Studia Antiqua et Archaeologica 23(2): 303–313 Cicero on the gods and Roman religious practices Arina BRAGOVA1 Abstract. The article analyses Cicero’s attitude to gods, religion, divination, and superstition. Cicero follows tradition in acknowledging the existence of the gods, considering them immortal, blissful, animate, and anthropomorphic. He is ambivalent about the interaction between the gods and people. Cicero considers religion important for the Roman people because this was the popular belief — it was not his own viewpoint. Cicero thinks that people obtain divination from the gods. According to Cicero, there are two types of divination: artificial (auspices, haruspices, divination by lightning, stars, and other signs of nature) and natural (predictions in a dream, in a state of ecstasy, before death). In relation to divination, we see how multi- dimensional Cicero’s beliefs were: as a philosopher, he can accept or deny divination; as a Roman politician, he regards divination as an important instrument of the Roman religious rituals. Cicero opposes superstition to religion in his theological works, but in his secular works, he uses superstition and religion as synonyms. Rezumat. Introduction The paper discusses two seemingly separated topics: the origin and function of the Liar Paradox in ancient Greek philosophy and the Reduction ad absurdum mode of argumentation. Its goal is to show how the two topics fit together and why they are closely connected. The accepted tradition is that Eubulides of Miletos was the first to formulate the Liar Paradox correctly and that the paradox was part of the philosophical discussion of the Megarian School. Which version of the paradox was formulated by Eubulides is unknown, but according to some hints given by Aristotle and an incorrect version given by Cicero1, the version was probably as follows: The paradox is created from the Liar sentence ‘I am lying’. -

AMOS EDELHEIT 1 Summary Cicero wrote in Book Three of On Duties, that the Stoic sage being absolutely good and and perfect was the only one that could be truly happy. For his happiness was based in his virtue and as he had perfect virtue, he had perfect and lasting happiness. Yet the Peripatetics saw that happiness was not a self-sufficient idea and was instead an amalgamation of external goods. Virtue for them was a factor that contributed to happiness, for the Stoics it was essential for happiness. It would appear on inital observation that the life of the Stoic sage was a solitary one, aloof from the rest of humanity. Yet the Stoics maintained that this was the best and happiest form of life, a life lived in accordance with Nature. However, the Peripatetics maintained that nature loves nothing solitary and man is not a solitary animal. In order for him to fullfill his natural end and achieve eudaimonia he would natually be drawn towards the company of others. Cicero highlights the tension between Stoic idealism and Peripatetic pragmatism in his discussion on happiness. When he essentially he askes in Book Five of the Tusculan Disputations. -

Burnyeat taught for fourteen years in the Philosophy Depart- ment of University College London, and then for eighteen years in the Classics Faculty at Cambridge, twelve of them as the Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy, before migrating to Oxford in 1996 to become a Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy at All Souls Col- lege. The studies, articles and reviews collected in these two volumes of Explorations in Ancient and Modern Philosophy were all written, and all but two published, before that decisive change. Whether designed for a scholarly audience or for a wider public, they range from the Presocratics to Augustine, from Descartes and Bishop Berkeley to Wittgenstein and G. E. Moore. Their subject- matter falls under four main headings: ‘Logic and Dialectic’, and ‘Scepticism Ancient and Modern’, which are contained in this first volume; ‘Knowledge’ and ‘Philosophy and the Good Life’ make up the second volume. The title ‘Explorations’ well expresses Burnyeat’s ability to discover new aspects of familiar texts, new ways of solving old problems. In his hands the history of philosophy becomes itself a philosophical activity. m. f. burnyeat is an Honorary Fellow of Robinson College, Cambridge, and an Emeritus Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. He is also a Fellow of the British Academy and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was awarded a CBE for his services to scholarship in 2007. -

CHAPTER ONE Dissoi Logoi: Neosophistic Rhetoric and the Possibility of Critical Pedagogy Some say that the good is one thing and the bad the other, but others say that they are the same, and that a thing might be good for some persons but bad for oth- ers, or at one time good and at another time bad for the same person. —Sprague (279)1 The title of this chapter is taken directly from an anonymous sophistic treatise called Dissoi Logoi, or Dialexeis, and is traced back to the subsequent end of the Peloponnesian War (Sprague 279). I use this treatise as a convenient means to segue into my discussion of the infusion of sophistic rhetorical practices and the- ory into rhetoric and composition. The anonymous author of this treatise articulates the notion of contradiction as an inevitable consequence of discourse, and such notions of inherent contra- dictions have become standard rhetoric, the accepted a priori assumptions of postmodern discourses—an understanding that 1 2 Emancipatory Movements in Composition truth and knowledge are contingent upon circumstance and lan- guage. “Truth,” Richard Rorty writes, “cannot be out there— cannot exist independently of the human mind—because sen- tences cannot so exist or be out there. The world is out there, but descriptions of the world are not”(5). This chapter will explore how the convergence of sophistic rhetoric with contemporary composition theory helps us to envision an alternate discourse model, based on notions of logos, antilogike, mythos, and ethos. Let me begin with a disclaimer about my employment of sophistic rhetoric as a springboard for discussion about cultural studies, feminism, postcolonial studies, and composition: as Edward Schiappa has pointed out, scholars do not know exactly who the sophists were nor what unified their particular rhetoric as specifically “sophistic” (“Sophistic” 5). -

