A Preliminary Checklist of Arizona Macrofungi
A PRELIMINARY CHECKLIST OF ARIZONA MACROFUNGI Scott T. Bates School of Life Sciences Arizona State University PO Box 874601 Tempe, AZ 85287-4601 ABSTRACT A checklist of 1290 species of nonlichenized ascomycetaceous, basidiomycetaceous, and zygomycetaceous macrofungi is presented for the state of Arizona. The checklist was compiled from records of Arizona fungi in scientific publications or herbarium databases. Additional records were obtained from a physical search of herbarium specimens in the University of Arizona’s Robert L. Gilbertson Mycological Herbarium and of the author’s personal herbarium. This publication represents the first comprehensive checklist of macrofungi for Arizona. In all probability, the checklist is far from complete as new species await discovery and some of the species listed are in need of taxonomic revision. The data presented here serve as a baseline for future studies related to fungal biodiversity in Arizona and can contribute to state or national inventories of biota. INTRODUCTION Arizona is a state noted for the diversity of its biotic communities (Brown 1994). Boreal forests found at high altitudes, the ‘Sky Islands’ prevalent in the southern parts of the state, and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa P.& C. Lawson) forests that are widespread in Arizona, all provide rich habitats that sustain numerous species of macrofungi. Even xeric biomes, such as desertscrub and semidesert- grasslands, support a unique mycota, which include rare species such as Itajahya galericulata A. Møller (Long & Stouffer 1943b, Fig. 2c). Although checklists for some groups of fungi present in the state have been published previously (e.g., Gilbertson & Budington 1970, Gilbertson et al. 1974, Gilbertson & Bigelow 1998, Fogel & States 2002), this checklist represents the first comprehensive listing of all macrofungi in the kingdom Eumycota (Fungi) that are known from Arizona.

JANUARY 1985 INTRODUCTION There has long been a need for a compendium of common names for tree diseases in the Western United States and Western Canada, so the authors were asked by the Chairman of the Western International Forest Disease Work Confer- ence in 1982 to prepare such a list. This is the first attempt to compile a list of common names of western tree diseases, although some publications (see references) cite several names. Ziller's (1974) is the most comprehensive for a disease group, providing common names for all tree rusts in Western Canada. In preparing this list, comments from members of the Western International Forest Disease Work Conference were solicited. The response was very good and, as was anticipated, there was considerable disagreement on appropriate common names for some diseases. In general, views of pathologists most familiar with the disease in question were relied upon. There were some suggestions that we develop a new systematic system of common names to help do away with the confusion and ambiguity that exists in the present hodgepodge of names.

The two major fungal causes of stem galls are Phomopsis spp. and Apiosporina morbosa The latter produces "black knot" on the branches of black cherry and causes severe stem galls on this species (figs. 18-19). A stem gall of unknown origin is shown in figure 20. It was found on the lower stem of a mature black cherry and is composed of very hard deadwood bor- dered by little callus tissue. The only similar galls on record are found on European ash ("curl crop") (Erteld et al. 1964) and on sugar maple. However, these galls are surrounded by massive borders of callus tissue. Crown gall resulting from infection by Agrobacte- rium tumefaciens was first found on the lower portions of tree stems, mostly around the root collar (fig. 21). The genus Phomopsis produces stem galls over a wide area of the Northern, Eastern, and Southern United States and damages trees of numerous species. On sugar maple, r'homopsis galls are characterized by rough, ridged, and warty growths (fig. 22). These galls also are common in hickory and several oak species, but develop less frequently on elm, gum, maple, serviceberry, and sugarberry (figs. 23-25). Some insect damage is followed by the development of galls, cankers, or lesions (fig. 26). One of the most devastating of these insects is the sugar maple borer (Glycobius specwsus (Say)).

Two hundred and sixteen species, 90 genera, 22 families, and 9 orders (Agaricales, Auriculariales, Cantharellales, Corticiales, Gloeophyllales, Hymenochaetales, Polyporales, Russulales and Trechisporales) have been reported from the area. Key words — macrofungi, neotropics Introduction The aphyllophoraceous fungi are currently spread througout many orders of Agaricomycetes (Hibbett et al. 2007) and comprise species that function as major decomposers of plant organic matter (Alexopoulos et al. 1996). The Amazonian Forest (00°44'–06°24'S / 58°05'–68°01'W) covers an area of 7 × 106 km2 in nine South American countries. Around 63% of the forest is located in nine Brazilian States (Acre, Amazonas, Amapá, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins, west of Maranhão, and north of Mato Grosso) (Fig. 1). The Amazonian forest consists of a mosaic of different habitats, such as open ombrophilous, stational semi-decidual, mountain, “terra firme,” “várzea” and “igapó” forests, and “campinaranas” (Amazonian savannahs). Six months of dry season and six month of rainy season can be observed (Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi 2007). Even with the high biodiversity of Amazonia and the well-documented importance of aphyllophoraceous fungi to all arboreous ecosystems, few studies have been undertaken in the Brazilian Amazonia on this group of fungi (Bononi 1981, 1992, Capelari & Maziero 1988, Gomes-Silva et al.

Se estudiaron 27 especies de Agaricomycetes xilófagos que crecen en la planicie central del desierto sonorense. Se muestreó en 10 localidades durante las 4 estaciones del año, en 3 tipos de vegetación. La mayor diversidad se registró en el matorral desértico micrófilo (16 spp.), seguido del mezquital (10 spp.) y matorral sarcocaule (8 spp.). El hospedero en donde se encontró el mayor número de esporomas y especies fue Prosopis glandulosa (Fabaceae). Siete especies causaron pudrición marrón, que representan el 25.9%, mientras que 20 (74.1%) ocasionaron pudrición blanca. El mayor número de especies se observó en verano con 26. Crinipellis zonata, Fomitiporia texana, Fuscoporia chrysea, Ganoderma sessiliforme, Perenniporia phloiophila y Phellinus robiniae son nuevos registros para Sonora. Exidiopsis calcea, Hyphodontiella multiseptata y Mycoacia uda se citan por primera vez para México, lo que aumenta a 670 especies de hongos conocidos para Sonora.
