This article shows that Pope Francis diagnoses economic inequality as both a structural problem and a problem of virtue, and that the virtue he calls for in response is what James F. Keenan, SJ has called Jesuit hospitality. Reviewing contemporary theological work on hospitality, I show that Francis’ Jesuit hospitality shares many features with hospitality as described by feminist theologians. Namely, it is risky, takes place across difference, acknowledges the marginality of both host and guest, and promises mutual benefit to each party. Francis’ account of the spiritual practice of encounter provides a concrete vision of Jesuit hospitality in action. This article contributes to existing literature on the uniquely Jesuit nature of Francis’ theology and to work showing the resonance of his intellectual standpoint with feminist approaches. It proposes a Christian virtue response to the pressing contemporary problem of economic inequality. Keywords: inequality; virtue; hospitality; Jesuit; Pope Francis; feminism 1. Introduction In today’s globalized, unequal world, 2.2 billion people live on less than $2 U.S. per day while 62 individuals own as much wealth as the poorest half of the world [1]. This and other shocking statistics have made economic inequality an issue of urgent concern for scholars, policy makers and religious leaders. -

Alessandro Valignano (1539–1606), the visitor to the Jesuit missionary enter- prise in the Far East, requested that Superior General Claudio Acquaviva (1543–1615) send him 600 or 800 copies of Lactantius (240–320) (probably The Divine Institutes, which Valignano himself had annotated) for use by Japanese seminarians. The first text that Valignano’s novice, Matteo Ricci (1552–1610), wrote to his literati audience in China was a treatise on friendship—an imita- tion of Cicero’s De amicitia. The first book published by the first printing press of the Jesuit Roman College, where Ricci was trained, was Martialis’s Epigrams, a pagan classic. It was edited by the Jesuit André des Freux (d. 1556) who— along with Jerónimo Nadal and Peter Canisius—was part of the group that founded the first Jesuit school in Messina. Robert Southwell, a poet and Elizabethan martyr, wrote in Latin before he wrote in English. His companion in martyrdom, Edmund Campion, was the author of several tragedies in Latin, which he composed during his tenure as a teacher of rhetoric at the Jesuit col- lege in Prague. Classical tragedies of Seneca, often used by Jesuit playwrights, were translated into English by a sixteenth-century English Jesuit poet, Jasper Heywood. The latter’s countryman—Gerard Manley Hopkins, the Victorian Jesuit poet and professor of classics—was the author of an English translation of Cicero’s De officiis. -

This study presents a methodological framework for understanding early modern patronage in which the arts are necessarily viewed as interconnected, and patronage is understood as a complex and often contradictory process that involved all elements of society. First, this study examines the legacy of arts patronage that Albrecht V inherited from his Wittelsbach predecessors and developed during his reign, from 1550-1579. Albrecht V‟s patronage is then divided into three areas: northern princely humanism, traditional religion and sociological propaganda. -

MEN FOR OTHERS by Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Education for social justice and social action today FOREWORD The address of Father Pedro Arrupe to the "Tenth International Congress of Jesuit Alumni of Europe," in Valencia, Spain, on July 31, 1973, has already been published in French, Spanish and Italian. The address caused a stir because it called with insistence for change. Continuing education for social justice poses no threat while it remains on the level of abstract theory. Father Arrupe brings doctrine to bear on the personal lives of all who hear him. To accept what he has to say is to accept and work for change in one's own manner of life and environment - not an easy thing at all. Words like "radical" have been used about this address. That word is not hard to accept if it means going to the root of the matter and the discourse is indeed radical, as is the teaching of Pope Paul VI in Populorum Progressio and Octogesima Adveniens. The words of Father Arrupe were addressed to alumni, but they apply to all of us who need education or more likely re-education for social justice and social action today. In 1973, this address was delivered to a group of Jesuit high school alumni who were predominantly male. We have adapted the text to include "men and women" to make its powerful message applicable for a contemporary Jesuit alumni audience. MEN AND WOMEN FOR OTHERS by Pedro Arrupe, S.J. She was part of the team of teachers who were part of the creation of the first schools of music Chiquitos Missions . She received singing lessons and orchestral choral conductingin Santa Cruzby national and international teachers. He participated with the choir and orchestra of Urubichá to the International Festival of American Renaissance and Baroque Music Misiones de Chiquitos, group that in 2005 she came to lead . She has participated in the Music Festival in San Sebastian , Spain and Bolivia Fifteen daysin Paris , France. Member of the Bolivian choir Arakaendar, with whom she participated in the Chuiquitos Missions Festival accompanied with the English group Florilegium led by Master Ashley Solomon. With both groups , she toured internationally for Holland and England in 2008 . She is currently director of the Choir and Orchestra of the School of Music Guarani Palmarito community, municipality of Gutierrez. With them he toured Italy participating in the VII Festival of Baroque Music in honor of Domenico Zipoli in 2011. About the Orquestra conductor in Santa Rosa Heriberto Paredes Guiramusay was born in the community of Ivo , in the Chaco region of the department of Chuquisaca. He began his musical studies as an autodidact at the age of 13 years’ old. At 2008,by patronage of Father Tarcisio Ciabatti, Father Walter Newrit and Sister Ludmila Wolf, received musical training at the Urubichá Institute of Integral Training Choir and Orchestra,on the 2011 comes to graduate in music majoring in violin. -

Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley Courtesy New Orleans Province, Society of Jesus Celebrating the Centenary of Pedro Arrupe This is the first in a series of events at JSTB honoring the centennial of the birth of Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Fr. Arrupe the superior general of the Society of Jesus during the tumultuous period following the Second Vatican Council, from 1965 until his formal resignation in 1983. He is an important figure for many reasons and the idea of dedicating a series of events to honor his memory struck a chord with many members of the JSTB community. Many Jesuits remember him as a dynamic and beloved leader who was broad-minded, patient with and trusting of those under him. And of course, he presided over an extraordinarily important period in our history and during that time was one of the most recognized and influential Catholic leaders in the world. 1 CourtesyTime Magazine There are good reasons why Jesuits would like to celebrate such a towering contemporary figure. For myself, I entered Jesuits in the mid-1970s during Fr. Arrupe’s term as General. As I say in the introduction to the small collection of his writings that I was privileged to edit, he was “a hero to those entrusted with my early formation in the Jesuits [who] quickly became my hero.”1 However, as important as Arrupe is to Jesuits, his influence does not begin or end there. Many others religious women and men of various congregations as well as numerous lay men and women, acknowledge a tremendous dept to him for his leadership and vision. -

This article considers this period, which has up to now remained almost unheeded in the history of the genre. It looks at the collec- tions of epistles by relevant authors (Eobanus Hessus, Andreas Alenus, Jacob Bider- mann, Balduinus Cabillavius, Jean Vincart, Jacob Balde) in their context within literary history and considers the various ends they served, with a focus on their representa- tions of Jesuit history and culture. Their relations to contemporary poetological dis- courses, represented for example by the Jesuit scholar Antonio Possevino, are addressed as well as their use of pictural media as in the case of Jean Vincart’s heroic epistles. Early Modern Catholicism : an Anthology of Primary Sources
Early Modern Catholicism makes available in modern spelling and punctuation substantial Catholic contributions to literature, history, political thought, devotion, and theology in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Rather than perpetuate the usual stereotypes and misinformation, it provides a fresh look at Catholic writing long suppressed, marginalized, and ignored. The anthology gives back voices to those silenced by prejudice, exile, persecution, or martyrdom while attention to actual texts challenges conventional beliefs about the period. The anthology is divided into eight sections entitled controversies, lives and deaths, poetry, instructions and devotions, drama, histories, fic- tion, and documents, and includes seventeen black and white illustrations from a variety of Early Modern sources. Amongst the selections are texts which illuminate the role of women in recusant community and in the Church; the rich traditions of prayer and mysticism; the theology and politics of martyrdom; the emergence of the Catholic Baroque in literature and art; and the polemical battles fought within the Church and against its enemies. Early Modern Catholicism also provides a context that redefines the established canons of Early Modern England, including such figures as Edmund Spenser, John Donne, John Milton, William Shakespeare, and Ben Jonson. 1. Our world is a changing one. As we look at the world that our present students will inherit, we know that they will live in communities and participate in workplaces that are increasingly a mix of cultures, races, creeds, and values. We can see that technology will offer more and more information, and perhaps less and less analysis. We can envision a furthering of environmental degradation and depletion of the planet’s resources. And we anticipate that growing financial and educational gaps between and among different constituents in our societies will lead to even more political and social strife and upheaval around our worlds. Fundamentally, all education is about preparing students for their own future. It is about helping them become critical thinkers who can absorb and create new knowledge. It is about giving them the skills to lead and serve in the world they’re going to inhabit—in a world that will need their leadership. When Jesuits started educating children 450 years ago in Messina, Sicily, it was at the request president’S of the town’s merchant class. They wanted their report 2012 sons to take over the management not only of BEGINS AFTER PAGE 39 their companies but of their city. So the Jesuits devised an educational program, which has been reformed and fine-tuned since that time, Father Garanzini spoke to the City Club of Chicago, a group of to prepare people to be not just merchants, local community and business leaders, this fall. -

Opera and Spanish Jesuit Evangelization in the New World Abstract As missionaries across the New World quickly discovered, Indians exhibited a strong attraction to music and song, but it was the Jesuits who were particularly adept at exploiting those musical interests to reinforce their argument that the Indians could adopt Christian faith, understand its principles, and live by its commands. One of the first operas in the New World is San Ignacio de Loyola (1720?), written by Domenico Zipoli, a famed Roman organ master, composer and Jesuit missionary. This essay brings to light the little known fact that Jesuit opera exists and also discusses how Zipoli's work was a unique collaboration between European missionaries and the Indians in the composition and performance of the music, as well as in the writing and singing of the Spanish libretto, which also included a parallel text in the native Chiquitos language.