Materials of the World Philosophy Day (Moscow - St. Petersburg, November 16 -19, 2009), p. 177 - 183 (in Russian). Translated into English by the author. This paper was delivered in the Institute of philosophy of the Russian Academy of sciences at the Round Table «Getting rid of stereotypes in the history of philosophy». Some explanatory remarks that have been added in the English translation are placed in square brackets. In 1903 the Weidmann Publishing House in Berlin published the first edition of Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker by the distinguished German classical scholar Hermann Diels which still remains the most complete single edition of the fragments of the Early Greek philosophers (of the VI - V centuries B.C.). In the first edition it started with Thales and ended with «Anhang» that contained pre-philosophical tradition (cosmogonic poetry and prose, the sayings of the Seven Sages) as well as the fragments of the Sophists. After Diels’s death (1922) his disciple Walter Kranz in the last 5th edition (1934) gave it its present structure by dividing the whole text into three parts: A) Anfänge (pre-philosophical tradition), B) Fragments of the Greek Philosophers of the 6th and 5th centuries and their immediate followers and C) Sophists. There are all in all 90 chapters, in which about 400 names are mentioned, of which 235 derive from Jamblichus’ Catalogue of Pythagoreans. Diels himself explained in the preface to the first edition that he included in his collection also some mathematicians and a selection of non-Hippocratic doctors. -

Sondaggi sulla presenza di Pitagora negli scritti ciceroniani: le sezioni frammentarie del De re publica e il De legibus Andrea Balbo DOI – 10.7358/erga-2013-002-balb ABSTraCT – This paper is a part of a research work concerning Pythagoras’ importance in Cicero’s thought and aims to describe some aspects of the role of Pythagoras’ figure in Cicero’s treatises De re publica and De legibus (with exception for Somnium Scipionis). The analysis will deal with the passages where Pythagoras is mentioned or there is an explicit reference to Pythagoric doctrine; a little appendix concerns some little references to Architas, Zaleucus and Carondas: rep. 1, 16; 1, 59; 1, 60; 2, 28; 2, 29; 3, 19; leg. 1, 33; 2, 14; 2, 26. From the examination of the passages it is possible to extract the certainty of the importance of Pythagoric thought in Cicero’s works, even if it is impossible to define exactly the boundaries of this influence, because many Pythagoric elements were a part of the Roman cultural context in this age. A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by John Patrick Frederick Wynne January 2008 CICERO ON THE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION: DE NATURA DEORUM AND DE DIVINATIONE. John Patrick Frederick Wynne, Ph. D. Cornell University, 2008 Cicero wrote de Natura Deorum (dND), de Divinatione (Div.) and de Fato (Fat.) in succession and describes the latter two as continuations of the first. I argue that the three dialogues form a trilogy, in which Cicero as author indicates a stance on the material he presents (but that too little of the fragmentary Fat. remains to be useful for my purposes). There are much-debated attributions of preferences to Cicero’s propriae personae at the conclusions of dND and Div.; I take these preferences to express Cicero’s authorial stance. I examine relevant parts of the speeches to which they react and, first, make philosophical interpretations of each (often comparing other sources for Hellenistic thought) and, second, pay attention to the interaction of Cicero’s characterization of each speaker with the arguments the speaker gives. I find that Balbus in dND advocates the avoidance of superstition and the reform of religious beliefs in line with Stoic physics and that Cotta has a strong commitment to traditional Roman religious views consistent with his sceptical epistemology. Cotta’s scepticism is elusive in its details but perhaps yields a kind of fideism. I find that Quintus Cicero’s advocacy in Div. -

Introduction Cicero has been a fundamental reference point for school education and the system of artes liberales, especially for rhetoric and philosophy, from ancient times to the Renaissance. Although many scholars have written on this subject, even in recent times, much research remains to be done, especially on the diffusion of Cicero’s work and thought dur- ing humanism and the Renaissance1. Nevertheless, it is interesting to consider how Cicero’s influence in university education and literary culture changed during humanism. To address this issue, I intend to fo- cus my attention on the Venetian environment in the second half of the 15th century2. In this context, many important phenomena co-existed: the tumultuous development of the art of printing, the wide diffusion of the study of Greek and Greek authors, and a renewed attention to the natural sciences that was conveyed by Greek works3. In particular, my discussion focuses on Giorgio Valla, a humanist who was trained in the Milanese area but carried out his teaching ac- tivity in Venice for an extended period.
