Student Matinee Series Maurice Hines is Tappin’ Thru Life Study Guide Created by Miller Grove High School Drama Class of Joyce Scott As part of the Alliance Theatre Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists’ Dramaturgy by Students Under the guidance of Teaching Artist Barry Stewart Mann Maurice Hines is Tappin’ Thru Life was produced at the Arena Theatre in Washington, DC, from Nov. 15 to Dec. 29, 2013 The Alliance Theatre Production runs from April 2 to May 4, 2014 The production will travel to Beverly Hills, California from May 9-24, 2014, and to the Cleveland Playhouse from May 30 to June 29, 2014. Reviews Keith Loria, on theatermania.com, called the show “a tender glimpse into the Hineses’ rise to fame and a touching tribute to a brother.” Benjamin Tomchik wrote in Broadway World, that the show “seems determined not only to love the audience, but to entertain them, and it succeeds at doing just that! While Tappin' Thru Life does have some flaws, it's hard to find anyone who isn't won over by Hines showmanship, humor, timing and above all else, talent.” In The Washington Post, Nelson Pressley wrote, “’Tappin’ is basically a breezy, personable concert. The show doesn’t flinch from hard-core nostalgia; the heart-on-his-sleeve Hines is too sentimental for that. It’s frankly schmaltzy, and it’s barely written — it zips through selected moments of Hines’s life, creating a mood more than telling a story. it’s a pleasure to be in the company of a shameless, ebullient vaudeville heart.” Maurice Hines Is .

New York Avenue, Atlantic City, New Jersey AP WORLD An 501c-3, tax deductible organization built on the legacy of a beloved son, doing our part to strengthen families and inspire communities during difficult times. Professional basketball player, DeAndre’ Bembry of the Toronto Raptors, launched AP World in memory of his brother, Adrian Potts. Adrian celebrated his brothers’ accomplishments and planned to be sitting alongside DeAndre’ to watch the NBA draft on June 23, 2016. Adrian helped plan the draft party with their mother, Essence. Essence dedicated her life to helping her sons achieve success and was devastated when she received the dreaded phone call no parent ever wants to hear. In the early morning of June 11, 2016 literally days before the much-anticipated draft, Essence received the tragic news from Adrian’s father. Her 20-year-old, ambitious, fun-loving and tenacious son, was shot and killed near the University of North Carolina, Charlotte campus. This tragedy had a shocking and paralyzing effect on the Bembry family. Knowing where to find support and assistance while planning a funeral service, dealing with unimaginable grief and the reality of life without a son, brother and best friend, were overwhelming for Essence and DeAndre’. This family tragedy served as the catalyst for DeAndre’ to develop a support system that could be an anchor and a resource hub for other families who may have to take a similar journey through grief.

A Monthly Message From the SAN RAFAEL AFRICAN AMERICAN PARENT COUNCIL Volume II December 2015 | 4 Pages Diverse Holiday Giving Since the Kenneth and Mamie Clark’s research on dolls and children’s self-esteem for the 1954 United States Supreme Court case, Brown vs. Board of Education, kids have more access to dolls that accurately and favorably represent diverse physical characteristics, such as skin color, facial features, and hair texture. If you are looking to diversify your child’s doll collection this holiday season, there are many companies and entrepreneurs that have created product lines that are enjoying success in the market. Check out some of these dolls and think about adding them to your child’s toy choices or consider them when buying gifts: Ava Du Vernay Barbie | The Angelica doll with beautiful kinky hair from naturallyperfectdolls.com | Doc McStuffins | My Life as a Ballerina African American Doll from walmart.com | My Friend, Cayla from target.com | Madame Alexander from hallmark.com |Queens of Africa Dolls from queensofafricadolls.com | Double Dutch Dolls from doubledutchdolls.com | My Pretty Brown Doll from myprettyprowndoll.bigcartel.com (crocheted dolls) | Rooti Dolls from rootidolls.com/new/ (multilingual African dolls, but not available in the United States yet!) | Children of America Dolls from coadolls.com (custom- made dolls from local retiree). Please note: If you plan to purchase a doll from an independent seller, do your research and realize that it may take a while for you to receive your order due to the holiday rush. Some parents feel that something as simple as talking to their children (at the appropriate age) about their doll preference can lead to minimizing their projected and internal skin color bias and implicit stereotyping and embracing an appreciation for diverse forms of beauty, including their own as well as others’.
