  • Not Just a Fantasy: Fantasy Studios Jul 1, 2008 12:00 PM, by Barbara Schultz
Not Just a Fantasy: Fantasy Studios Jul 1, 2008 12:00 PM, By Barbara Schultz LEGENDARY STUDIO IS BACK FROM THE BRINK Fantasy Studios’ grand Studio A is equipped with an SSL 8056 G+ console, Pro Tools HD3 and Augspurger custom mains. Photo: Steve Maruta In the San Francisco Bay Area studio scene and beyond, Fantasy Studios (www.fantasystudios.com) and the Fantasy Records label are the stuff of legend. The facility has been situated in West Berkeley for more than three decades — part of an indie media mini-empire once owned by filmmaker Saul Zaentz. The studio most famously hosted recordings by the Fantasy label's biggest act, Creedence Clearwater Revival, as well as other national acts, including Santana and Green Day. Because the facility changed hands a couple of times in recent years, you may have heard through the grapevine that Fantasy Studios was going to close last year, or this year… There was more than a grain of truth to those rumors. The studios, label and back catalog were taken over by Concord Records a few years ago, with Concord renting space in the building Zaentz still owned, but then Zaentz sold the building itself to a real estate developer, Wareham Development. When Concord's long-term lease on the building expired at the end of 2007, the label's management decided to move the label and catalog south to Concord's Beverly Hills headquarters and dismissed all of the Fantasy Studios staff. Longtime studio manager Nina Bombardier began making plans for a new life outside the music business, and all of her employees assumed the studios would close.

THE DAVID BENOIT TRIO FEATURING JANE MONHEIT AND THE ALL-AMERICAN BOYS CHORUS, BELIEVE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED DUO’S SECOND COLLABORATION FLAUNTS HEART-WARMING, HOLIDAY-THEMED FAVORITES For Immediate Release – In January of 2015, the GRAMMY®-nominated pianist/composer/arranger David Benoit, a founding father of contemporary jazz, and Jane Monheit, the First-Runner-Up in the 1998 Thelonious Monk International Vocalist Competition who soars through and above the genres of jazz, Broadway, standards and pop, recorded 2 In Love. Released on June 16th, 2015 on Concord Records, this stunning, critically acclaimed collaboration paved the way for the duo’s follow-up. Set for release on October 16th via Concord Records, Believe—their enduring and epoch recording of heart-warming holiday-themed favorites—is an equally vivacious, vivid and varied masterpiece. Featuring Benoit’s trio, with drummer Jamey Tate and bassist David Hughes, and The All-American Boys Chorus, a California-based ensemble, Believe is composed of trio, choral and orchestral renditions of the music of Richard Rodgers, Mel Tormé, Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn, and the legendary Charlie Brown composer, Vince Guaraldi—along with an original composition from Benoit. “I’ve done a couple of Christmas records,” Benoit says. “My first one, Christmas Time, came out on the AVI label in 1983. And I did another one called Remembering Christmas on GRP in 1996. The challenge of this record was to search for songs that weren’t done as Christmas songs.” It’s also a challenge Monheit welcomes as well. “We just wanted a classic, really warm-hearted sound. Something that felt sincere,” Monheit says.

Allen Finchum Dissertation Adviser Dr. Brad A. Bays Dr. Jonathan C. Comer Dr. Thomas Lanners Outside Committee Member ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Completing this dissertation and my doctoral program at Oklahoma State University would not have been possible without the support of many people over the past ten years. I would like to start with my advisor and chair, Dr. Allen Finchum, who not only happens to share my interest in smooth jazz, but has always been there for me. One could not ask for a better mentor, as he was always so giving of his time, whether we were discussing my research, talking about my experiences as a graduate instructor, or him just taking an interest in my personal life. I feel blessed to have been able to work with such a special graduate committee, comprised of Dr. Jon Comer, Dr. Brad Bays, and Dr. Tom Lanners. Dr. Comer sparked my passion for quantitative methods and spatial analysis, and Dr. Bays taught my very first course at OSU, a wonderful and stimulating seminar in historical geography. With Dr. Lanners, I could not have asked for a better fit for my outside committee member, and I feel privileged to have been able to work with a musician of his caliber.

  • 2 in Love Press Release
DAVID BENOIT’S 2 IN LOVE, FEATURING JANE MONHEIT, IS THE GRAMMY®-NOMINATED PIANIST/COMPOSER/ ARRANGER’S FIRST RELEASE WITH A VOCALIST For Immediate Release – For three decades, the GRAMMY®-nominated pianist/composer/ arranger David Benoit has reigned supreme as one the founding fathers of contemporary jazz. But, like an actor who has been known primarily for one role, he wanted to show other dimensions of his artistry, influenced by Stephen Sondheim, Burt Bacharach, Dave Grusin and Leonard Bernstein. “I’ve done records where I had a token vocal tune, all the way back to my first album,” Benoit says. “But I never did an entire record [with vocals]. So the thought here was to do something really different.” The result is Benoit’s thirty-fifth recording as a leader and his first with a vocalist. 2 In Love, set for release on June 16, 2015 via Concord Records, features Jane Monheit, the GRAMMY®- nominated, cool-toned chanteuse from New York, who burst on the scene in 1998 as the first runner-up in the Thelonious Monk International Vocalist Competition. “Concord suggested Jane Monheit,” Benoit says. “She was the perfect vocalist. I like to make records a certain way: I prefer to go in live and record it all at once. And a lot of vocalists can’t do that: they need to edit, fix and use auto-tune. But Jane doesn’t need to do any of those things. Many of the keys were difficult, but she sang everything live. Jane also has a background in Broadway, which is another part of my lexicon that I’ve not explored.
