    HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH CHIPPING NORTON 1836 - 20O8 To The Reader. To-day, as we worship at Holy Trinity, we probably give few thoughts as to how there came to be a church here in the first place nor that, little more than one hundred and seventy years ago, life was not very easy as a practising Roman Catholic. Much of what we have today is due to three major physical influences down the years, the Earls of Shrewsbury (the Talbot family), the Jesuit Fathers and all those Religious who have served the Parish down the years. They all deserve our thanks and prayers. This rather leaves out the parishioners, but whether we like it or not, in real terms our role is a minor one even if for some it involves a lot of “minor work”. It might be better if more of us took more part in Parish affairs and spread the work load a bit but nevertheless, we should not overlook the role the Faith of parishioners has played in our small church, in the past and will continue to play into the future. This history is intended as a reminder of both the past and present parish and is concerned with three things – the physical structure of the church buildings, the Religious who have served the par- ish down the years and the parishioners for whom the Church and they exist. The origins of this and a Short History published earlier would not have come about without the suggestion of Father Frank Hull in 2006 and the major sources are acknowledged later.

This article shows that Pope Francis diagnoses economic inequality as both a structural problem and a problem of virtue, and that the virtue he calls for in response is what James F. Keenan, SJ has called Jesuit hospitality. Reviewing contemporary theological work on hospitality, I show that Francis’ Jesuit hospitality shares many features with hospitality as described by feminist theologians. Namely, it is risky, takes place across difference, acknowledges the marginality of both host and guest, and promises mutual benefit to each party. Francis’ account of the spiritual practice of encounter provides a concrete vision of Jesuit hospitality in action. This article contributes to existing literature on the uniquely Jesuit nature of Francis’ theology and to work showing the resonance of his intellectual standpoint with feminist approaches. It proposes a Christian virtue response to the pressing contemporary problem of economic inequality. Keywords: inequality; virtue; hospitality; Jesuit; Pope Francis; feminism 1. As stated earlier, India had a hoary tradition of tolerance and assimilation. This tradition was the creation of the syncretic Hindu mind eager to be in touch with all other thought currents. “Let noble thoughts come to us from all sides”1 was the prayer of the Hindu sages. The early converts to Christianity lived cordially in the midst of Hindus respecting one another. This facilitated the growth of Christianity in the Indian soil perfectly as an Indian religion. The course of cordiality did not run smooth. The first shock to the cordial relation between Christian community and non-Christians was received from the famous Synod of Diamper. Abstract Employing the concepts of lifeworld (Lebenswelt) and system as primarily discussed by Edmund Husserl and Jürgen Habermas, this dissertation argues that the lifeworlds of Anglo- Indian and Goan Catholics in the Greater Toronto Area have permitted members of these communities to relatively easily understand, interact with and manoeuvre through Canada’s democratic, individualistic and market-driven system. Suggesting that the Catholic faith serves as a multi-dimensional primary lens for Canadian Goan and Anglo-Indians, this sociological ethnography explores how religion has and continues affect their identity as diasporic post- colonial communities. Modifying key elements of traditional Indian culture to reflect their Catholic beliefs, these migrants consider their faith to be the very backdrop upon which their life experiences render meaningful. Through systematic qualitative case studies, I uncover how these individuals have successfully maintained a sense of security and ethnic pride amidst the myriad cultures and religions found in Canada’s multicultural society. Oscillating between the fuzzy boundaries of the Indian traditional and North American liberal worlds, Anglo-Indians and Goans attribute their achievements to their open-minded Westernized upbringing, their traditional Indian roots and their Catholic-centred principles effectively making them, in their opinions, admirable models of accommodation to Canada’s system.

    MEN FOR OTHERS by Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Education for social justice and social action today FOREWORD The address of Father Pedro Arrupe to the "Tenth International Congress of Jesuit Alumni of Europe," in Valencia, Spain, on July 31, 1973, has already been published in French, Spanish and Italian. The address caused a stir because it called with insistence for change. Continuing education for social justice poses no threat while it remains on the level of abstract theory. Father Arrupe brings doctrine to bear on the personal lives of all who hear him. To accept what he has to say is to accept and work for change in one's own manner of life and environment - not an easy thing at all. Words like "radical" have been used about this address. That word is not hard to accept if it means going to the root of the matter and the discourse is indeed radical, as is the teaching of Pope Paul VI in Populorum Progressio and Octogesima Adveniens. The words of Father Arrupe were addressed to alumni, but they apply to all of us who need education or more likely re-education for social justice and social action today. In 1973, this address was delivered to a group of Jesuit high school alumni who were predominantly male.
