and recording philosophy by reconnecting to the band’s original live-in-the- studio approach and maximizing the most fundamental and enduring components of the Pieces experience.

GERALD ALBRIGHT

Playing both sax and bass, Gerald Albright became the consummate session and touring musician in the 80s, working with a host of Grammy award winning artists. He launched his solo career in the infancy of what became the smooth jazz format, with Just Between Us in 1987 and has been a core part of the genre with chart-topping albums, countless radio hits and as a member of many all-star tours. Most recently, Albright has been on the road with South Africa gospel/jazz singer and guitarist Jonathan Butler. Because Albright’s musical muse has taken him to so many fascinating locales along the contemporary R&B/urban jazz spectrum, he’s joyfully defied easy categorizations.

JEFF BRADSHAW Jeff Bradshaw’s story began at a dusty floored church in North Philly, where brass bands are the main attraction. He was born and raised in church and that is where he had his first musical experience. As a youngster, Mr. Bradshaw believed that the trombone was to begin its trek to becoming the coolest instrument in mainstream music, not just jazz. Mr. Bradshaw was determined to make the trombone hip, and not just an instrument for nerds in the high school band. As he transitioned into adulthood, after a long and dedicated journey, Mr. Bradshaw arrived into the real world of major recording, with artists like Eryka Badu, Jill Scott, Floetry, Darius Rucker, Musiq, The Roots, Earth Wind & Fire, and Michael Jackson, just to name a few.

JAZZ FUNK SOUL Smooth jazz supergroup Jazz Funk Soul began in the mid-2010s as a collaborative trio featuring veteran musicians (keyboards), (guitar), and (saxophone). After Loeb's death in 2017, guitarist Paul Jackson, Jr. joined the remaining members for the 2019 release Life and Times, which honored their former bandmate. Formed as a live touring ensemble in 2013, the trio began making instrumental jazz and R&B built upon the vast career experience of all three members. Jazz Funk Soul released their full-length eponymous debut on Shanachie in 2014. The trio returned in 2016 with their sophomore album, More Serious Business. When Loeb succumbed to cancer in July 2017, Lorber and Harp enlisted guitarist Paul Jackson, Jr. to join them for an album that would serve as a tribute to Loeb's legacy.

MARION MEADOWS Marion Meadows started playing tenor sax in high school, and then migrated to soprano sax. His passion for various types of music led him down an eclectic musical path. Meadows hooked up with numerous artists and musicians and became a well known sideman in his own right, recording or performing over the years with Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carne, The Temptations, Michael Bolton, and Will Downing, among many others. In the late ‘80s, became a member of a New York avant-garde band called the Aboriginal Music Society.

ALEX BUGNON Alex Bugnon has been a prolific, energetic force on the contemporary music scene for almost three decades. A renowned musician, composer and bandleader. Over almost 3 decades, Alex Bugnon has built a strong and loyal fan base across the country and around the world. His tour schedule has never eased, even besting the great Dizzy Gillespie’s record of appearances at Washington, D.C.’s Blues Alley. Last year marked Alex’s 20th consecutive year’s appearance at the legendary venue!
